There’s a beautiful guitar on a stand in the corner of my living room that calls to me every time I look at it. I don’t pick it up nearly as often as I’d like. I think I’m afraid I will lose too many hours to it. Strange to remember that I used to play every day, that in spite of my complete lack of formal training, I made a very modest living for a time in large part off my music. Granted, my lifestyle then was not financially demanding—a weekly lunch gig at Blue Heaven, a Key West vegetarian joint, went a long way toward supporting a couple of musicians camping in a van by the beach. But I’ve also had the thrill of hearing my song requested on a college radio station while I was driving through town alone in my car. And a little music publication out of Germany once reviewed my (one and only) album as a top ten new artist pick in their international review. Maybe the strange thing is not my musical past, but my musically estranged present. Something to think about... (If you’re curious, the album is available on iTunes, just look up Amy Kalisher. All these years later, I’m probably most proud of the simplest most amateur-sounding song, made by myself in my dad’s garage on a borrowed 4-track cassette recorder.
