Unedited straight from my brain to yours. I’ve been wanting to do a battle of the bands au with almost know musical knowledge, and lately I’ve been hyperfocused on green haired Kaiba, so here’s a little piece of a puzzle.

Joey stopped short as he walked into the band room. Everyone except him and Tristan had already made it and were setting up. Yugi fiddled with his amp, Duke applied lipstick in their mirror, and sitting in the corner, setting up his keyboard, was Kaiba, who looked exactly the same except his hair was now bright fluorescent green.

“I’m hallucinating,” Joey said.

Tristan shoved past him into the room. “You’re not that stoned.”

He trailed behind him, ignoring his drum set up entirely. He beelined for Kaiba.

“Did Batman push you into a vat of chemicals?” he asked.

Kaiba’s head shot up, his blue eyes set in a glare sharp enough to make Joey flinch.

“You don’t get to say anything,” he snapped.

“It was my idea.” Duke snapped their compact shut. “We all scream rock ‘n roll now.”

Joey grinned. “You let Duke dye your hair?”

“I let Yugi dye my hair,” Kaiba said. “He has practice.”

“I think it looks great,” Yugi chirped, and Kaiba nodded his direction.

“It looks…” Joey started, but he couldn’t quite form the right words. It looked strange, like someone had photoshopped him in real life, but the bright shock of green made his eyes light up. It was the kind of green poison frogs wore to let predators know they were poisonous. It made him look like a piece of sour candy. It was the exact kind of color that made Joey’s mouth water.

He realized everyone was waiting for him to finish. He rolled his shoulders and said, “It looks cool.”

Kaiba blinked twice, and Joey turned away. Not that it helped. From his position behind everyone, Kaiba’s new green hair was a constant flash in the corner of his eye. The whole of practice he felt off. His hands slipped, he missed the beat, and he couldn’t stop looking. This was Duke’s fault, and Yugi, the traitor, who’d set out to make Kaiba cool and inexplicably succeeded.

They took a break to recoup. Tristan talked about how the sound was coming together while Duke and Yugi nodded along. Joey realized he was staring again when Kaiba looked at him. A storm cloud shrouded his forehead. It remained for the rest of practice, and he was the first out the door when the time came. Joey was biting his lip as the others packed up. Tristan knocked him on the shoulder.

“You okay, man?” he said. “You’re a space case today.”

“Yeah.” Joey hitched his bag up on his shoulder. “Kaiba looks different, huh.”

Tristan narrowed his eyes at him. His hand clamped tightly on Joey’s shoulder. “Don’t do anything stupid.”

“What?” Joey looked up at him innocently. “I’m not doing anything.”

“You’re thinking.” Tristan tapped his own forehead. “And that’s what you do before you do something dumb, like, I dunno, mess with the dynamic of the band. We just got everyone to act normal with each other. No more fights, no more hurt feelings. You don’t wanna screw that up.”

“I would never,” Joey said solemnly. “I swear.”

Tristan held him a moment longer before shaking his head. “Stop while you’re ahead.”

“I’m not doing anything,” Joey said. “I’ll meet you by your bike, okay?”

“What for? I’m right here.”

“I’ll meet you,” he repeated and headed for the door. “Don’t stress yourself out.”

“Twenty minutes!” Tristan shouted after him. “And I’m leaving your ass behind!”

The halls of Domino high were stone blocks, which made Kaiba easy to find before he’d left the building. His stupid driver would pick him up to go to cotillion or something like that. He could afford, just once, to be a little late. Joey ducked around him, putting himself directly in his path.

“Hey,” he said.

“What is your problem,” Kaiba snapped. “Ever since you walked in you’ve been acting strange, which is saying something for you. My hair really bothers you that much?”

“No,” Joey said. “Yes.”

“Well good news, I’m dying it back tonight.” He ran a hand through the offending green strands. “I’ve been stared at all day and I won’t be your freak show. I should’ve never listened to Duke. The last thing I need is deadbeats like you laughing behind my back.”

“Yeah, okay,” Joey said. “Do you wanna make out?”

Kaiba’s mouth opened, and then snapped shut. His eyes went wide. After a few seconds, he said, “What?”

“Just, like, before you change it back.” Joey reached up, pulling a strand of green hair forward. “I know you got your little puppy dog crush on Duke but I think you might be down. It can be a real quick one. You got places to be.”

Kaiba appeared to be recalculating. He blinked a few more times and repeated, “What?”

