First outdoor ride of 2023! 😍😍😍 Finally got the part I needed to fix Carnage! High of 0°C, windchill was -4°C ... a cold north wind was beating on me but the trees provided some respite. Proper clothing and layering sure helps .. plus my battery-heated socks 😁🙃🤣 Feeling the sun on my skin - when it wasn't covered - was so amazing! 😍🥰 I started going thru Heber Down but it was hiker Hell .. so off to Greenwood I went. I find the old, and I mean old, jumps and stunts .. or at least what was left of them. Here's a look at my 2022 highlights! It was another great year of long rides, short rides, dirt, gravel, indoor & road rides, hikes, kayaks, cross-country skis ... hundreds of adventures. Some with friends, some solo but each one exactly what I needed when I needed it. Someone asked me once why I ride so much .. aside from the fitness benefits, it's my mental well-being that gets the biggest boost. In order to be present and useful to those around me, I need to be present and useful to my myself first. Some days .. things don't go as originally planned but in the end it all works out. I might have a few seconds of 🤬🤪🤬🤪🤬 but if one plan blows up, I switch gears and hit plan #2. There is very little that we do that is actually set in stone .. being flexible on some things is so much easier. I drove up to Trail Hub this morning to ride my usual trails. After getting all my winter gear on and pulling the bike out, I realized I had left my gloves at home 🤬🤪🤬🤪🤬🤪🤬🤬🤬 It was waaaay too cold 🥶 to attempt riding without gloves .. so I loaded my bike and drove back home. Instead of focusing on my gloves, I made a new plan. At first, I was going to drive back to Trail Hub. But there are some real idiots on the road ... Sunday Drivers, you know who you are .. stay home! Then I thought I would give Greenwood a go .. I haven't ridden there in years on my mountain bike (gravel bike, yes, but that's different 🙃🙃). So off I went to Ajax, with my gloves, and spent 2 hours noodling around Greenwood in the snow and cold. And it was awesome! I found some trails I had never ridden .. some that dead-ended where I used to ride .. some that have overgrown from lack of riding .. and then found some more new stuff. I forgot just how good Greenwood can be .. in the right conditions. Off course, there had to be some off-leash dog walkers there but I'll email the Town about them. Pariahs of trails 🤬🤬🤬 It was great riding on the snow for the first time this season. Great traction and smooth trails. The wind was INSANE! Cool and crisp autumn day .. long sleeves necessary 😲😭 .. lots of fun sessioning the big rock at Skin & Bones. Beautiful deep blue sky and some trees are changing outfits for the season. There's still lots of green in the forest. This monkey has taken over the knothole from the gnomes... but I found one of the gnomes collecting beer money near @trailhubdurham 🤪🤣 Got some new branding stickers for my gear from @veloink .. a little big but they look sharp. All told .. Uxbridge Slam of 51.4km and under 4 hours. I wasn't hammering too hard but kept a steady pace without many stops. Had to wait for hikers far too many times and one aggressive off-leash dog. Well .. that didn't go exactly as planned 🤪🤪🤪 Tonight's ride started off great ... ripping through Heber Down before finding quiet gravel roads in North Ajax and Pickering. It was a grand adventure! I've seen photos of this boat dumped on the side of the road, so I thought I'd go find it. It was only 35km away ... that's nothing. BTW, can Monette Oliphant or her family come collect their garbage before winter comes? Idiots! And Hayden needs to work on his tagging "skillz" 🤪🤣🙃 So while I was taking photos in the boat, the wind knocked Carnage over. I didn't think much of it until I went to ride away and my bike made a funny sound. I looked down and the derailleur hanger had snapped 🤬🤬🤬 It's meant to do that so your rear derailleur doesn't get broken. Only problem is that I don't have a spare hanger on me. Everyone asks me why I carry zip ties... now you know! I attached the derailleur to the frame out of the way and then had to shorten the chain. This meant no shifting and I had to decide what gear to be stuck in. Since the ride was mainly downhill, I went with big ring and tiny cog at the back 😁😁😁 My quads are a little sore but I made it home in great time. Now to get a couple new hangers and new chain. Second last day of August. I needed 70km to complete my goal of 1,500km for Great Cycle Challenge Canada so I rolled off 40km on Carnage ... down Oshawa Creek Trail, across the WTF Trail to Whitby and then back home. Sunset was stunning! Only Mother Nature can make the train tracks and 401 look better! The wind was whipping up a frenzy on the Lake, but Celina was safe in Port. The sky was mesmerizing all along the WTF but quickly turned dark as I got home. August is the Great Cycle Challenge Canada. I'm riding 1,500km this August and raising money to support SickKids Foundation and cancer research. This is my seventh year supporting GCCC. I now know two children who have or are fighting this terrible disease and one more who lost his fight💔.
