SoC Comic Adaptation and General FAQ
General
Who are you?
Hi, I'm Claire (she/they)! I'm currently studying to become a professional comic creator. I love drawing fashion, expressive characters, and anti-hero action.
Where else can I find your work?
You can find all my work on my website! I'm also on Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and Tiktok (sometimes...). You can find my fan art under the handle jccatstudios, and my original art under jcscottart (only on Instagram and Twitter).
How can I support your work?
Besides supporting my work through your lovely comments and reblogs, you can help monetarily support me on Ko-Fi. Your support helps fund my college education.
Six of Crows: A Comic Adaptation
Why are you doing this?
Ever since I read the duology, I always thought it would make a great graphic novel series. When my professor encouraged me to start a webcomic, I took the opportunity to make the comic I imagined into reality. I want to see the whole series illustrated through comics one day. If I got the chance to make the official adaptation, that would be one of my biggest dream projects. I'm also using this project as an opportunity to improve my skills before I graduate.
Will you post it on (insert webcomic platform)?
Probably not. Most online comic platforms are meant for scroll format, and I'm making a traditional format comic. Plus, I post on so many sites already, so I think adding another would take too much time out of actually creating the comic.
Will you draw the whole book/series?
I wish I could! Since I'm not doing this full-time or professionally, that's quite unlikely. It would take years to complete it full-time, who knows how long as a hobby. I'd love to add a six-volume SoC graphic novel series to my shelf, but that of course can't be done without some serious backing. I'm currently working on adapting Chapter 3.
Where's Chapter 1: Joost?
I never drew it! I started with Chapter 2: Inej because I wanted to draw the main characters first. The first chapter of the comic is the second chapter of the book. I name the comic chapters after the book chapters just to make it clear which part of the book they correspond to.
Can I repost your art, use your art for layouts/edits, etc?
Yes, you may with visible credit. If you use it for your profile layout, put my handle in your bio. If you're reposting it or using my art for edits/collages, put my handle in the description. As long as it's for personal use, you can use my art. Do not sell copies of my art, use it in merch, or use it for any sort of monetary gain. Do not use my art for prompting or generating images.
Can I use your character designs and headcanons in fanart, fanfic, etc?
Absolutely! Please tag me if you do. I don't need credit since I didn't create any of these characters, but I definitely want to see what you create. :D
How do you make the comic?
The comic is made with mostly traditional methods with some digital editing. I pencil and ink all of the pages on bristol board. I mainly use the G-pen nib for characters and technical pens for the backgrounds. Once I scan the pages, I do light adjustments to the line art and correct any mistakes. The gray tones come from a single sheet of ink wash adjusted to be lighter or darker. The bubbles and lettering are all digital.
If anything else comes up, I'll add it here! Feel free to send me an ask if you have a question that isn't on this post.

I don’t approve of threats but why was an act like this aimed for families that included kids as young as five included in this festival in the first place?
Tumblr media
Sex education theatre show for children cancelled after ‘violent threats’
by Lanre Baraka
The Family Sex Show organisers receive abuse over UK production aimed at children as young as five
A theatre show that promised to reimagine sex education by discussing the issue in a frank and open manner with audience members as young as five years old has been cancelled after “violent threats” were made against its organisers.
The Family Sex Show was due to tour this spring but was pulled from venues after what its creators called a series of “violent and illegal threats and abuse” were directed at the company and venues by “a small group of people with extremist views”.
The show had been in development by Josie Dale-Jones since 2017 and promised to confront subjects including boundaries, gender, relationships and masturbation in a production aimed at families that included some nudity.
After the show was announced and news of its content began circulating online, a petition was started, which claimed the production was “wholly inappropriate and is a blatant attempt to sexualise children and break down their natural boundaries”.
ThisEgg, the company behind the production, said in a statement that audiences were given information about the content before booking, so could make an “informed decision” about the show.
An online comment piece for The Critic magazine claimed The Family Sex Show could lead to inappropriate conversations between children and adults about sex and “is creating a gap, nay, a canyon, for predators to enter”.