“I like the hair,” Joey said, and he rolled the hair between his fingers as he glanced up. “You wanna make out or what?”

“I–” Kaiba opened and closed his mouth again. “Is that the only reason why?”

“No.” Joey pushed his hand through his hair, twining the strands between his fingers and scratching the nape of his neck. “No, I think you’re funny sometimes and you got legs for days. Also you’re mean, which I’m kinda into. If you don’t say yes soon then I gotta assume you’re not interested.”

“I’m interested,” Kaiba blurted out, and his whole face went red, which was really fascinating with the green hair. “I just… didn’t expect you to be.”

“Don’t be too flattered,” Joey said. “I got low standards and get bored really easily. Anyway tomorrow your hair will go back to normal and we don’t have to do anything else. So is that a yes? Cause there’s a supply closet—”

Kaiba’s lips crashed down on his without a second thought. It was not a shy kiss, but a hungry and hormonal one. Joey laughed and guided him to fit against his mouth, and the two made out in the school hallway where anyone could walk by.

Joey was only five minutes late to meeting Tristan. He didn’t even leave him behind.

And really that should’ve been the end of it. A total one time thing. Kaiba would go back to being stuck up rich boy with marginal talents and mediocre fashion sense, and instead, when Joey and Tristan walked into the band room, there he was with a shock of green hair.

Joey grinned when he saw him. Kaiba looked down as his face bloomed red. Maybe there was more to this one time thing after all.

The “K2 Granite”

I’ve been writing here for years and honestly, this might be the first time I’ve known so little about a rock I’m showing you. I don’t know how old this rock is or exactly where it comes from, but this is an amazing rock. I just wrote a thousand words on it. Just look at it – the rock has freaking blue dots on it!

This rock, especially in polished cabochon forms, has been appearing at mineral and rock shows for sale for several years. It gets sold under the names “K2 Granite” or “K2 Jasper”, but it’s definitely not Jasper (a type of quartz/chalcedony). Fascinatingly, no one has ever found the actual outcrop that it comes from. The best descriptions suggest that it has been hand quarried, literally picked up and carried out of the area of northern Pakistan near the mountain known as K2 or Mount Godwin-Austen, the 2nd highest peak above sea level on the planet Earth. Since no one has reported an official outcrop where these stones come from, it is possible that the stones are found in a moraine along the edge of one of the glaciers in this area. These glaciers carry ice and rock tens of kilometers through the range; the actual outcrop could be anywhere along that stretch and might even be buried beneath the ice.

When I saw a picture of this stone, I started googling for published papers on it and found…none. I searched for other things and found articles that repeated the basic description of it – found near K2, gemstone, the blue color looks like the mineral azurite and the greenish specks around it look like the mineral malachite, polishes readily, acts like a rock, and it seems like the blue color is inherent to the stone rather than a dye, but what the heck is it?

Finally, I tracked down a discussion forum at Mindat.org, cited below, where some geoscientists had (in their spare time and at their own expense) pulled apart a few of these stones and analyzed the mineralogy and texture. Here’s what they were able to get.

The rocks appear to be metamorphic, with a weak foliation. The bulk mineralogy looks a lot like an igneous rock, something between a granite and a tonalite, dominated by the mineral plagioclase but with a fair amount of potassic feldspar in the rock, in addition to mica minerals such as biotite. The blue material is a real mineral, not a chemical dye added later, and it really is the copper carbonate azurite, which produces brilliant blue crystals when it is present – the presence of that mineral was confirmed by X-ray analyses, the best way to confirm mineral ID. However, the blue color isn’t centimeter-sized grains of the azurite, the azurite is found as tiny inclusions in the plagioclase feldspar. The azurite creates centimeter-sized blue spots by existing as tiny grains in that volume of feldspar. Furthermore, the azurite is associated with tiny flakes of metallic copper, suggesting how this rock formed.

Plagioclase sometimes has copper inside it; the copper dissolves at high temperatures then separates as the plagioclase cools down, occasionally forming a gemstone called a sunstone (https://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1r-65Bl). Since plagioclase doesn’t have a strong color, when the copper carbonate mineral azurite is present, it dominates the color of the grains and turns everything that brilliant blue color. The azurite is also associated with a bit of sulfur, which suggests that the sequence forming the blue color in this rock was: 1. Plagioclase formed with copper dissolved inside it at high temperatures 2. As the plagioclase slowly cooled, the copper exsolved into a separate, metal phase 3. Carbonate rich fluids worked their way through the rock along grain boundaries and fractures. These fluids carried other elements, probably including water and sulfur. 4. The carbonate chemically reacted with some of the copper, producing azurite within the plagioclase or on grain boundaries. This reaction left behind a trace of the sulfur.

