Tatiana Nikolaevna was to my mind prettier than her sisters. She was taller even than the Empress, but she was so slight and well-proportioned that her great height was not remarkable. She had fine, regular features, recalling pictures of ancestresses who had been famous beauties. She had dark hair, a rather pale complexion, and wide-apart, light-brown eyes, that gave her a poetic far-away look, not quite in keeping -with her character. This was a mixture of exactness, thoroughness and perseverance, with leanings towards poetic and abstract ideas. She was closest in sympathy to her mother, and was the definite favorite of both her parents. She was completely unselfish, always ready to give up her own plans to go for a walk with her father, to read to her mother, to do anything that was wanted.

Drawing of the visit of the Russian Imperial couple to Austria. Alexandra Feodorovna walking at the arm of Emperor Franz Joseph. Behind them, Nicholas II and Archduchess Stephanie (Former Crown Princess, widow of Crown Prince Rudolf). Empress Elisabeth, who was surprisingly present at the dinner table, must have retired earlier to her chambers, as she often did. Thus, her place at the arm of Emperor Nicholas was taken by her daughter-in-law. According to Countess Sophie Buxhoeveden's diary, "The Empress Elizabeth of Austria, who had quite retired from Court after the tragic death of her son, the Crown Prince Rudolph, came especially to Vienna to welcome the young Empress and was exceedingly kind to her. This was the only time they ever met. Both the Emperor and the Empress fell immediately under the spell of the Empress Elizabeth's romantic personality and never forgot the picture of loveliness she made at the State dinner at the Hofburg palace.

Diary entry of Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov of Russia
"During the day I bathed. The water was 18°C. I threw Olga fully clothed into the lake from the gang plank. We said goodbye to people who are not coming with us. We showed Isa, Nastinka ,Trina , papa's room. We have not slept all night and watched how the fusiliers loaded the baggage. We drank some tea with mama at midnight."