The Guardian understands threatening and abusive calls and communications were sent to the venues hosting the show and ThisEgg, which led on 14 April to the cancellation of the performances.
The show had been due to visit the Tobacco Factory in Bristol and the Norfolk & Norwich festival in May, but just an invitation-only date in Bath remains, “ahead of subsequent public performances in the future”.
Made in collaboration with the School of Sexuality Education, the production would have offered free family workshops before the performances, which included sex educators available to answer questions. There was also a spin-off podcast.
The company added it would have offered “safe and positive learning to children, young people and guardians about rights, bodies, sex and relationships, advised by safeguarding and educational specialists”.
Its statement said: “We believe that what has happened is reflective of structural and societal attitudes towards relationships and sex education as well as art, culture and who is allowed to create and what we are allowed to engage with in the UK.”
In an interview with the Guardian in early March, Dale-Jones discussed the possibility of a backlash. “We know we will get people who don’t want it to happen,” she said. “There aren’t many of them, but they shout loudly. The main thing is looking after the company, the venues, their staff and the audiences.”
ThisEgg said its creative team would continue to work on the showso it was “ready for a time it might be able to meet a public”. It also apologised to those who had bought tickets and said it wanted to respond to “the events of the last few weeks”. “Removing work that celebrates freedom of expression from stages cannot be the answer,” it added.
This footnote was added on 20 April 2022. Outspoken Sex Ed, mentioned in an earlier version of this article as a project collaborator, says rather that its role involved discussions with ThisEgg during the research stage.

Tools of choice: When I started working professionally in the late 1980s, I would often switch up my materials according to the assignment. I love to play with different art styles and different forms of comics. So I might use pastels, colored pencils, watercolors, or gouache for my illustration work. Or I would try out different ink nibs, pens, or brushes for my comics.  When I began doing freelance work at the animation studio Augenblick around 2009, I started using a Wacom Cintiq and pen to draw digitally. I recognized it would greatly increase my productivity, especially when making comics. So I began to lay out my comics in Photoshop, doing the equivalent of “pencil" drawings, then I’d print those out in pale blue ink on bristol board, and ink with traditional brushes. Over the years, I have transitioned to working almost exclusively on the Cintiq. It’s a great tool, as I can layout text in Indesign (using fonts I design) and do all the drawing in Photoshop (using the many great brushes available).  And I can use my other screens to display my visual reference.
Tumblr media
All my New Yorker covers from the 1990’s were drawn on paper or vellum using traditional media (such as watercolor or pastels), while my most recent cover from 2019 was drawn entirely digitally.
Tumblr media
Sometimes I make notes or sketches for my comics on my iPad, and for that I just use the Apple Pencil.
Tumblr media
But not quite everything is digital! I often go to lectures by artists, and I make sketches from their slideshows. For that, I generally use a Pigma Graphic 1 pen on printer paper, as it’s easy to scan or photograph to share online.
Tumblr media
Tool I wish I could use better: It would be great to get back to painting. I sometimes do large, live paintings for performance events (using tempera), but those are pretty quick, gestural pieces. If I had the space or time I’d enjoy playing more with that form.
Tumblr media
Tool I wish existed: The only tool I can think of is a time machine!  I’d love more hours to experiment.
Tricks: Because I draw in so many comics styles, I love to create fonts to match. I like using sites such as Calligraphr or Your Fonts, where you can generate a reasonable looking font very inexpensively.
Misc: For many years, I’ve been hosting a live show called Carousel, featuring readings and performances by cartoonists and visual artists. I present the shows at clubs, galleries, and festivals in NY and beyond. It’s been a great way to introduce audiences to new work, and stay involved in the community.
Here’s the website.

Research into Immersive Experiences
Blog Post #2
Angelique Shelley (MA Concept Art)
Wake the Tiger
Wake The Tiger is a 4D immersive experience that consists of a self-guided tour through narratively driven rooms (see fig. 1).
