#FridayFeature | Wayne Thiebaud - The choice of food as his subject also afforded Thiebaud a degree of artistic autonomy that he found liberating. When he began painting these subjects in the early sixties, he was unaware of other artists working in this vein and so experienced an element of freedom that he had lacked during his Abstract Expressionist experiments. Finally, the food paintings were a vehicle for Thiebaud to re-approach basic formal concerns. He eliminated the busy expressionistic surfaces from his paintings to focus on three rudimentary shapes: the rectangle, the triangle, and the circle or ellipse. He selected subjects that mimicked these shapes: a club sandwich, for example, was seen simply as a series of triangles on a round platter.
