A 20-minute chat between Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday seems to have paved the way for a partial resumption of flights to and from Mumbai, which makes up for a bulk of domestic air traffic in the country, besides some other cities in the state. On Day One, 50 flights will be allowed to and from Mumbai.

However, the Maharashtra government has not yet approved taxi or auto service in Mumbai and passengers will be required to make their own travel arrangements to and from the airport.

Till the time of going to press, airlines were unable to finalise their schedule. Mumbai’s schedule was being reworked. Tamil Nadu’s airports — Chennai and Madurai — hadn’t yet communicated to the Centre how many flights it would allow.

Airline call centres were flooded with calls from worried passengers as their flights were being cancelled last minute due to states reducing the number of flights.

Maharashtra government, which has been trying to ground the Centre’s flight plan due to a spike in Covid-19 cases in the state, had told Mumbai International Airport on Saturday that commercial air transport must not resume at this point.

“We believe passengers who have booked over the last two-three days will need to travel as soon as possible. Hence, we will be allowing free date change as requested by passengers,” said Vistara’s Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan.

Besides Maharashtra, the Centre held back-to-back meetings with some other states through the weekend to be able to resume domestic air operations from Monday.

“After Saturday’s announcement by Mumbai airport, we were on standby to cancel all flights to and from the city. Then we were told that 45 departures and 45 arrivals will be permitted. Finally, it was reduced to 25 departures and 25 arrivals. We had to cancel at the last moment and inform passengers. Things should have been done in a more planned manner,” said an airline executive late on Sunday.

However, a ministry official defended the Centre’s move, saying states’ disagreement had more to do with political calls rather than operational. “We have to understand that the economy needs to restart and cannot be perpetually kept under lockdown,” the official said. Airlines said for the first day, occupancy of flights will range between 60 per cent and 70 per cent. However, despite attempts by the Centre, states haven’t agreed to dilute their quarantine guidelines. Almost all prominent states, except Delhi, have mandated quarantine after landing.

“This will hit demand further. On one Bengaluru flight, we just have 35 passengers,” said an airline executive. Only 35 per cent of the original summer schedule flights will be allowed in the first phase to maintain social distancing. Delhi airport, which has over 60 aircraft movements per hour, is allowing 14 per hour. Initially, airports will operate for a limited period against whole day to make time for sanitisation of terminals. Persons above 80 years of age will not be allowed to fly during the first phase, while wearing mask will be compulsory in airport and for the entire duration of the flight.

Kodaikanal is a quiet hill station at an altitude of 2,195 m, on the southern ridge of the Palani hills in Tamil Nadu. It is popular amongst the locals as well as other tourists and has earned the nickname of Princess of Hill Stations. Kodaikanal means ‘the gift of the forest’. The hilly retreat was established by American missionaries around 1845 in order to escape from the high temperatures of the plains. There are also some boarding schools of international repute here.It mesmerizes you with its beauty and tranquility.It is also called as honeymooners’ haven, . The pride of Kodaikanal is the ‘Kurinji-flower’, which blossoms once in 12 years, imparting an ethereal beauty to the hills.

Kodaikanal seems to be bestowed with all forms of beauty by Nature-majestic hills, mighty rocks, beautiful waterfalls, a serene lake, fruit orchards, lush flora -which makes it one of the most popular hill stations in South India.

By Air

Nearest airport to Kodaikanal is Madurai airport which is at a distance of 120 km from Kodaikanal. Madurai is air connected to Chennai and Coimbatore. Coimbatore is the nearest major airport which is connected to many cities in India. Coimbatore is about 180 km from Kodaikanal. Taxi cabs charge about Rs 2500 from Madurai and Rs 4000 from Coimbatore to Kodaikanal.

Local Transport: Rental bicycles, taxis and vans are available and a limited number of city buses are also available but there are no auto-rickshaws.

Tourist Places In and Around Kodaikanal

The Lake

A magnificent star-shaped lake glitters like a jewel amidst the emerald green wooded slopes. This 24 hectare lake is skirted by 5 Kms long, black tapped road is focal point of kodai, This lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Hendry Levinge, who was the collector of Madurai, retired and settled in kodai.

Berijam Lake

It is the most attractive picnic spot for any tourist in Kodaikanal which is situated about 23 km from the local bus stand.

Berijam Lake is a must see place as sighting of bison, leopard and other chirping birds are very common here. Apart from this, the tourists will also be able to take a boat trip along this beautiful lake and it will be a wonderful and refreshing experience for them. Berijam can only be visited with the permission from the District Forest Officer as it is not opened to general public.

The Glass House is an added attraction. It hosts the annual horticultural show held here in May.

Pillar Rocks

The Pillar rocks are three granite boulders which are seen standing vertically shoulder to shoulder and it is now a very famous tourist spot for many visitors. These rocks are measuring a height of about 400 feet from the ground and the chambers that are seen between the two pillars are known as Devil’s Kitchen.

