Have you ever had troubles creating perfect angles with slabs before? I am a self-proclaimed perfectionist, and I have never been able to get my slabs to come out as straight as I want them to. You can spank the clay with a paddle all you want; some warps just won’t come out. Now, I am no expert, so this week’s technique may seem obvious to you. Today, I am going to talk about the new method I found for getting PERFECT 90-degree angles that are worth phoning home about.
This week’s featured building technique is from ceramic artist Marcia Selsor. She was struggling to support two slabs that she was joining to hang on a wall. So, she set out to build a custom tool to serve this purpose: a right-angle jig. The jig is a simple plywood structure that supports two ware boards at a right angle. Slabs are then placed on wood and help in place to be attached. Over the years, she said it has proved to be a very useful too when building geometric forms.
Below I will link the steps that Marcia so kindly gave us to construct this jig. I am very motivated by cost in terms of supplies, and I can tell you that this is a very inexpensive way to make your own tool. I have made something like her example with cardboard, and that does the trick if you are moving quickly.
