Fantasticamania 2019 Night 1 - 1/11/2019; NJPW Taking Part in Giant Baba Memorial Show 2/19/2019, Abdullah the Butcher Retires On This Show
Tumblr media
Fantasticamania 2019 has kicked off, one of the favorite tours of the NJPW year around these parts. You can see this opener now on NJPWWorld.
NJPW Presenta CMLL Fantasticamania 2019 - 1/11/2019, Osaka EDION Arena Subarena (NJPWWorld)
Templario, Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] & Gedo [Bullet Club] d. Audaz, Tiger Mask IV & Ryusuke Taguchi (Templario > Audaz, Modified Powerbomb, 7:44)
Forastero, Taichi [SZKG] & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] d. Titan, Flyer & Jushin Thunder Liger (Forastero > Titan, Triangle Choke, 7:32)
Atlantis Jr. Debut Match: Sanson & Shigeo Okumura d. Atlantis & Atlantis Jr. (Okumura > Atlantis Jr., Spinning DDT, 10:16)
Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero & Cuatrero d. Mistico, Dragon Lee & Angel de Oro (Cuatrero > Angel, Cuatrero Bomb, 12:13)
Relevos Increiblas: Caristico, Barbaro Cavernario & Namajague d. Volador Jr., Soberano Jr. & KUSHIDA (Caristico > Volador, La Mistica, 8:37)
Terrible, Tetsuya Naito, BUSHI & Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] d. Satoshi Kojima, Toa Henare, Raijin & Fujin (BUSHI > Fujin, BUSHIRoll, 14:14)
Raijin & Fujin are SHO & YOH, of course, their personas while on excursion in CMLL, however they never really wore the masks, and may have been a signpost for Japanese excursionees not necessarily being masked in a post-NJPWWorld time. Namajague is Kyosuke Mikami is El Desperado. Atlantis Jr. made his CMLL debut today in a losing effort. CMLL has really been pushing this as his actual in-ring debut, however he's really been working Mexican indies for a little while now as Tiburon. CMLL has some pretty high hopes for him. Post-show, Shigeo Okumura talked about current excursionee Hirai Kawato, saying he really had a difficult time in CMLL at first but the last couple of months has turned a corner, and is showing great improvement in the lucha style. Good to hear.

On 2/19/2019, All Japan Pro Wrestling will be holding a special show at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan, commemorating not only the 20th Anniversary of the passing of the company's founder, Shohei "Giant" Baba, but also the retirement ceremony for the one and only, Abdullah the Butcher. New Japan Pro Wrestling will be involved in this show, as will Pro Wrestling NOAH, Wrestle-1 and Big Japan Pro Wrestling. (Interesting with NOAH and W1, both being breakaways from AJPW, but time heals all wounds I guess. Big Japan was founded by former AJPW wrestler Shinya "Great" Kojika, and featured Abdullah heavily in its earlier years.)
So far, only three matches have been announced. However, in the buildup to this show, both current AJPW Triple Crown champion Kento Miyahara, and BJW World Strong Heavyweight champion Daisuke Sekimoto, have expressed desires to face IWGP Heavweight champion Hiroshi Tanahashi at the show. That might be a political nightmare for everyone involved. To be fair, they made their challenges before Tanahashi won the belt off Kenny Omega at WK13. I just can't see NJPW even going with a time limit draw. We'll see when the rest of the show is announced. For now, here are the three matches we know about:
Masanobi Fuchi [AJPW], Yuma Aoyagi [AJPW] & Yoshiaki Fujiwara [FREE] v. Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG]
Jake Lee & Koji Iwamoto [AJPW] v. SANADA & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] v. Ayato Yoshida [K-DOJO] & Shota Umino [NJPW]
Jun Akiyama [AJPW], Takao Omori [AJPW] & Taiyo Kea [FREE] v. Satoshi Kojima [NJPW], Yuji Nagata [NJPW] & Osamu Nishimura [FREE]
More when we know it.
Fantasticamania continues tomorrow.
