Rinne: (So my next job is in an hour... I wanna play pachinko, but guess I'll only end up gettin’ there and comin' right back.) (And there's no point in goin' to Cinnamon either as Niki isn't there.) (Well, it seems I have no choice but to stay here and kill time. If only something could keep me from gettin' bored...) (...Oh.) Hey, Hiyori-chan♪ What a coincidence, nice to see you. For some reason, your mere presence is like a good omen. As if I'm gettin' an "fine weather" blessing...♪

Hiyori: Rinne-senpai, I know you're tearfully happy to see me, but now it's terrible weather…

Rinne: Hm? What's the matter? You don't look well. Did you caught a cold or somethin'?

Hiyori: I wanted to pick up some snacks for a light meal, but the quiche I was looking for was out of stock. Even though I was the one who wrote the letter asking them to add quiche to their repertoire, me not getting it in the end is simply unforgivable!

Rinne: Ehh, so your favorite food is tissues? Are you a goat eatin' paper?♪ Come on, Hiyori-chan, say maa maa...☆

Hiyori: I won't! And I'm not a goat! I'm not in the mood to be teased, why do you keep messing with me?

Rinne: But isn't it natural to greet acquaintances when you meet them in your free time? Why don't you get along with me since we're roommates? Gyahaha☆

Hiyori: Roommates, huh... Then you should ask Kanata-kun to keep you company. He'll bring you luck too, though not as much as me.

Rinne: What do you mean?

Hiyori: It's just a rumor. When I was still at Yumenosaki, I've heard that some people worship him, believing that he can make any wish come true for them.

Rinne: Any, huh? Gyahaha, that definitely isn’t true then. There's no way he could be a god, is there?

Hiyori: Fufun. Whether you believe me or not is up to you, Rinne-senpai.

<6 hours later>

Rinne: (Phew, all done. Good job, me~) (Now I'll drop my stuff off here and leave. My beloved gambling is waitin' for meee~♪) (There's a new pachinko machine, so should I try that first?~) (...Hm?)

Kanata: (Sleeping sounds)

Rinne: (So Kanacchi's back too. I didn't notice him at all.) (He looks so peaceful sleepin'. Is he havin' a good dream?) ... ("Make any wish come true", huh...) (I know it's just a baseless rumour, but... Guess it can’t hurt to try—) (In a low voice) May I win big! (Aight, I'm off now♪)

Niki: Thanks for waiting~ Here are your two daily special sets~

HiMERU: Thank you.

Kohaku: ...Hey, Niki-han. I wanna ask you somethin'.

HiMERU: Oukawa.

Kohaku: But HiMERU-han, you're curious too, right? If we can't get anywhere on our own, then let's bring in Niki-han. Look... See Rinne-han sittin' at the counter?

Rinne: ......... ...(Sigh)

Kohaku: He's been lost in thought like that for quite a long time now. Did somethin' happen? Maybe he ate somethin' strange?

Niki: Eh!? Please don't suspect our food! But it's really weird that he didn't try to pester me. Well, now that I think about it, he sure looks different from usual~

HiMERU: So in other words, you don't know anything either.

Kohaku: HiMERU-han, where are you goin'?

HiMERU: To ask him directly. Since we don't know the situation, our discussion is just a waste of time. Amagi, can I have a minute?

Rinne: ...Hey, Merumeru. Do you believe in God?

HiMERU: ...What.

Kohaku: Oh no, Rinne-han's snapped!

Niki: Uwah, it's quite troublesome. Who can fix him then? Little brother-san?

Rinne: Nah, I'm totally fine. I don't know how it works, but lately I've been winnin' big at pachinko every time I pray to my roommate, Kanacchi. I suspected it was just a dubious rumour, but turns out he might really be a god of gambling... I haveta cherish this bond♪ Gyahahaha!

Hiyori: I'm home! If there's anyone here, greet me with open arms!

Kanata: Welcome back, "Ohisama"-san.

Hiyori: Kanata-kun, what's the matter? Even though I'm back, you're in such a bad mood!

Kanata: No, I'm "fine". Just a little "bewildered". Lately, "Chief"-san has been "pampering" me so strangely often.

Hiyori: Pampering?

Kanata: Yes. Like giving me a "vinyl pool" or trying to take me to a "fish" restaurant. And now I'm stumped as I don't understand the "intention" behind it.

Hiyori: Ah, I think I might have an idea. Let me tell you.

Hiyori: ––So it looks like his gambling luck increases in proportion to how much attention he pays to you. And now he seems to be completely devoted to the "god of gambling".

Kanata: Uu... That's why he's been "cozying up" to me... I don't like to feel used at all…

Rinne: I'm home~...

Kanata: Oh, "Chief"-san. We need to talk. I'm not a "god of gambling", you know!

Rinne: Eh... Haha–– So you found out about my prayers? Wish I had known this sooner. I lost big just now. (Sigh)... It really was too good to be true after all…

Hiyori: No sighs in front of me! If not Kanata-kun, you can worship me! If you treat the one of "Eden", named after the paradise ruled by the omniscient and omnipotent God, respectfully enough, you will surely earn His favor!

Rinne: Oh nooo~ Are you imposin' a religion on me~? What should Rinne-kun dooo~♪

Hiyori: It's worth a try! You'll have a bronze statue of me, so you can worship me everyday!

Rinne: Hehe~ Hiyori-sama~☆

Hiyori: Hmph, I don't like the way you say it! Show me more seriousness, will you!