Tumblr media
Fig. 1 A Photograph of a Wake The Tiger set, Visit Bristol, n/d
The participants can enjoy the experience at their own pace while deciphering the story behind the incredible, immersive, physical sets with animated light shows (Wake The Tiger, 2024). This type of immersive experience isn’t new, but what I think makes this one special is the level of self-exploration and engagement required to decipher the story; it makes you an active participant which has its own power. I believe this was an intentional decision on the producers’ part who designed “an indescribable space offering a soul-searching and mind-bending personal voyage...a transformative experience for those who truly connect.” (Wake The Tiger, 2024). The theme of the installation is a look into an alternate world challenged by a climate crisis, this level of immersion creates in us a chance to look at our own climate impact and hopefully do what we can to advocate for the health of the earth. In other words, it’s an experience designed to influence positive change through the power of immersion and imagination.
Hogwarts Express Shuttle, Universal Orlando Resort
Amusement parks create a plethora of immersive experiences, but one that is very memorable for me is the Hogwarts Express shuttle between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. They could have made this into an ordinary shuttle experience that focused solely on speed and capacity, but the designers decided to create an experience that added to the magic of the world and of the Hogwarts Express, enhancing it into a 4D cinematic ride in its own right.
Tumblr media
Fig.1 A Photograph of a carriage interior on the Hogwarts Express ride at Universal Orlando Resort, 2023
The ride carriages are small, intimate, relatable spaces with curved screens giving an impression of the outside (see fig. 1), there is also a screen or projector on the inside carriage door where silhouettes of characters and dementors walk past your carriage.
Experiencing this technology from the inside after seeing the outside of a moveable, functional train (see fig. 2), adds to the immersion and illusion of screen vs. reality. It makes for a fun experience that you can enjoy while touching knees with strangers, a relatable and realistic tube encounter.
Tumblr media
Fig.2 A Photograph of the Hogwarts Express ride at Universal Orlando Resort, 2023
While there’s controversy surrounding the Harry Potter franchise at the moment, I believe it’s important to celebrate creative contributions from amazing artists.

Last few days to donate to support Saffron, a UK charity helping women get into music technology.
"Less than 5% of the music tech industry is comprised of women, non-binary or trans people. Less than 1% of these are Black, Asian or ethnically diverse. We're working hard to provide these people with a seat at the table and opportunities within the music industry.
As a non-profit organisation, Saffron's mission has been to advance gender equality in the music tech sector by creating safer spaces for marginalised people to learn, create and grow confidently through forward-thinking technological music creation, DJ and music industry experience.
Saffron and its sister organisation Mix Nights have been doing this work consistently for seven years in Bristol, London, Nottingham, Birmingham and globally online. Recently, however, we have found ourselves in a precarious position and urgently need your help to continue.
THE POSITION WE FIND OURSELVES IN
As a mixed Black Caribbean-led organisation we were eligible for a number of grants sparked by the Black Lives Matter 2020 movement. This allowed us to thrive in the short term, but these funds were largely one-off gestures rather than essential ongoing core support.
Over the past few months, a number of crucial and expected arts grants and income sources for our work in 2023 have not materialised or been cut, and our primary industry donor has departed.
This has left us in a tight spot. We are now turning to our community to help get us through the next few months whilst we carry out our longer-term plans to make Saffron more sustainable. With 7 years of work behind us, we are now asking for YOUR support.
WHY SAFFRON'S WORK IS IMPORTANT
As recently highlighted by Emily Eavis following criticism of Glastonbury's all-white-male lineup, there is an industry "pipeline problem". A problem Saffron has actively been working to address from all angles.
In 2022 we provided music tech training and community infrastructure for over 1000 people around the world. This included widening accessibility:
- 40% access courses, mentoring and memberships for free or discounted
- 46% are global majority (Black, Asian, mixed ethnicities)
- 37% have additional support needs, eg. Autism, physical or mental health issues
And generating real impact:
- 41% of Mix Nights course graduates have gone on to paid gig bookings
- 34% of radio course graduates have secured their own residency
There is a vital need for our work. To put this in perspective: in 2022, we had 644 course applications for 200 places.
WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL DO
Your support will help cover our core costs, allowing us to continue our existing programmes, strengthen community connections and build stable foundations to move forward with confidence.