One scientist who looked at this rock under thin section described it as being weakly foliated; a weak foliation but a metamorphic rock. The area around K2 contains a number of rocks this could possibly be related to, both igneous and metamorphic.

120 million years ago, some of the rocks near K2 were forming as part of a volcanic arc. The oceanic plate India was riding on was moving north, subducting beneath Asia and forming volcanoes. This subduction formed batholiths; huge bodies of igneous rock, and it lasted tens of millions of years. Some of these batholiths would have produced things resembling pegmatites – rich in volatile elements and sometimes metal elements. Some of the copper could have been residing here.

Sometime between 40 and 60 million years ago, India ran into Asia. When these continents collided, many of the igneous plutons that are today near K2 were thrust deep into the crust. At this point, they were heated again and metamorphosed, altering and foliating the rocks. This could be one of the places where these rocks formed; start off with one of those pegmatites that formed earlier, send those deep into the crust, metamorphose them, and we might have a place where copper-bearing plagioclase grains could form.

However, it’s not the only place this could have formed. When these rocks were pushed downwards into the crust, some of them started melting and formed new igneous rocks. Some of these igneous rocks are as young as 20 million years old, and some of them never rose up all the way to the surface, which means they formed at high enough pressures to develop weak foliations. Igneous rocks that form in continental collisions can be really, really weird – they have chemistries rich in elements like sodium, potassium, and rare earth elements. Copper might also get enriched there, along with a few other metallic elements.

However these rocks formed, finally, they moved up to the surface, during which time the copper exsolved and was altered into azurite.

Without an age date on a rock like this, we can’t know if it formed before or after the Himalayan orogeny started. In either case, it probably was foliated while it was tens of kilometers deep in the Himalayan crust. It was then thrust up to the surface along the huge thrust faults that helped form K2.

Somewhere near K2, there is a rock out there with little blue measles of azurite. I would really like to know where this rock came from. Honestly, with enough money to pay for it, someone could probably put a chunk of this stuff into an isotope analyzer, get an age for it, and that might actually help us figure out where it came from. I’m wondering if anyone has put together a funding proposal to do an age date on this stuff.

One of the oldest, hardiest and most widespread living organisms, first appearing approximately 400 million years ago, lichens have at least 13,000 identified species worldwide. This photo, taken near Rhinebeck, New York on December 24, 2017, shows two of the three main categories of lichen: crustose, flat, two-dimensional, firmly attached and crust-like; and foliose, leaf-like with distinct upper and lower leafy surfaces. The other group, fruticose (not shown in this photo), is tube-like with branched stems. Note that the dark green moss in the photo is a completely different species.

Lichen presents a symbiotic partnership between two or more dissimilar organisms, creating a vegetative body called a thallus. About 80 percent of the lichen is composed of fungus, which provides physical structure, and absorbs moisture and minerals. The other life forms of green algae and/or cyanobacteria provide food to the thalli through photosynthesis.

Growing best in areas with light, moisture and moderate temperatures, lichens can be found on the surfaces of rocks, trees and soil, and also on manmade wooden, stone or metal structures. Lichens promote both physical and chemical weathering of rock, but are non-parasitic and so will not harm healthy trees.

Berberine is a chemical compound that has been discovered in multiple medicinal plants. Notably, it's found in the gorgeous berberis vulgaris shrub, commonly known as "barberry." Berberine has been used for thousands of years in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. And it has even been used, in areas like India, to dye wool and similar products.

It was not until 1917, in North America, that berberine was first isolated from plants. Today, the extract is a popular dietary supplement with many potential health benefits [1, 2]. And, more importantly, accumulating research supports the idea that berberine is a geroprotector [3], which may even extend maximum lifespan.

Before reading on, let me be clear. I'm not a medical doctor. Berberine is considered a dietary supplement. Although I'll mention some research related to disease, I don't recommend berberine as a treatment for any disease. And you should always get the advice of your primary care physician before taking supplements.

Metabolic Pathways

Intracellularly, berberine binds to many molecular targets. So there's still a lot more research to do, if we want to figure out all of the actions of berberine in our bodies [4].

Berberine is most well known for activating AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) [5]. This is a well-studied enzyme that likely plays a role in metabolic pathways related to longevity.

