As much as I love flirty, confident Will, nothing hits the same as terrible flirt Mike and completely enamoured Will.

2022 Mike Wheeler 100% has custom icons (you know, the kind where you make a bookmark and add to home screen so you can set a picture instead?) and all of them are little digital doodles of the actual app icons that Will made for him.

He also had a slideshow of happy/goofy selfies of him and Will as his lock screen right up until he and El started dating. Will may or may not have been completely emotionally decimated when Mike's phone lit up on the couch next to him and he didn't see his own face smiling up at him. The selfie slideshow comes back in an updated form when Mike starts dating Will instead. Will has never been happier to see his own face in his life.

Anyway Mike has a widget on his home screen that's just a photo stack of Will's sketches across the years, and he swipes through it whenever he hits a bad mood during the day. He likes Will's newer art because it's objectively better, but Will's earlier pieces still hold a place in The Stack for sheer emotional value. There is at least one Warrior Cats OC from when Mike had his Warrior Cats phase (Will had been more of an Eragon kid himself. Yes, he designed his own dragon. Yes, Mike has a copy of that drawing in The Stack too).

Mike's laptop background is 100% the "you're the heart" painting. He set it immediately after Will airdropped it to him. Will watched him set the painting as his background. Yes, there was a "stretch to fit screen" vs "maintain image ratios" discussion. It was intense. Mike's background has two rectangles of black along either side so that the ratios of the painting don't get skewed (The Discussion went a little like this: "Okay but--Will, hear me out: if I fit to screen I can see it better! It'll be bigger!" vs "But Mike, it won't look right. It'll be squished!" and then they stared at each other for a few seconds before Mike caved and set up the black side chunks).

Mike's computer crashes once and he absolutely has a little freak-out thinking he lost all his saved art. It's after this that he invests in a small external hard drive. Will definitely pokes fun at him (with all the love in the world) about it when he finds out.

100% will byers r u Kidding me. mike is canonically the Will Byers Protector™ and i think he would constantly be picking him up and swinging him around and will sometimes pretends to be annoyed by it but he always gives in and ends up giggling into mikes neck like an idiot

ooh ok so i hc byler as a very (badly) flirty couple but in v different ways if that makes sense? i think they would both do this, but mike would do it jokingly to try to fluster will (it doesn't work) and will would look him dead in the eye and say something twice as sappy with a completely straight face and mike would fuckign melt

8 - in a coffee shop au, who'd be the worker and who would be the customer?

i love this one either way tbh!! mike is the obvious cringefail loser incompetent barista but they r cringe4cringe and will is equally capable of behaving like an absolute lunatic where a pretty customer is involved (see: thea wiseatom's you are sick (and you're married))

12 - when did they first fall in love with each other?

mmm ok there are lots and lots of different ways to interpret this and i don't particularly have an exact moment for when they actively fell in love w each other (i think it was too gradual and natural to have a specific starting point) but i would say will was the first to figure it out, probably prior to s1, while mike figured it out at the end of s3.

(i will add tho,, i do think there's smth to be said for the concept that mike actually knew his feelings for will when he was younger and made an active choice to ignore them and/or genuinely thought he liked el and convinced himself the will thing was a fluke. not usually the interpretation i go with for fics etc but maybe worth exploring??)

13 - who likes to give the other hugs from behind, followed by a kiss?

this is another either/or type of situation, but i do think once will knows he's Allowed he'd be the clingiest bf ever and do things like this all the time. However in re my previous statement abt mike being the Will Byers Protector™ i think mike would also need to constantly be hugging/clinging to will in some way bc That's His Job!! (it's maybe for his own reassurance too but. no one else needs to know that >:-()

Will never not confuse me how certain shippers will fight about how antis who say that Byler happening would be unrealistic because it’s the 80s are wrong, because ST is a show with alternate dimensions and monsters, but then do a 180 and say that Mike wielding a sword would be unrealistic because he’s just an incompetent pool noodle whose sole purpose is to be the damsel in distress/love interest despite the show depicting as being the first to always fight back

Like??? I know its just a joke and they’re not being malicious, but people making Mike out to be a literal idiot (and i don’t mean in the joking sense) annoys me sometimes. Especially when its clearly done to make Will look better despite both of them being Idiots In Love and absolute losers who are cool in their own right #Cringe4Cringe

Sorry for this late reply but I of course agree! It’s so frustrating especially because it all started out as a joke and now you can’t even really tell who says it as a joke and who genuinely thinks Mike is some soggy pool noodle. It’s the same with the Hopper being mikephobic and Jonathan wanting to explode Mike with his mind jokes. They were funny when you could tell that they were meant as silly jokes but there are actually people who think that Hopper and Jonathan genuinely don’t like Mike 💀

And the damsel in distress thing is honestly infuriating! Mike is canonically a leader, thinker, plan creator, fighter and protecter! And he’s good at all of this! Mike is strong, intelligent and capable and I just hate it when people undermine him!
