Highlights of Eps 489-491
SPOILER ALERT
Tumblr media
Soojin Kim (the sister) told Jewoo Park (the leader of Cheonliang Fam) that Vin went to attack the shaman Shinmyeong Cheon because of what she told him regarding his mother.
Tumblr media
The Cheonliang Fam rushed to save Vin (or prevent him from killing), but actually only Vin managed to even get inside Shinmyeong's residence and did some minor damage.
Vin told them that he had to do this for his mother, whom the shaman killed, or else he wouldn't be able to live with himself.
The shaman's men, particularly the yakshas and the Gwang Yoo trio whom Shinmyeong hired, were stronger than them.
Tumblr media
Even though Vin managed to surprise Beolgu Lee, who suspected the teenager's lineage as Mujin's son, he was still no match for Beolgu.
Just as the kids were cornered (Mary even had to carry Vin on her back), Seongji came and saved them. They ran away, but followed by Beolgu, Gwang, and Jaesu Noh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently Seongji got there after Soojin told him what happened, and Seongji burned down his house, then decided to face Shinmyeong once and for all, even if he had to die.
The Kojima brothers were overwhelmed by Seongji's actual strength, and Shinmyeong was worried.
Tumblr media
Especially since the young King of Cheonliang told him that he wasn't actually indebted to the two yakshas, or the Gwijeon Brothers (Ghost Legend) as Gabryong and Baekho used to call them. Yes, Seongji's actual teacher was none other than Mujin Jin: Vin's father.
Tumblr media
Then, supposedly delegated by Charles Choi to help Shinmyeong "clean" the mess, James Lee arrived at the scene.
Tumblr media
To Shinmyeong's annoyance, James came instead of Gun. Additionally, instead of fighting Seongji right away, young James offered Seongji a position as the manager of the budding four crews: someone who was better than "the two people I got first" (was James referring to Gun and Goo?). And was hiring a minor always in the plan from the get-go, yet James was willing to hire Seongji instead?
Seongji refused, and he and James dueled, each topping the other, from broken collarbone to fighting with one's hands out of one's pockets, speed against speed, strength against strength.
Tumblr media
James saw that he and Seongji fought in a similar way: tough and powerful, with only differences in experiences.
The duel was so fiercely brutal, until in the end Seongji remembered how Mujin told him to believe in himself, literally his entire body (and his "cool" hands and feet, especially-- this is why he called Vin's eyes "cool") and won against James.
Tumblr media
In satisfaction, Seongji reminded James that there was someone who surpassed him (and that person was Seongji).
We saw that the jacket Seongji tied around his hip was Mujin's all along, just like the daenggi (ribbon) of Vin's mother was also Mujin's.

Lookism Panel: A Cinematic Analysis (5)
SPOILER ALERT
Ep 485 vs The Wailing (2016)
Tumblr media
In The Wailing (2016), the ghostly woman turned out to be a local woman who stood naked in a rainy night because she was possessed after interacting with the dubious shaman and the Japanese demon. In Ep 485, the ghostly woman was a girl who turned up with loosened clothing, and was probably harmed by either the shaman, Taejin, or the Japanese lackeys.

lookism ch 484 semi analysis semi rant
ok so MAYBE im just projecting good character writing onto lookism because frankly, after the shitshow that was 1A, i have lost a lot of confidence in ptj's writing abilities, but i GENUINELY think the ending sequence of today's chapter was incredibly done

like... idk...
it's not that vin jin didn't want to be saved. he did. he spoke out against the shaman and the village and probably secretly wanted someone to agree and to change their ways and save him; it's just that he felt like it was too hard and too embarrassing to be saved by a village that hated his very existence. every time he tried to speak out against what was happening to him, he would only be punished, so he was gradually taught that wanting to be saved was something shameful and that would be punished. and since he would only get disappointed again and again by trying to look for salvation, he decided he would stop looking. he takes pride in that, really. he takes pride in growing up and fending off the bullies and being strong and he hates the idea of needing to be saved because... why wouldn't he?
it's never worked in the past. a mix of his defense mechanism of being a mean person to stop others from hurting him and his internal self-hatred that secretly believes that he brings suffering to the people around him and that he is a monster combine to create a sort of "i'm good enough on my own. i neither want nor need to be saved" kind of mentality. he doesn't want to be vulnerable enough to admit that he really wants to be saved so seeing him take that first step admit that "yes, i want to be saved" is SUCH a cathartic moment. it's like that one kim dokja "ah, as i thought, i'm glad i survived" moment. it's not a particularly poetic or life-changing statement, but the fact that it comes from someone that, before this point, has only ever wanted to die and has never expressed that they wanted to be save or keep living just makes it hit a lot harder.
and the fact that he is validated for the first time after this, not only because he realizes that seongji, someone he perceives as cool and strong and noble is also a "monster" like him (thus indirectly implying that he can also change his circumstances and improve his station), but also because he was finally recognized as anything but a monster.... i think the expression in that panel really expresses that emotion well. the sort of warmth and shock from being cared for and approved of for the first time since his mom died.
its just so UGH... but maybe im reading too much into it.