AMPK is also activated by metformin [6], a pharmaceutical drug. Berberine has been compared to and combined with metformin. And the results are impressive [7].

Berberine also influences PCSK9 (Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) [8]. This is an enzyme that influences cholesterol levels.

Promising Systemic Health Effects

One method to determine if a treatment has life extension potential, is to observe its effects in context of multiple body systems and functions. If treatments are helpful across contexts, it's possible that the treatment promotes systemic regeneration. And if enough systemic regeneration occurs, life extension will likely occur.

Aging is a systemic problem, which makes it particularly difficult to combat [9]. Using one treatment for a localized effect isn't enough. Maintaining the healthy function of one body system or function just means that thousands of others are ignored. So a system approach is essential to achieving life extension goals.

Geroprotectors are treatments that are well known for having system-wide effects. They are associated with impressive lists of animal and human trials that evidence beneficial effects on multiple body systems and functions.

For example, quickly type "berberine" into WebMD. They provide you with information about berberine's multifaceted health effects. They also notify you that there still needs to be more research. And that makes sense because preventing aging and extending lifespan will require a systemic approach.

Reputable articles published at places like PubMed, HealthLine, and others, provide a greater breadth of research. And they reveal the potential that geroprotectors like berberine have for systemic regeneration.

To get a quick appreciation for this, type "berberine" into clinicaltrials.gov. You will see 64 studies in total and 32 completed studies. Now look at the indications. You will see that they're related to many different body systems and functions.

Literature is accumulating in relation to berberine's ability to support healthy cholesterol and heart function, and decrease high blood pressure. A review [12], meta-analysis [13], and study [14] show that berberine is associated with multiple cardiovascular health benefits across both non-human animals and humans.

One review of about a dozen clinical studies indicates that berberine could lower total cholesterol 0.61 mmol, lower LDL cholesterol by 0.65 mmol, lower blood triglycerides by 0.50 mmol/L, and raise HDL cholesterol by 0.05 mmol/L. Impressively, it could also lower apolipoprotein B by 13 to 15 percent [11, 15]. More research is needed to determine how berberine affects heart disease.

Cautiously, I'll mention that there are in vitro and animal studies indicating that berberine may have reduced the spread of cancer in some cases [19, 20]. One review notes that berberine has “clear inhibitory effects” on colorectal cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, and cervical cancer [21]. More research is needed to determine how berberine affects cancer.

Diabetes is a highly systemic disease. Exploring anti-diabetic potential, double-blind studies of berberine have shown that it may improve insulin sensitivity and support healthy blood sugar levels. A meta-analysis observes that berberine has lowered blood sugar more than placebo [22]. For example, in a study of 116 diabetic patients, their fasting blood sugar decreased by 20%, and their hemoglobin A1c decreased by 12% [23].

Studies related to diabetes and berberine have also shown that berberine may promote weight loss. A clinical study review observed that berberine reduces weight in human subjects over a 3-month period [24]. More research is needed to determine how berberine affects type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Our nervous system is an unparalleled complex system, capable of the most beautiful and awesome functions. Berberine seems to be a promising candidate to support healthy nerve function. There are many rat and human studies that associate enhanced mood with berberine [25-28]. And berberine seems to have multiple protective effects related to the brain [25].

There's research indicating that berberine has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects [16-18]. And its systemic benefits may also reach the liver [30], ovaries [29], the immune system [31], and many other body organs and functions.

Evidence that Berberine Extends Life

Berberine has extended the lifespan of many different model organisms [34, 33]. In one study, berberine was fed to mice every day. And it extended their lifespan on average by 16%.

A 16% increase in lifespan for humans would mean that we would live a little longer than 90 years, as easily as we live up to 80 years today. But we’d probably be in better health than today’s 80-year-olds because many aspects of the aging process may also be significantly slowed or reversed.

What next? We observe life extension in model organisms. And we observe potential for systemic regeneration in humans and animals. The next step should be a direct test of how berberine affects aging in humans, perhaps replicating the TAME study [10].

Side Effects and Safe Dosage

While researching berberine, you may notice that popular articles have conflicting views of its potential side effects. The primary scientific literature, on the other hand, does not seem to be as controversial. Common side effects include cramping, diarrhea, flatulence, constipation, and stomach pain. Other than that, berberine appears to have an excellent safety profile [7].

Most human studies administer berberine to subjects at a high dose between 1000 and 1500 mg/day. Because our understanding of berberine is still improving, a good approach may be to talk to your doctor about a low dose of berberine.
