Clue One Picture me, waiting for you, Clothed only in coat of bright navy blue. Papers are scattered: letters, lists, charts and more. All the importance of your position shoved onto the floor. There’s no one here now, no lieutenant to knock. Our affair begins with a click of the lock.

The carefully penned note fell with his hand towards the floor, stopped only by BURDENED SHOULDERS that slumped under the weight of the situation Esmeralda had left in her wake.

His office was in shambles, papers tossed here and there, the entire room an upheaval of general clutter and DISARRANGEMENT. It wouldn’t have looked too out of place had his wife been in the center of it all, beckoning him forward to come and pay her his EVERY ATTENTION until she was satiated– but there had been only the note, curiously worded and undoubtedly written in her own hand. Esmeralda was nowhere to be found. No one had laid eyes on her since that morning, when the chambermaid had seen her off on an outing to Fort Charles to visit him.

Had she been carried off by some ne’er do well? An old enemy seeking revenge on the newly-pardoned Commodoress? Surely Esmeralda could have held her own against any presumed attacker; she was no DELICATE FLOWER, lovely as she was. She was strong, strong enough that she wouldn’t have been carried off without a trace, not unless she wanted to go. Or if she was–

James didn’t allow himself to finish that thought; half the town was already whispering what a COLD & CUNNING man he was, to lure a pirate into his own bed in order to dole out her deserved PUNISHMENT when she let down her guard. He set his jaw in determination, hard eyes scanning the scattered parchment, looking for any sort of clue that might have been left in the aftermath of DOÑA PIRATA’S DISAPPEARANCE.

Esmeralda alternates between two modes of referencing her own self-identity. In canon verses where she holds a multitude of titles, her given name is nearly taboo. It is never merely Esmeralda, but The Pirate Queen, Pirate Lord of the Caribbean, Doña Pirata, or even just captain. She finds strength in these where her given name is only a reminder of her human weakness and grief, and she would rather rise above her own identity into an ideal that she can mold and present to her crew / the denizens of Shipwreck / the world at large. But it’s much different in other verses where she doesn’t have those positions to claim. In verses like her marriage to James or harlots or what have you, it’s instead her own name she finds pride in, since she struggles so much to preserve her own identity separate to the situation in which she’s found herself. she’s not just a harlot, but a woman with a personality & mind separate to appeasing her culls. she’s not just James’ wife & subordinate, but still that spirit that he’s only taken off the ocean, and she still has goals and interests of her own. so insults like whore / trollop or even just Mrs. Norrington / the Commodoress politely really eats at her, because it denies her that sense of independence from her role and almost dehumanizes her to the part she plays.
