INFINITE CITY
Infinite City interrogates a new rendition of hyperdense urbanism where the city is no longer organised horizontally across the ground plane and divided by transport networks but in a 3 dimensional grid with multilateral, multidirectional transportation networks.
The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs has estimated that by 2050 more than two-thirds of the world population will live in cities. One century after Harvey Wiley Corbett’s vision of highrise city blocks with multi-level transport.
Infinite City interrogates a new rendition of hyperdense urbanism where the city is no longer organised horizontally across the ground plane and divided by transport networks but in a 3 dimensional grid with multilateral, multidirectional transportation networks.
Tumblr media
A grid is applied to urban settings which will produce a benefits in terms of land-use efficiency, connectivity and walkability, and transport.
Tumblr media
In addition, Infinite City will require new legislative laws that replace the purchasing of land with the purchasing of airspace. Commercial, residential and institutional buildings of all scales will occupy a 3 dimensional infrastructure in a stacked urban distribution.
The road, skytrain and skywalk is using a grid pattern as a setting. The ‘squares’ of the grid are the main roads and the smaller roads can be like in between the squares.
Tumblr media
Each transport has a different destination. For example some skyrail is located in the inner city and some is located in the outer city. And the road system will sit below a skytrain rail so it will not block a sky space.
Tumblr media
vimeo
Infinite cities also invent a multilevel  transport. In this case, The sky walk, which connects the various buildings. Instead of alienating people from the built environment, the  infinite city have made the accessible to various building and society connection more easier.
The buildings are having different  facades. Just like our cities today, these different typologies of building will each have their own expressions and articulations that identify their function and internal program and also these represent in the infinite city as vertical way.
Tumblr media
Connectivity is another key  for infinite city. The buildings will merge together by escalators and elevators that mean people from one building can go to another building by just using elevators or escalators.
Tumblr media
There will not be one skyscraper with multifunction but it will be a building that stack up together which make it one multifunction city. In addition, The mixed-use proposal includes a combination of residential, office with public parkland that connects the with the urban.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, infinite city also invent the artificial screen as environmental. The urban environment’s interiors and exteriors will house a series of artificial environments in the form of screens and internal climate systems.
Tumblr media
This artificial screen exists in the building that can not reach the light outside. This artificial screen exist in  the building that can not reach the light outside will have an artificial screen as an exterior screen which appears interior. And these digital artificial screen will change over time due to season

An Artist’s Leafy, Bohemian Sanctuary In Alphington
An Artist’s Leafy, Bohemian Sanctuary In Alphington

‘I have developed the garden over forty years to create an intimate and serene space in which to equally entertain, relax in and be inspired by’, tells Suzanne. Photo – Caitlin Mills for The Design Files. Styling – Annie Portelli.
Many years ago Suzanne created a Colour Creation booklet created for Dulux, demonstrating decorative techniques achieved with paints. The Edgbastion property was built in the 1880s by Thomas Stokes as a stately family home. At the time, the Alphington house was surrounded by farmland, but as the city and suburbs crept out, the property caught the eye of a group of bohemian friends. Closely located to the artists of the Heidelberg school, it was converted into three apartments and was a hub for parties, art, and late night dancing.
Suzanne moved into her apartment in 1980, and shares the home with her cat Algernon. The architectural integrity of the home has always been paramount to Suzanne, and the residents have twice ‘saved the house from the wrecking ball’ and ‘inappropriate development.’ Drawn to the character and Victorian dimensions of high ceilings and long windows, Suzanne has only made small cosmetic changes to her home.
Using her artistic skills, Suzanne has added a fresh lick of paint, a stone and shell grotto (!), new fireplace and floor stencils on the pine floorboards. She has also spent the last forty years tending to the garden ‘to create an intimate and serene space in which to equally entertain, relax in and be inspired by.’
The home is filled with Suzanne’s favourite objects, which sit perfectly in this richly layered home, characterised by 3.5 metre ceilings and long sash windows. Special pieces include the painting by Max Sherlock (of the river and bush in Heidelberg), Suzanne’s triangular carved wood chair, and ‘bar’ cabinet that ‘has a particular warmth, and gracefully anchors the space in which it sits.’
What initially drew Suzanne to the home was the quiet seclusion, access to the Yarra and parklands, while still being close to the city. Between the generous bay windows, open fireplace, backyard studio, and ‘simple and purposeful set of rooms’ this heritage apartment is sure to find another passionate custodian soon!
Check out the listing for Suzanne’s fabulous apartment here!

