Will You Be My Valentine? - AKYR + AMPRULE

Hokusai Masaki:

Hokusai realized, almost too late, that he had to actually ask you to be his valentine for you to know that you were his. He had been going based off your relationship, the closeness you had making him logically arrive at the conclusion that you were his valentine, but he was informed that it was not the way it worked. When he had gone to seek you out he found you anxious and shuffling on your feet, surprised that you felt so nervous about asking him to be your valentine when he had already made that choice long ago.

Iori Suiseki:

Iori had suspected you were up to something but had patiently sat back, not one to assume but certainly knowing what was on your mind. You still managed to surprise him with a homemade gift as well as asking him to be yours for Valentine’s Day, the genuine smile on his face and his laughter filling the room the best gift you could’ve asked for. He wrapped you in a hug, pulling you as close as he could before letting you know he had already made plans for the two of you. If asked on why he didn’t make the first move he just laughed again, saying it was always pleasant to be the one pursued (and that he’d make your efforts worthwhile, in the end).

Reo Maruyama:

Reo winked, flirted, and accepted all gifts tossed his way on Valentine’s Day. Someone with his charm was used to all of this attention, but it could get exhausting after constant stimulation from others for hours on end. Plus, it never felt quite as special as a valentine really should, which he never realized until he had someone solid in mind that he wanted as his valentine. He’s glad that you’re the one who asked because it meant he could hide how in love with you he was (since he considered making the first move, which he certainly doesn’t do for just anyone), and he immediately rattled off all the things he wanted to do on that day with you since he hadn’t stopped thinking about it since the month began.

Satsuki Ito:

Satsuki cuts you off QUICK, on his knees like he’s groveling as he held your hands tight and began to sweat. There’s an awkward pause as you wait for him to explain the feral yell that was torn from his throat but it seemed he needed another minute to think, perhaps regretting his hasty reaction. He had to be the one to ask, after all, but the courage didn’t suddenly appear like he hoped it would. He does manage to stutter out the question because he’s not a quitter, but he won’t make eye contact, especially not after Reo asks why it looked like he was proposing.

Zen Gaho:

Zen is fighting to hide how hot his face is growing, touching his own burning hot cheeks and wondering how he got lucky enough to attract your attention. After pining away for you for who knows how long, finally having the confirmation that you felt the same for him was almost too much to bear. You cradle his face in your hands as he started to tear up, refusing to actually let them fall as he didn’t want to ruin the mood but he couldn’t help how overwhelmed with emotion he was. He would make this your most romantic Valentine’s Day yet!

AMPRULE

Chungsung Baek:

Chungsung is pleasantly surprised, licking his lips at the homemade gift you hand to him after asking him to be your valentine. While he doesn’t presume he’ll have any free-time on that day, much like he doesn’t most days as he attends to his master, he’s still flattered that you asked. He supposed he could carve out some of his own personal time while Dongha was busy to spend with you, not quite an official date but there were a few meals he could whip up that the two of you could enjoy together. He’s never pursued a relationship like this but he’s excited to see where it may lead.

Dongha Yeon:

You had debated on even asking Dongha as it didn’t seem like something he’d be interested in, but you had done stupider things to get his attention before so you thought you might as well. He’s actually quite surprised to hear the question, to have such a blatant act of affection thrown in his face like this leaves him frozen. Did you want something from him? Surely being seen with the Yeon heir would do wonders for you, but your stuttered out ‘date plan’ only consisted of spending time together indoors watching movies… What did you want from him? He accepted, because he certainly couldn’t have you asking someone else to be your valentine, and he’d simply have to probe you later to find out what your motives were.

thinking about dongha. he is just a kid and a victim of his circumstances and desperate to regain some kind of autonomy in his life but has grown up believing he is only ever allowed to be exceptional in everything he does to be respected and cared for / safe in his home. he is just a kid who likes candied apples because they are reminiscent of the first (and last) time he got to experience childhood, when childhood went from being an idealised concept (an alternative) to a very tangible, real, possibly attainable experience that could exist within the current state of his (at the time) very little, very treacherous world. he is just a kid who likes candied apples and is searching for a place in the world which he can carve out to fit himself into rather than be carved by someone else's hands to become something he's expected to be, against his wishes. i don't know... i get sad just thinking about it.

he is just a kid who is rightfully world-weary and resentful but at the same time, too young to be able to handle such aged feelings. he is just a kid and i think he misses his brother even if he won't admit it to himself because that may have been the first and last time he felt cared for without having to fight to earn it. maybe he resents hajun for that, too - for showing him he didn't have to fight so hard to be given a good thing, for showing him possibility and then just disappearing. his resentment for his brother seems to be rooted in this sense of abandonment but also nurtured by hajun's lingering presence in every instance that he's used as a yardstick to measure dongha's accomplishments. (also that one voice track with BAE where he quizzed anne and allen so he could talk to hajun came off as quite territorial to me, but also very desperate, and from a place of frustration, because after so long of conceptualising "family" as simply a formal, functional unit, he's struggling to understand that "family" can also mean home.)

i think, the bottom line is: he's just a kid and he's struggling but after growing up under the pressures of perfectionism, he doesn't think he's allowed to struggle. that it is okay.