- Provide music tech training and community opportunities to 1000+ women, trans and non- binary people.
- Employ 7 people on salary, 3 on retainer, and 20 regular freelancers across 4 cities and 2 continents.
- Continue workshops/courses/showcase events in Nottingham, London, Bristol, Birmingham and 1 new city, plus online.
- Commission and release new records, and support career development opportunities for diverse artists
- Marketing and outreach campaigns highlighting diversity in music tech to young people.
- Progress course and member activity participants to a higher level with new industry partners, mentoring and opportunities.
- Consult with communities to bring diverse folks into their first experiences with music tech in a meaningful way."
They are very close to meeting their goal!

WRITING AND RESEARCH
Good evening, Everyone,
My name is Essence Burroughs. I am 23 years old. I love taking online courses. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in early childcare. I am even more excited to give this art class a try. I used to love painting, especially when it was time to gather as a family and go painting with a twist. A fun fact you should know about me is that I am short but love to walk in heels to make me look taller.
Five facts about Damien Hirst
Damien Hirst was born in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. He then moved to London in 1986 to study at Goldsmith’s College.
Hirst became famous for a group of artworks, such as, a shark, sheep, and a cow, that were chopped up animals in formaldehyde and rotting meat.
The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Somone Living, artwork of the tiger shark which is considered iconic work of British art from the 1990s and has become a symbol of Britart worldwide.
The tiger shark was caught off Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia, by a fisher who was asked to do so.
Hirst won Tate Britain’s Turner Prize, an award for contemporary art in 1995.
Hirst is supposed to be the richest living artist to date.

The way I think about art has changed since the first time I looked at this image. I notice that art does have a way of bringing things to life. My first thought about the image was scary because I know sharks can be dangerous. It also started making me feel like I was in the ocean with a live shark in deep water. Then I felt like I was at an aquarium where SeaLife is on display so that humans can learn how sharks communicate, what they eat, how they are trained, etc. The image made me feel so curious about how they created the illusion. Yes, I do see things differently in art after looking at this image. Most of all I see that art can be interpreted in many ways, and that everyone's interpretation is valid.
2. ART AND WRITING
Tumblr media
The Last Supper is graphic artwork by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. The painting was made between the late 1490s for the Dominican monastery Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan. The painting stands for the last “dinner” between Jesus and his disciples. Leonardo used tempera paint and mixed media directly to the stone wall. The use the painting serve is to let us remember the life and work of Jesus did for us, as he blessed bread and broke it, and the physical blood shed by him. The Last Supper painting is important to me because he sacrificed his last meal while getting ready to prepare a better place for us. Yes, the picture is stunning because it looks realistic as if I can touch the lord. I love that every day I see the picture hanging on my wall, I feel the lord's presence near me.
3. WRITING A SELF-POTRAIT
The “baggage” I will bring along when I look at art is positivity to the work of artists by keeping an open mind and appreciating their creativity and message it means behind it. The 23-year-old me has learned how to stay positive and supportive whether I created something or even if it someone else works. I am an African American female who is from Arcadia FL. If you know me well, you will know I love to try new foods and travel to different states and countries. I am so excited to travel to Jamaica Montego Bay area for my 24th birthday in August. I am currently not in an organized group, but when I was younger, around about 16 years old, I used to be in a group called the precious pearls youth. In the Precious Pearls group, we travel to Washington D.C, Tennessee, Orlando, etc. We were taught how to meet new people and still have self-respect to others, family, and friends. I was working at a childcare center for 2 years, which I loved dearly. I decided to give home health aide a try for a couple of years. What makes you uniquely you? When I get this question asked to me the first thing, I think about is my patience. My patience speaks a lot of value, especially when I was in childcare and had to learn it each day on how to tolerate a person being upset or mad. It worked out for the better more when I decided to give working round elderly people a try.

Online Art Gallery Exhibitions In Bristol
There is no denying that art has been an integral part of human existence to express the bundles of emotions and feelings. The art galleries are home to some of the stunning artwork we humans have created so far. Some art work speaks about the rich history and heritage of human culture and some talk about the future. You get to observe the untold stories of mankind and traverse in the fantasy world just by observing an artwork closely. That is why, art galleries play a crucial role in preserving and displaying such rare artworks.