National Lottery support for historic castle and gardens
A grant of almost £5m from the National Lottery is set to open up Hillsborough Castle and its historic gardens.
The £4.8m award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) will transform the visitor experience at the site, ready to welcome an expected 200,000 people each year by 2019.
Hillsborough Castle is part of a 100 acre estate made up of historic buildings, gardens and parklands in County Down. The major new project, led by independent charity Historic Royal Palaces (HRP), will conserve and interpret the site’s unique heritage, increase accessibility with the installation of new visitor facilities and provide a range of opportunities for learning and skills development.
Anna Carragher, UK trustee and chair of HLF in Northern Ireland, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players the important natural, cultural and built heritage of Hillsborough Castle will be conserved and opened up for many more people to enjoy.
“This unique heritage attraction will become a must-see attraction, allowing visitors to learn more about its fascinating history, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the beautiful gardens or tour the historic State Rooms.”
Outside works will be carried out to conserve the historic features of the Walled Garden, including its original quadrant layout and central pool, and enhance its original planting. The Lost Garden, which had become overgrown and difficult to access, will be reinstated and new paths, bridges and trails installed to allow visitors to fully explore the extensive grounds. New visitor facilities including ticketing and a retail space will be created, and the Stable Yard used to house a dedicated learning centre for families, schools and youth and community groups.
Inside the Castle visitors will be able to tour the State Rooms, including the newly conserved and re-presented Throne Room, Drawing Room and Staircase Hall – learning more about their use as a venue for royal visits, political discussions and entertaining. The tour will also give visitors an insight into life for those living and working in the ‘back-of-house’ areas.
An ambitious volunteer programme will provide opportunities for learning and development, with the gardens becoming a hub for horticulture and heritage skills. Training will also be provided for a number of roles including visitor information, tour-guiding, conservation and events.
Patricia Corbett, head of Hillsborough Castle, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the HLF has chosen to support our exciting plans for Hillsborough Castle. This major project will enable us to open up this fascinating and beautiful historic site to the widest possible audience. Work to create the new facilities is already well underway and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors to Hillsborough Castle in years to come.”

New Lady Cilento Children's Hospital / Lyons + Conrad Gargett
Architects: Lyons, Conrad Gargett Location: South Bank 3, Clem Jones Promenade, Brisbane QLD 4101, Australia Area: 115000.0 sqm Project: Year 2014 Photographs: Dianna Snape
From the architect. Melbourne architectural and urban design practice Lyons in association with Brisbane architects Conrad Gargett have completed the new Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. The hospital is a specialist paediatric teaching hospital providing tertiary and quaternary health services to patients across Queensland. The twelve level 95,000m2 hospital is a significant new urban addition to Brisbane’s Southbank precinct.
It’s brightly coloured exterior, incorporating the green and purple coloration of the native Bougainvillea plantings in the adjacent parklands, speaks of a building designed for children. In its form and massing, it challenges the conventional model of podium and tower and delivers a medium rise, sculpted building with landscaped roofscapes.
The building is also highly functional and incorporates some of the world’s most advanced diagnostic, interventional and treatment facilities.
"Design work began with research into the genealogy and typology of the contemporary hospital. We studied hospitals from the 1980s though to the present day and saw these as being largely functionally driven and medico-centric in their planning", says Corbett Lyon of Lyons, Design Director on the LCCH project.
"The Queensland project was an opportunity to contest these prevailing paradigms; to radically rethink both the care model and the way in which the building might contribute to the city as a civic marker and as a touchstone for the Brisbane community".
The design uses a 'salutogenic' approach, incorporating design strategies which research has shown to directly support patient health and wellbeing; attributes such as clear wayfinding, connections to the outside, views of nature and providing a green and sustainable environment for patients and staff.
The design concept is based on the idea of a 'living tree'. 'This parti was developed in the early planning stages through a series of workshops with the hospital's users and stakeholders', say Lyons.
A network of double height spaces (branches) radiate from two vertical atria (trunks) in the centre of the plan. The branch spaces extend beyond the street lines to form a series of framing portals and external balconies where users can view the city. Each branch is oriented toward a key landmark in the surrounding city – to the high rise buildings of central Brisbane, to the adjacent parklands, to the distant mountains and to the Brisbane River. The branch spaces also serve to connect inside and outside and bring natural daylight into the building.
The vertical and horizontal spaces in the tree form comprise the principal public circulation system in the hospital. They create a mind map for the building and the framed external landmarks are used as a means of orientation within the building.
Two and three dimensional art is used extensively throughout the building to promote patient wellbeing and provide engaging distractions for young patients. A group of brightly coloured parrots inhabit the central atrium space and images of butterflies, beetles and insects are printed onto the timber panels which line the hospital’s public spaces.
The colours used on the outside and inside of the building are derived from the colours of the Queensland landscape. These include muted neutral colour tones found in the Queensland outback landscape together with the more vibrant colours of the State's exotic birds, rainforest butterflies and flora.
Access to green space is a key element of the design. Rooftop gardens, green walls, enclosed courtyard gardens and views to surrounding parklands all form part of the hospital's healing environment. The green roofs on the upper levels are used by patients, families and staff for passive and active recreation and are also used as part of the hospital's rehabilitation programs.