i don't know, man... he's just a kid. he's just a kid, okay, and i hope eventually, victorious or not, the winning begins to matter a little less and enjoying what he's doing (regardless of outcome) matters a little more. i think losing was a necessary experience for him to understand that it is possible and hajun talking him out of leaving is critical to dongha understanding that he can commit to something he's not automatically the best at because! he can build something for himself from the ground-up this once! something that belongs to him because it was made by him and not his parents! that someone believes in his ambitions even if he begins at less-than-perfect! (love you, hajun.)

idk idk... dongha is chasing, chasing, chasing and i hope he finds what he's looking for, and what he needs. i'm rooting for him and every credible experience that nurtures his growth. i'm just sad. he is just a kid.

actually yknow what I will Not stop talking about amprule 4th anniversary art because I know Uri (the artist who designed amprule) puts so much detail into each drawing they make of them so let's break down this banger artwork together

Let's start simple! A pink rose! Pink roses signify elegance and deeper colored ones can signify appreciation! While the characters themselves are Korean, their artist is Japanese, so I also looked up what they mean in Hanakotoba (Japanese flower language) they signify trust, happiness and confidence! Considering their dynamic, these could be the meanings they were going for!!

Up next the dog & the cat. They are possibly a Maine Coon and a Pyrenean Mountain Dog!

From what I've gathered the Pyrenees are used as a livestock guardian. Because of this they are rather protective of their family, as well as loyal and loving but also do not get along well with strangers. All of which work for a rather good descriptor of Chungsung considering how he has dedicated himself to taking care of and protecting Dongha.

Maine Coons, from what I know of them, are curious cats who'll follow you around and try to get included in whatever their owners are doing. So basically, they're giant cats that are clingy. Which, again, works well with Dongha, since he clings to the people he loves! He is afraid of being left behind by Chungsung and he has always been clinging to support he had provided for him.

Now this part might be a reach but when it comes to Uri's art I'm not leaving any idea unsaid. Compared to how the dog is sleeping peacefully in Dongha's lap, the cat is looking at somewhere else, possibly showing how Dongha is desperately trying to get his father's approval?

I would also like to add that in the extra art Uri posted, it is pretty much made clear that the animals are supposed to represent each other, thus signifying the trust they have for one another.

And at last, the color swap. It is my favorite part of the whole thing ngl. Colors mean a lot of for Amprule in my opinion, green means Dongha and red means Chungsung. In their original designs Chungsung's reds are Dongha's accessories, they're eye catching and are mostly associated with hearts. Meanwhile Dongha's greens are naturally blended into Chungsung's clothes with a gorgeous pattern inside his coat. In this illustration however they covered in each other's colors! Hell, in Dongha's case he's covered head to toe in pink!! And this is a Huge Thing especially considering how their main colors contrast each other (but when two colors are contrasting they are also complementary).

But also gold means Dongha and silver means Chungsung. In an interview with Uri, they talk about how they used the gold & silver accessories to show their power imbalance. While it's not a complete swap, bronze & pearl keeps it similar to the colors of gold & silver without losing their difference in monetary value.

It's Dongha's brooch that sums it all up perfectly, green & red and bronze & pearls together in one beautiful piece of jewelry. Put a crown on top of it and that's Amprule.

In the end, I think this is the perfect illustration to showcase how Amprule has changed and will keep changing!! And here's to hoping that sometime soon they'll wear each others colors in not so muted tones.

Chungsung Baek:

Chungsung’s expression is unreadable, and truly he didn’t mind the abuse although it wasn’t as sweet coming from someone he didn’t see as his ‘master’… But to have you step in to bear the brunt of it was quite interesting to him. He teasingly asked if you were perhaps a masochist, stating he had never seen you lose your cool but it was an attractive side to you. He asked if he could be on the other side of the vitriol, just to see what it looks like when you’re facing off with an opponent, requesting you not to hold back as he could surely take anything you threw his way.

Nayuta Yatonokami:

Nayuta knew when to not let things bother him, but it seemed like you took offense on his behalf regardless. He wished you hadn’t picked the fight as it was just drawing more attention and energy that you didn’t need to expend, but he supposed the show of affection for him was appreciated. He hoped you didn’t think he needed you to defend him, his ignoring the heckling was on purpose, and he’d inform you as such as you’re stepping away from the crowd that formed. He was surprised when you said it was just natural, like your body had reacted before your brain could, and he had to think about how deeply ingrained in your heart he was for you to have such a reaction.

Ryoga Tosa:

Ryoga is taken aback. He can’t remember the last time someone stood in the line of fire for him directly, normally the one to ‘defend’ or at least be a shield for others. He knew his temper had to be kept in check thus he couldn’t indulge those who started fights with him, but it almost made it worse to watch you take the brunt of it because he couldn’t. It does make it easier to walk away from the fight as he would truly lose his cool if you got hurt, not sure how to thank you for standing up for him or how to let you know how meaningful it was that you wished to protect him.

Yuto Inukai:

Yuto’s eyes are wide as you stepped in to scold the others, finger wagging like a disappointed school teacher. He’s not used to even Kenta keeping his lips zipped, though he was still scowling and cursing under his breath; seeing the others with their tails between their legs was a first. He wondered if the same thing happened when the other guy popped out, then becoming silently grateful for the fact that he wouldn’t because of your interference. There’s a little sigh of relief when the others go back to what they had been doing before the fighting broke out, Yuto giving you a little relieved smile of thanks.
