One Piece Reread - Ch. 148

This panel will never fail to give me chills. And Luffy's speech surrounding this panel regarding the meaning (his meaning) of a pirate flag, and how a person should never fly one lightly, or as a joke, echoing Hiriluk's view of pirate flags is so good.

It is not a traditional view of pirates or of pirate flags, but that is what is so good about it. For Luffy (and Hiriluk) to fly a pirate flag is to place the ultimate amount of faith into ones dreams and desires. It is a sign of grit and determination to do whatever necessary to pursue that dream, even if it means death. It is simultaneously idealistic AND realistic. A declaration of unwavering faith in a dream and an acknowledgement that the pursuit of said dream can lead to death.

And that idea is so thematically relevant to Chopper, a character who's dream is to find a cure to every disease, but who knows that the only way to do that his through hard work and constant learning. HE has to become the cure, one will not just fall into his lap.

God the themes in this arc are so GOOD, I wish more people would talk about them.