Tumblr media
The real purpose of Bristol art gallery exhibitions are that these spaces foster the spirit and culture of the artistic community while also encouraging them and addressing various societal issues. Artwork is valued only when it is presented in front of the interested audience. An art gallery is a platform of communication between the artists and the general public. That said, our Bristol art gallery exhibitions will continue to be a vital part to the society as they hold the power to showcase the entire world and the worldliness in a nutshell with great depth.
These art galleries have been playing their major role in reflecting and shaping our society. While visiting an art gallery is very subjective decision and experience, the scale of inclination will also differ and depends on how and what the artwork will provoke in them.
If you love visiting Bristol art gallery exhibitions, you can reach out to us.

Artist Interview - Alicia Levantini - Strathmore Artist Papers
Tumblr media
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Alicia Levantini, and I’m a self-taught pen & ink illustrator living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  I do custom house and building drawings as well as create stationery and prints of my work.
Why do you do what you do?
I’ve always been a lover of Philadelphia’s charming row homes and of walking around the city admiring them. Over quarantine, I started to draw Philadelphia stoops in my neighborhood, and as soon as I posted them online, I had a long waitlist for me to draw other people’s stoops and houses! What started out as a quarantine hobby has turned into my full-time job. I feel so lucky to do what I do!
You use so many vibrant colors, do you have any that you favor?
I absolutely love when I’m able to create a blooming window flower box or garden landscape in my custom house drawings! I love when there are splashes of pinks, purples, and reds in the illustrations. I also swoon over a colorful front door - I think blue is my favorite to draw!
What inspires your art?
My love of charming architecture, and creating realistic-looking, to-scale, drawings - all while incorporating bright colors and fine lines.
How and when did you get into art?
I’ve been a creator since I was old enough to hold a paintbrush. My parents say that on my first day of preschool, I walked through the door and right up to the easels! I haven’t stopped creating since.
How has your practice changed over time?
I’ve really fine-tuned the art supplies that I use. I have found my favorite brush pens, fine liners, and erasers, and I don’t stray from them! I’ve been using Strathmore paper from the start, though!
What’s your favorite piece of art that you’ve created? Why?
This is such a tough question because I feel so connected to all of my drawings! I think my favorite has to be this West Philadelphia Victorian house. It really pushed my boundaries of what I thought I was capable of doing, and it ended up better than I could have hoped for.
What’s the best piece of art advice you’ve been given?
To scan every drawing I do, in both the outline and full-color versions!
What’s one art tip/technique you can share with us that you find really helpful?
Do everything in pencil first!! I draw my entire house drawings completely in pencil first and then go in with my micron pens and brush pens. This allows me to minimize mistakes, and to make sure everything is looking good before it gets finalized.
Do you have any secret tips or techniques you use to salvage a piece when you make a mistake?
I have a couple of tricks I always use: I use white plastic erasers to erase the toughest dark pencil marks that are hard to get rid of, and I always keep a white gel pen nearby to “erase” any stray brush pen marks from a lighter area of my drawing.
What is your favorite Strathmore paper? Why?
Hands down, the Strathmore Bristol paper pads. The paper is so smooth and my brush pens glide right on. It also is forgiving for heavy-handed pencil users like me!
What types of colors are you drawn to for your art and why?
I love any bright colors that are naturally found in nature and make my drawings pop. Pinks, purples, and reds for flowers, blue or green front doors, and a beautiful brick red color for houses.
Who are your biggest influences?
My work is very different from his, but I’ve always been a lover of Claude Monet. His landscapes transport me to another world and bring me a feeling of tranquility. I especially love his waterscapes and garden paintings.
What’s the most common art-related question you get from your followers?
Do you work off of photos, or do you sit in front of the building you’re drawing? I work off of photos! Each piece takes me many, many hours. I sit at home, with my cat on my lap, and work off of photos as my references. This also allows me to draw houses and buildings in any part of the world, not just in Philadelphia.
