The Right Stuff: Rivalidad y pasiones en la carrera espacial

Más que ser la historia de los siete primeros astronautas de la NASA, la serie The Right Stuff cuenta, en realidad, la lucha por ser el primer estadounidense en viajar al espacio. Su interés trasciende la mera carrera espacial y se centra en la rivalidad entre dos hombres: los astronautas John Glenn (Patrick J. Adams) y Alan Shepard (Jake McDorman).
CNET en Español tuvo acceso a los primeros cinco episodios de los ocho que comprenden la primera temporada de la serie. Es el primer programa no documental que produce National Geographic. La serie es exclusiva de Disney Plus y la plataforma estrenará los dos primeros capítulos el viernes 9 de octubre, y luego hará disponible un nuevo episodio cada viernes.
La serie está basada en el libro The Right Stuff (1979), escrito por el maestro del nuevo periodismo Tom Wolfe, y que ya fue adaptado al cine con título homónimo por Philip Kaufman en 1983. La serie de Disney Plus no adapta completamente el libro de Wolfe, pues deja por fuera totalmente la historia del piloto Chuck Yeager, quien no perteneció al grupo de astronautas del proyecto Mercury de la NASA pero que el libro usa como ejemplo para describir los valores que tenía que tener uno de estos héroes "elegidos para la gloria".
El programa de National Geographic se centra en los primeros días del programa espacial de Estados Unidos, en pleno auge de la Guerra Fría y cuando los primeros éxitos de la Unión Soviética (al enviar el primer satélite al espacio) golpeó la moral estadounidense.
La serie dedica su primer episodio a la selección del grupo de los siete mejores pilotos de pruebas del ejército que la NASA seleccionó para convertirse en los primeros astronautas de EE.UU.: Deke Slayton (Micah Stock), Alan Shepard (Jake McDorman), Wally Shirra (Aaron Stanton), Gus Grisson (Michael Trotter), John Glenn (Patrick J. Adams), Gordon Cooper (Colin O'Donoghue) y Scott Carpenter (Jimmy Lafferty).
De los siete astronautas -- los llamados Mercury Seven--, la serie se concentra básicamente en tres, pues cada uno aporta un hilo dramático a la historia: John Glenn (Adams), con don de palabra y afición por la política y el poder, religioso, riguroso e individualista, con poco sentido del humor; Alan Shepard (McDorman), mujeriego, incapaz de expresar emociones, muy competitivo y decidido a ser el primer hombre en el espacio; y Gordon Cooper (O'Donoughue), un buen hombre con problema en su matrimonio con Trudy (Eloise Mumford), también piloto y quien puso su carrera y su vida independiente en un segundo plano para ayudar a su marido.
La serie no toma en cuenta mucho a los otros cuatro astronautas del Proyecto Mercury; y del personal de la NASA, solo se destacan tres personajes, pero no se ahonda en ellos. La NASA y los científicos son paisaje, decenas de hombres blancos con camisas blancas y corbatas negras que no hacen mucho más que poner cara de preocupación en la sala de control.
Los creadores de The Right Stuff apostaron, para obtener mejores efectos dramáticos, poner el foco en la rivalidad entre Glenn y Shepard, pues la serie se convierte en una intriga sobre cuál de ellos será el escogido para ser el primer hombre en llegar al espacio. Es una historia de ambición, de obsesión por la gloria, con una abundante carga de ego.
Si te gusta la carrera espacial y la historia de la NASA, la serie ofrece un pobre servicio pues no logra evadir el discurso de que el "estilo de vida" estadounidense estaba en peligro si Estados Unidos no ganaba la carrera espacial. Es un discurso sentimental, con arengas a favor del trabajo en equipo como lección de vida y guía moral.

What I like the most about Hook is not his sexyness, or appearance. He is one of those characters that are actually greatly treated by OUAT writers. Even though he is always failing, even if someone sees him as a failure or a joke. HE is not.
He is the pirate from Peter Pan's story. The one with a hook on his hand and a terrifying fear for a ticking crocodile in Disney's adaptation. He is evil because he does bad things, he kills, he threats, he tortures. But in the end, he is always the one whose saved, interrupted or stopped by the good ones.
First, it was Emma, the girl who was abandoned. The girl who's the product of true love magic. The girl who sees the lies. Then, it was Belle, the girl who likes books. The girl who's bravery is not behind the power of a sword but the strength of her mind.
Hook is great because he fails. He fails because good always wins. And he represents this bad guy whose not so bad, because he does everything for love. He is blind for revenge. He does not want anymore. As in the story of Peter Pan, Hook wanted revenge on Peter Pan for stealing from him, for being the cause of his lost hand.
I don't like that every one is putting the hate on him because he wanted to die. That's something completely wrong. It is not Hook's fault, but the writers fault who decided going Out of character for him to "ask" for death.
I wish people could see this in him. Because he is a great character. Yes, he fails, but he fails because he is bad. He is not an all-powerful being such as Cora or Rumplestilskin, he has his limits. But his darkness, THAT is limitless. He would do whatever it takes to take his revenge. And now that he's got it, he would find something to do. Pirates are free, they have no other boss than their captain and their sea.
I think i've lost my point. But, anyway, I'm hoping tonight's episode >.< and see what comes to my pirate.
