Review: This is perhaps my favourite goreng pisang stall in Singapore, but I don’t visit it often because it’s so far away. The pisang is really goreng! The crust is crispy yet not too oily, and the banana is very sweet. I wanted to try the chempedak but it was not ready. It’s hard to find a good goreng pisang stall nowadays. Hope more people will support this stall so that they can keep running.

Culture- Houses, Families, and Food

A typical Sagi house is partially dug underground, with the floor usually about 2-3 feet deep. The skeleton is made of wood, with leather on the inside and over the skeleton. Dirt is then piled over the leather. 

In the center of the house, there is a hole in the roof for smoke to come out, as there is a central fire for heating and cooking. There are separate rooms, one for tools & clothes, one for food and water, and one for beds. Everyone who sleeps in the house sleeps in the same room, the beds being simple leather cushions filled with straw. (being birds, they sleep curled up and have no need nor concept of a pillow or headrest.) 

The Sagi language uses the Hawaiian kinship system, with your aunts and uncles being your parents. Not only do they not differentiate between parents and aunts/uncles, they also do not differentiate between in-laws and blood relatives, and the male moves to where the female lives. 

The first meal of the is eaten shortly after waking up, usually consisting of fruit, and. Sagi arto is a popular breakfast food similar to chempedak or jackfruit, usually eaten raw in the context of breakfast. It is the smallest meal of the day.

The second meal of the day is the largest, intended to fuel the rest of the day. A common second meal may include grouse or ptarmigan boiled in a pot alongside domesticated dandelion and unripe Sagi arto. This soup is often flavored with herbs. 

The final meal is usually eaten shortly before or after dark, before going to bed. It is a the smallest meal, as most of the time spent between the last and first meal is spent asleep. An example of a common final meal is tartberries and roasted Sagi arto seeds.

ROLE: TECHNICAL MANAGER/ STAGE MANAGER/ LIGHTING DESIGNER - GEORGETOWN FESTIVAL 2019, PENANG

SHOW: Kampong Chempedak

This is my 3rd time helping to stage Kampong Chempedak, and this time we are extremely honored to be part of the GEORGETOWN FESTIVAL 2019 in PENANG. As we have a very small team, most of us had to take on multiple roles. The main challenge for this production is to communicate all our technical requirement to the Penang team to prepare the stage for our arrival. We also manage to hire a props master and set builder to help us source for props and build our sets in Penang before we arrive. The show opened to a resounding success. Meeting fellow technical managers/production team and learning about the different working styles and environment we have was the most memorable experience of the whole festival. I am proud to say I have made great friends and I look forward to creating a more regional inclusive theatre culture.