The Pillar Rocks have gained popularity as the years have passed by and during the peak season there is a huge rush of visitors to this place. The shady woods that are in the vicinity of these huge boulders are a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic

Solar Physical Observatory

3.2 Kms. From the Lake Elevation is 2343 meters. It was founded in 1989 at the top most point in Kodai. Visitors are allowed to closely observe the start, planetary movements etc., during visiting hours and Prior appointments.

Shenbaganur Museum

The Shenbaganur Museum has an impressive collection of stuffed-birds and the butterflies. The Flora and Fauna Museum is maintained by the Sacred Heart College. A Theological Seminary was founded in 1895. It is devoted to the archaeological remains and the flora and fauna of the hills. One of the best Orchidoriums in the country with more than 300 species is also located here. It is about 5.6 Kms from the lake. A Spanish Father Ugarthe, contributed his major collections to the Museum. A wide ranging collection of birds classified into ground birds, water birds, tree birds and large high flying birds such as Black Eagle, Bengal Vulture, Honey Buzzard, Crested.

It is about 5.5 Kms from the lake and located very close to Golf club, it commands a beautiful view of entire vaigai dam, As the valley is very deep, dense and dangerous, recommended to see with precautionary measures.

Coaker’s walk

Any tourist interested in morning walk will definitely have to visit Coaker’s walk which is about 1 km from the lake and it provides very picturesque view of the plains as well as scenic valleys that is sure to bring a joy in the minds of the visitors. Coaker’s walk is named after Lt. Coaker, who prepared the map of Kodaikanal.

A telescopic view house is there at Coaker’s walk that will provide a panoramic view of the valley, plains and the nearby towns and should not be missed by the tourists visiting the place. The ideal time to visit this place is before 2:30 pm in the afternoon as mist will start to set in over the valleys by late afternoons.

Devil’s Kitchen

It is a very dangerous deep hidden ravine that looks like small dark gutters but are actually a deep fall. There are plenty of tourists who visit this place and is a must see spot for adventurous tourists.

The Devil’s Kitchen is found to be lying between Green Valley View and Pillar Rocks. It is better for a tourist to seek the help of localities while visiting the Devil’s Kitchen as they are fully aware of the place. It is a very good place to take pictures but due to the deep fall, many tourists hesitate to visit the place.

Silent Valley View

The Silent Valley view is another important and attractive place that should not be missed by any nature enthusiast. It is situated at a little distance from the Pillar Rock and is seen on the Berijam lake road and the breathtaking view of this valley will be soothing to the eyes.

Almost cheek by jowl with the Kodaikanal School is the Lutheran Church – a Gothic stone building with stained glass windows and modern paintings and batiks portraying scenes from the life of Christ. Nearby is an even more famous church – Christ the King Church – again, a very Gothic and solemn granite structure with stained glass windows. The names of the buildings in Kodaikanal are very evocative: ‘Loch End’ and ‘Mansarovar’ – these two houses by the lakeside bridge the time span from colonial times to the present. This is the first attraction that unfolds in front of a tourist on the Madurai – Kodaikanal road. The excess water in the Kodai Lake comes down as a fall at about 8 kms from Kodaikanal. It is like a pit stop for vehicles and tourists as there are shops selling fruits and other forest products.

Silver Cascade falls is 180 feet high and the frothy water coming down through piles of rocks will attract any person. The crystal clear water contains various minerals and taking a bath in this fall is very refreshing. Any nature lover can sit and enjoy the beauty of this falls for hours.

Kurinji Temple

Kurinji Andavar Temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga who is considered to be the God of the Hills as per Tamil literature. In Tamil, Kurinji means “hilly region and the word Andavar refers to ‘God’.

This temple is located at about 5 km from the bus station and the summer festival that is most anticipated event by the locals is celebrated in the month of May every year. Thousands of devotees visit this temple during the summer festival to seek the blessings of Lord Muruga.

One can get a good view of Vaigai dam and Palani hills from the hill on which the temple is located.

The Bear Shola falls is another favorite tourist spot in Kodaikanal and it is called so, because in earlier days bears used to come and drink water from this fall. It is one of the most ideal picnic spots in Kodaikanal town and is at a distance of about 2km from the lake and about 1.5km from the bus stand.

Trekking

Kodaikanal is a paradise for trekking lovers as it offers different trekking routes for the professional trekker to the novice trekker as well. Trekking routes with varying difficulty levels are there and a tourist can select the route according to the fitness, time factor and one’s trekking ability.

One of the toughest routes is from Periyakulam – Adukkam- Kodaikanal which has a trekking distance of about 18 kms which can be covered within 7 hours.

For the trekkers who prefer easy walk, the route from Kodaikanal to Berijam will be the suitable one and the trekker will be able to enjoy the green valleys and the mountain ranges surrounding Kodaikanal.

Internship In Ahmedabad At IIM

“Winter School 3.0” sounds boring, right??

