This is approximate since calculations vary, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% of carbon emissions since the Industrial Revolution have come from destruction of terrestrial ecosystems—wetland destruction, deforestation, degradation of grasslands and so on
Soil, soil communities, root systems, carbonate rock, wood, living plants, and peat in wetlands—all holds carbon
Now consider what plants do for you
The mere sight of plants and trees improves mental and physical health. I won't elaborate much more upon this, the positive effects are incredible and overwhelming.
Trees and vines that shade your home and outdoor areas: reduce the cost of cooling, meaning less electricity is used. Shade reduces the risk of death in extreme heat events.
(Trees also reduce light and noise pollution)
Edible plants (many wild plants and many plants you can grow): provide you with food reducing your dependence on industrial agriculture and cars to reach supermarkets
Community gardens and orchards: creates resilience and interdependence among small local communities, reducing the power of capitalism and increasing the ability of individuals to organize and create change. Makes more sustainable and plant based diets accessible to people for whom they would ordinarily be inaccessible
Compost piles for gardening: less greenhouse gas emissions than result from waste breaking down anaerobically in landfills
No more traditional lawns: much less use of gas powered lawn mowers, weed whackers etc. which are, by themselves, significant contributions to carbon emissions and urban pollution
Crafting and creating using plants: Locally available wild plant species can be used by local crafters and creators for baskets and containers, yarn, fabrics, dyes, and the like, resulting in less dependence on unsustainable and unethical global industries
More people growing and gathering edible and useful plants and using them = larger body of practical, scientific and technological insights to draw from in order to solve future problems
not really fond of the cut off point for this one, but i wanted to get progress update 9 out in time for anniversary day! i'm STILL thinking abt this project and i really want to try and see it through!! community gardens i haven't forgotten about you....
Before you run those dandelions over with the lawn mower or douse them with weed killer, check this video out. Dandelions have various benefits, edible leaves rich in vitamins, diuretic properties, potential antioxidant effects, and use in herbal medicine. via @bodylovebytal

i'm SORRY for lineup posting w/ them again ok.... i'm thinking abt the comm gardens animatic again and the old ref is not how i think abt/draw them anymore so i had to FIX. old one under the cut for a fun comparison whee
i’m relistening to burn pygmalion and i particularly noticed the line “there’s no more community gardens so i guess i have to settle for you”
and i want to dig into that, so let’s dig into that
in these lyrics it’s detailed the pov character has noticed that when people’s hearts have been planted in community gardens they are less likely to be in despair. community gardens are a group project where everyone willing plants seeds into one big garden and it all grows together. if i’d analyze this symbolically i’d interpret it as a community, specifically your own. in simpler terms, a friend group, the relationships that you have. if you plant your heart together with them everyone helps manage it, everyone grows around everyone and everyone helps each other grow. when people have other people around them they’re usually less sad. that’s logical.
that’s why this line really interests me, because how would this be interpreted in that case?
both of the times this community garden theme is brought up it’s also brought up in relation to [the pov characters] years there (presumably meaning in life). in the first mention it’s an observation, in the second mention it’s an admission. if we are going with the community gardens being a personal community then i’d assume the pov character is talking about their own loneliness. because it’s very explicitly mentioned that they themselves don’t seem to do it themselves, it’s just an observation.
at the end they finally admit to the truth, they’re tired of this, the years they spent alone have put them in despair. there are no more community gardens, there are no more communities for them to be in, so they have to settle for [the person they’re speaking to]. they have nowhere else to turn to.
i know burn pygmalion is a concept album with its own story but i felt like analyzing these part of the song in a vacuum from that, mostly because i don’t fully know to interpret this from the perspective of the jeannie and sylvia story. this might be completely off from what the scary jokes intended but this is how i see it at least, thanks for having me 👋
