a mess of mature promethea moth caterpillars (Callosamia promethea) wriggling plumply after spending a little less than a month fattening up on wild cherry leaves
a smaller relative of the cecropia moth, these are one of the less well-known giant silkmoths in the US, but they might just be my favorite species to raise.

Time for a moth update- sorry for the delay!
Tumblr media
If you remember this cross-species pairing from a while ago? Unfortunately it seems like this did not turn out to be a fertile pairing, since the cecropia is laying eggs rather lethargically. Still, it was a rare event to witness!
Tumblr media
A comparison in size between Hyalophora cecropia and Callosamia promethea. Huge difference.
Tumblr media
If that doesn’t give you an idea of the size of cecropia moths this might. They get even bigger than this!
Tumblr media
A leftover photo that shows variation in individuals within a species. Notice the varying colors!
Tumblr media
Since I can’t monitor the promethea moth eggs while I’m away, I made this setup to help them! This fine mesh cage is tightly zipped around a black cherry (Prunus serotina) branch and will provide plenty fresh food for if the caterpillars if they hatch.
For now that’s all in relation to my saturniid moths; thank you for the patience! I’ll try and share more photos of things outside of them soon!

Promethea Silkmoth (Callosamia promethea)
Family: Saturniidae (Saturniid Moth Family)
IUCN Conservation Status: Unassessed
Female Promethea Silkmoths are reddish brown and are active at night, while males are black and are active during the day. The difference in colouration between the two may be a result of their differing periods of activity- males have evolved to closely resemble the Pipevine Swallowtail (a poisonous species of butterfly) in order to deter potential predators such as songbirds and woodpeckers which are active during the day, while females avoid these predators entirely by only flying at night and so do not need to utilize mimicry to survive (although why males are active while females are not is something of a mystery, as they only survive for a very short period in their adult form and in this time their only aim is to find mates.) A short period in the early evening is the only time when both males and females are active at the same time, and as such it is only during this time that mating can occur - when receptive to mating a female will land on a suitably safe plant and produce pheromones to notify nearby males of her location. Shortly after mating a female will seek out a suitable host plant (which may include spicebushes, lilacs, sassafras or black cherry trees) and will lay a cluster of between 4 and 10 small, white, oval-shaped eggs on its leaves, which the caterpillars will later feed on as they grow. After reaching a suitable size and age the caterpillars will attach themselves to the underside of a leaf using silk that they produced from specialized organs known as spinnerets found near their mouth before wrapping the remains of the leaf around themselves to serve as a cocoon. They spend the winter in their cocoons and emerge as adults in the following spring, being ready to mate within hours of emerging and dying within a few weeks. Found in deciduous forests across the central and eastern USA, this species is immediately noticeable thanks to its considerable wingspan of between 7 and 10cm, with females typically growing to be larger than males.

Bug of the Day
Wee moth baybays!!! These are Promethea Moth caterpillars, Callosamia promethea, doing some aggregate feeding on black cherry...I am raising them from eggs. I have yet to catch them in the process of feeding, but they are so cute congregating in their little caterpillar clusters during the day!