I had never even heard of this magician woman before you started making art of her but I am oddly invested in your art of this funky little woman, she seems silly and goofy

no i know right. i had the same experience i was like "who the hell is this magician woman theyve got standing next to the justice league" and my partner was like oh Zatanna Zatara? everybody knows her (and she's IN the justice league)

shook me to my core. there was a sillygoofy magician the whole time i had never once heard of... now i'm so invested in her goofy shit. i'm glad my art is becoming a secondary source of infection ❤

optional: here's some things ive learned over the past 3 months

she was introduced as a weirdo in 1964. she's been weird and strange for 59 years and counting! next year will be her 60th anniversary #Hag

her whole gimmick is that she's a famous stage magician who also happens to be a real magician, which i think is very good

i think she joined the justice league in like 1978 or smthg shes Been Around

before i had the magician disease: no matter how much someone tried to explain her character to me, i couldn't grasp her. and now that i have first-hand magician disease: no matter how much i try to explain her to my partner, they can't grasp her. i think there's something aberrant about her. like she demands hands-on interaction to be truly perceived. but watch out for the spores

for a while she used to drag her Normal Manager around for magic adventures. his name was Jeff and i suppose he just took the constant near-death peril as part of the "managing a stage magician" job

some website once ranked her among the top 5 sexiest comic women, making her the highest-ranking DC character on the list #LetsGo #MagicianSweep

she's quite beloved and a pretty consistent feature but she doesn't get a ton of solo stuff 😔✌ but theyre reprinting her comic from 2010 next year woohoo happy 60th bitch

they forgot to really give her a power ceiling and her magic can pretty much do anything she can think of, so she's a consistent pain in DC's neck whenever she has to intersect with other characters and Big Serious Plots—but it's not like they can just leave her on the shelf entirely either

(i think powerscaling is fake & that "who would win a fight between x and y" is a fake question that depends on so much more than hard numbers, especially in a medium like comics. but i also think DC itself quite visibly feels a pressure to manage her + i think this quirk about her is extremely funny and i LOVE to see them try so hard to nerf their pesky magician)

in 2004 they made her part of a The Gang Commits Atrocities plot without really justifying Why she would do all that, and her next several years are Fascinating to watch as writers try to come up with various ways to make new sense of her character in light of it. until the whole dc comics continuity was wiped and relaunched in 2011, solving the problem by erasing the whole thing from canon (along with everything else)

the real crime of that whole incident? the '04 comic that started it wasn't even very good

she's listed on the DC Wiki category page for "Eldritch Blast"

currently serving time in the Justice League Dark branch department, which is where we keep all the weird grimy magic stuff so it doesn't get all over everything

for a second and not too long ago, the big leaguers exploded and died for a bit (long story also they got better) including zee. and they put a gigantic scary moving painting of her in the basement as a memorial. i think this is exactly what she would have wanted to be honest

they should put her in the rwby crossovers more. she was in dc/rwby for a second but i want her in the damn movies. i think it'd be funny

Haikyuu Book Club - Week 7: 323-325

1. pacing

i loved the pacing in chapter 323. everything was happening so fast, it was unclear where a play began or what the teams were planning on doing - we mostly got panels of spikes and blocks and digs. we didn't get any explanation of the characters' thoughts or elaborate panels of run-ups.

on one hand, it makes the pacing seem more like that of an actual game - if you're watching a volleyball match, it actually is that fast.

on the other, it serves to increase tension. everything is happening so quickly, there is just no time to think. the characters are just acting on instinct, points are racking up without anyone noticing because they're just so focused on playing. plus, they said that "karasuno is getting faster and faster" - and i love that the writing (the artwork?) is supporting this.

It's no wonder hinata didn't realize they had won. to him, all that matters is playing, playing with his team and against kenma and nekoma. it doesn't even occur to him that the game could end. i also love kageyama's little comment.

2. kenma my beloved having fun <33

hinata was the first character we met who wanted nothing more than to stay on the court and keep playing. it's never been about winning for the sake of winning - hinata wants to win because it's necessary to keep playing. and now, kenma feels the same way about volleyball. i know i have talked about this every week so far, but it's just so beautiful to me.

not only did kenma enjoy this game, he is actually looking forward to playing again. and look at that bright smile hinata gives him. i love them so so much

it's also quite funny to see how surprised everyone is at kenma getting into the game and trying. look at their shocked faces

3. compositon

once again we had some wonderful pages. look at kageyama in this one. wow.

look how beautiful the transition is. the ball drops from the top panel right onto yaku's arms.

and of course, the parallels. do i even need to say anything

4. they are FRIENDS

kuroo and daichi <33 they're rivals, yes, and they kind of hate each other because they're so aggravating to play against, but they are also friends and playing against with the other is fun!! daichi ducking under the net to hug him instead of just shaking his hand like he should is such a sweet gesture. look at them. my heart

this spread. look at them. they've connected. they've created bonds.

nekoma third years.

5. haikyuu doing the unexpected

i can't think of any other manga that would end such an important game like this. there is no grand finale to this incredibly important game. there isn't even an elaborate build-up. the game moves incredibly quickly, and then it just ends because of such an unlucky accident. even in haikyuu, a lot of the important games kept going on and the players had to come up with more and more impressive moves (think karasuno vs seijoh or karasuno vs shiratorizawa). but this game ended because kenma's hands got slippery with sweat.

i think this is one of haikyuu's strengths. it's realistic. there are these little things that aren't grand or exciting, but that just make the characters seem much more human. more tangible.

i also like the focus on hinata and kuroo, because those two are the most important players on the court to kenma. those two have the most important bonds with him.

6. lev appreciation time

lev did so well in this match! and look how proud everyone is of him!! i already talked about this in my reply to @sugaaz 's post but just, !!!! he has worked hard and it shows!!