Highlights of Ep 483
SPOILERS ALERT
"Drowning so much, I'm affected by the ripple. Feeling so low that I can't even see the middle. Dark days, lost ways, made me feel little..." - "Something Beautiful", Tom Walker and Masked Wolf
Tumblr media
Cheonliang Fam was basically the kids who were pupils of Yook Seongji's, the King of Cheonliang. They were present at Seongji's house, enjoying tanghulu candies, when Vin came barging in naked and begging to be killed.
Tumblr media
Seongji wondered whether Vin really wanted to die, as the boy rambled on and on about how the monster in the mountain turned out to be this candy-eating hobo, to his dismay. To that, Seongji replied that Vin ate so many of his tanghulu candies anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Cheonliang Fam members, consisting of Park Jewoo, Lim Taebong, Choi Wooseok, and Lee Hyungjae, told Vin that Seongji had been teaching them the truth behind the Child God Cult's manipulations.
To that, Vin told them that it was all a futile crap, and Jewoo stood up to beat him up for being rude at school (Seongji's School of Truth). Vin was stronger than Jewoo, however, and before the other three kids could do anything but rushing at Vin, they were stopped by a girl.
This girl was none other than Mary. Because she was big, Vin mockingly called her The Elephant Monster, to which she replied by throwing him down.
Fainting, Vin realized that she was the strongest person he had ever met so far.
Tumblr media
It appears that Taejin was the culprit who called the students to the sacrifice ritual, just so they could watch Vin walking all naked and paraded in the street. Having made this conclusion, Vin was livid when Taejin flippantly said that the other kids were bound to find out sooner or later, anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When one of the kids was about to shame Vin further, Taejin even condescendingly stopped the kid, leaving a grand impression on that kid and the others that he was such a good person.
Vin came rushing at Taejin to punch him but Taejin pulled a Kudo move on him, having learned about the martial art from his father's Japanese bodyguards.
The kids cheered for Taejin, for trampling on the Eye Monster, who is none other than Vin. But Vin defiantly told them that they were the stupid ones for following the Shaman and his entourage and giving up everything for the cult. Yet it was Vin who was called the Eye Monster.
But Vin wasn't completely alone, it seems. Four boys stood up for him: The Cheonliang Fam. And Mary threw Taejin down, announcing that anyone who caused a ruckus at school would be stopped by The Elephant.
Tumblr media
Being rescued didn't make Vin grateful. Simply because years of abuse made him believe that the Shaman would be out to get them anyway. But Jewoo told him that Mary's fame as a young, promising judoka shielded him from harm, even though her own parents were neck deep in the cult.
Tumblr media
Jewoo welcome Vin in the fold. They were impressed that Vin stood up to Taejin like that, and promised to protect Vin from the shaman. Offended, Vin lunged at him but he was thrown thrice by Jewoo, Taebong and Wooseok. All of them were good at ssireum, the Korean traditional wrestling sport, and it was Seongji the King who taught them. The reason why Vin defeated Jewoo the day before was because Jewoo held back: Seongji had warned them that ssireum was a dangerous sport.
The shaman's bodyguards found the kids. Their leader, a former member of the Yamazaki faction (Gun's) named Kojima Shigeaki, told Vin to get ready for the next sacrifice ritual.
Tumblr media
Mary and the other Cheonliang Fam members tried to stop them but failed, since Kojima and his two lackeys were stronger than the kids. As they moved to execute Wooseok, somebody else came to the clearing.
It was Seongji. He came and crushed the ribcages of the two lackey bodyguards... with his six fingered-hands. Yes, he was the original sacrifice boy who ran away.
Tumblr media
Kojima taunted whether Seongji wanted to start "another war". Seongji retorted that it was Kojima who started all of this, anyway. And he said that would show Kojima and the other two, why he was called The King of Cheonliang.
Notes:
I'm so glad that Mary's characterization and illustration are very humane. There's even a new sense of purpose and direction in the way she's written: what with her ambition as a young athlete and her conflict with her manipulated family members.
However, I wish PTJ didn't retcon her hair color because originally in the God Dog arc it was implied that Mary didn't color her hair before she came to Seoul, but after. This was why Vin was surprised to see her as a blonde after he removed his tinted glasses for the first time in the arcade, after his duel versus Ivan Park.
I wish we saw Taejin's upbringing from up close. From what I read and watched in cult docuseries and books, children of cult leaders either turned into power hungry figures, dysfunctional individuals, or people who disassociate from such cults or any belief system. But all of these results stemmed from a distorted upbringing. So I think it would be interesting to see how the events in Taejin's formative years led up to his bizarrely wrong choices.

Lookism Panel: A Cinematic Analysis (3)
TW: Violence
Continuing my October post plan about horror references in Lookism.
This panel when Vin tried to stab his eye as a child, is a reference to the Korean shamanic tradition about spirit possession (that it's usually felt through the eye and the inner eye of the possessed person). So it wasn't just because he felt that he was the village monster and was desperate, you see. Vin must've really believed that gouging his polycoria eye out, or blinding it, could exorcise an evil spirit out of his body.
Tumblr media
The spirit possession through the eye is a phenomenon that's shown in at least two Korean horror fiction: the film Phone (2002), where a character stabbed her eye to stop a vengeful ghost from haunting her, and the popular kdrama Sohn:The Guest (2018), where a series of possessions was marked by people who stabbed their possessed eyes. In the kdrama, these people were desperate to get rid of the possession as well as to follow the spirit at the same time (two conflicting ideals).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Posters of the film Phone (2002) and the kdrama Sohn: The Guest (2018). I really recommend watching the latter if you're into haunted village trope in horror.
