BOTD: Common Murre
Tumblr media
Photo: Kenneth Cole Schneider
"Widespread on Pacific Coast from Alaska to California, but more local in the east, being found mainly off eastern Canada. This large auk sits upright on sea cliffs, looking like a northern version of a penguin. It swims and dives expertly, but its flight appears labored. For its size, the Common Murre has the most densely packed nesting colonies of any bird species; nests may be so close together that incubating adults are actually touching other adults on both sides."

Most such helpers are nonbreeders; others have tried but failed to breed, while some have finished raising their family or are also taking care of their own chick.

Although it is difficult to draw firm conclusions without detailed study of individual birds, most males that engage in homosexual behavior in these species are probably functionally bisexual, since they are usually already paired with a female (although a few Common Murres who participate in such activity may be unpaired).

Final day of the job contract done. Couldn't help but hide one cardboard box doodle before leaving.
(In my defense, it says "MURRE" on the box. It's short for murskain, meaning crusher, as in trash disposal, but Murre is also a common generic dog name, so I was compelled. I know it'll make my work mates smile once they notice.)