What if I tell you Winter School 3.0 at one the best management institute in India,IIM-Ahmedabad?

Well it doesn’t end here!!

Learning new things on education and policies from the best professors of India, who are the official policy makers for the government of India. Am I grabbing your attention, “Very Well” There is lot more to this experience than only learning new things on policies. I got selected for Winter School 3.0 along with three other lovely people from my university. I was always involved into social welfare and wanted to bring out a change in the way people think, which would act as an impetus in the development of education system in India. I took an evening flight from Madurai. I had a changeover of flight in Chennai. Alas!! My flight got delayed by 2hrs. I reached Ahmedabad Airport at 10:30 pm and waited for two other participants at the airport, with whom I had to go to the IIM hostel. After one hour of conversations with them, I realized I had made friends who were like me and will certainly be there for lifetime. Excitement was at its peak when we were nearing IIM-A in Uber Cab and “there it comes”, yelled Yashwant, an IT student from IIIT, Hyderabad. A huge IIM Gate opened and we entered into a hub of professionals who had a different and an innovative thinking for everything. The way they interacted, the way they handled themselves in different situations certainly spoke and verified the fact that IIM-A certainly produces one of the best professionals in the industry. I was allotted a room in advance and the best part was, all three of us were roommates. We couldn’t be allotted IIM Hostels as they were under renovation. We were therefore, sent to the empty faculty houses. After reaching there, we found that we had 6 other roommates. We stood transfixed at the entrance wondering how will we manage to stay in a small flat along with 7 others. It was just two hours after which we were there, taking a forward stride together as we set off on IIM-A sightseeing journey at 2 am. It was indeed challenge walking in IIM campus where every time pigeon shit falls just like raindrops. We had the best tea of IIM from Ramesh Da, who happens to be the famous chai waala of IIM-A. As the sun rose and birds started to chirp, our red eyes forced us to sleep for one hour, well that was the time we had before our event began. It was the most difficult effort for all of us to wake up that day. Our event began sharp at 9 am. Initially we had thought that it is going to be nothing short of the bombardment of lectures but indeed it was a blessing. The professors who came to talk to us were so experienced and the way they interacted with us was so motivational that we didn’t even move an inch as we sat there, learning about the changes with need to be brought up in social policies which would benefit the poor and improve the literacy rate. Classes continued to 7 in the evening with different professors giving us an insight on the social changes and Education system of India. These classes along with many activities were conducted during this event for the next 5 days. After classes, each day, we used to go on the city exploring mission. This was certainly one of the best experience for me. There was a lot more to learn, other than the social arena. There were participants from different parts of India. Participants happened to be students, teachers, NGO heads with age group ranging from 20 to 60. Imagine the diversity in thinking! There were interactive sessions happening, where we clearly saw the innovative thoughts and ideas flowing by. I made many friends over there and learn many things about their cultures and professions. We were told to do a slum survey one day where we had to go to a slum where there were people, who were forcefully shifted from the river front 15 years ago, where their primary way of earning money was fishing. After being shifted they were also forced to work in a waste management industry where waste was burnt. This industry happened to be at a walking distance from the slum. The foul smell, adding to the fact that the water which was being supplied to the household was of terrible quality and also the sanitation system was poor, we were the only ones complaining about all these things. It seemed as if the voices had given up. After having a conversation with them, I realized that all they wanted was the support of the people and nothing else. They did not except monetary support or anything of its kind. They wanted us to support them and speak on their behalf for their lost rights. I met a 100-year-old lady, who danced with joy when I started to click her photo. I imagined, we, modern generation, expect more out of everything and there lies an old lady, who stays alone, being happy and contented with what she has. I literally froze when one lady, despite knowing that I had come for slum survey and couldn’t do much for them, came and told me, “Beta, tum ache se padai karna. Mera beta ko mein pada nhi pai. Padai aaj kal sabse jaada mehetvapurna he aur aap humare bete jaise ho aur mera aashirwad humesha aapke saath rahega”. The lady meant that she couldn’t teach her son due to financial and personal reasons but education is the most important thing and I am like her son and her blessing are always with me. That whole day, after returning from the slum, the lady’s words reverberated in my ears as I stood there helpless despite knowing their sufferings.

“BE HAPPY AND CONTENTED WITH WHAT YOU HAVE AND ALWAYS WISH GOOD FOR OTHERS” is what I learnt from a lady who knew much more than me and became my motivator. From making friends, to the wonderful lectures by the IIM Professors and a wonderful organizing committee consisting of IIM Students, From Travelling Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to having street food at Manek Chowk and the best delicacies at the mess of this eye-catching institute, From learning more about education systems and policies to get the basic life lessons from individuals , Every minute thing I did in IIM-A can be elaborated as I can proudly say I got an opportunity which was totally worth it and was the best experience I ever had where I learnt to become a responsible individual before anything else.Share such stories on eChutti travel blogs.
