I was gifted tickets for the Ocean at the End of the Lane play by my thoughtful partner, and promptly decided I was going to make the most of it organizing my very own Neil Gaiman Tour of London. I’ve been wanting to visit some of the magnificent sevens for ages - so it was two birds with one headstone, really. 

It first took a little bit of poking around Kensal Green cemetery to find the JF Huth mausoleum, where the iconic picture with Terry and Neil was taken - its carvings used for the book and show. Lots of stone angels in that graveyard, but also, charmingly, some snakes. If you ever want to find the mausoleum.

Then we payed our respects to Soho and Berwick Street staring both in Good Omens (kind of) and Neverwhere, before heading to the theater. The play was, needless to say, utterly beautiful. As were the adaptation choices : the books the boy reads - echoes of his own story, how they took the fantastic flea to life, how they made the father-son relationship even more central to the narrative. 

Under an unlikely bright november sun (vampires sadly weren’t seen), we went to both sides of Highgate cemetery, because of the Graveyard Book : "The graveyard in The Graveyard Book was built up equally from Highgate Cemetery West, Abney Park in Stoke Newington, and a little bit from Glasgow Necropolis." NG.

And finally we went to Battersea to have a sandwich in front of the iconic Good Omens bandstand. From an old stone bridge we watched the night turns the Thames black, without being eaten by the darkness ourselves - as it apparently only happens in the London Below. We walked almost 13 km that day, or more accurately, 8 miles. 

I’ve crossed the channel countless times and I will keep on doing it because there’s still so much to discover in this huge, old, wonderful city.

Sunday 12th March 2023

I think the Hotel Mercure took pity on us because of our desperately early flight this morning and kindly gave us some take out breakfast. Just a meager repast but welcome nonetheless. Had we been partaking in the restaurant we would have cleaned them out; the works and some put by for luncheon. Still it was a very adequate pot of yogurt, cereal and fruit, fruit juice and pastry selection. Just what was needed having been dragged out of sleep at 5.40am. We trundled the 5 minute walk to Central and caught the 6.31 Airtrain to Brisbane Domestic Airport in a still half dazed state; the heavy rain overnight having abated. A mere 1 hour 10 minute flight to Sydney was easy to take as punishment and we were ready for the very last section of our time here in this wonderful country.

Our home for the next 3 nights is in Darling Harbour and within the sound of the Anzac Bridge so very central and convenient for the City. The accommodation is in the form of a suite with kitchenette, lounge area and bedroom so pretty comfortable. The first thing to do after checking in was to walk over to the SOH, passing Queen Mary 2 in Circular Quay and book the last opportunity we shall have this time around to visit this iconic place again. With no opera on this week we have booked to see the work of the immortal bard, Macbeth on Wednesday evening in the Playhouse which one of the three theatres in the SOH. Being an Australian production is it possible that when the line 'Is this a dagger I see before me' someone might say 'that's not a dagger, THIS is a dagger!' Perhaps. We are looking forward to it and the very next day we travel home to blighty.

After booking the Opera House, we moved on to the Art Gallery of NSW. We like this place and were keen to see some more of its modern art although it is sometimes hard to quite catch the message the artist is intent to convey. Still enjoyable though. We walked back through the park, bought a rubbery chicken and retired immediately.

Landmark Edition: N Seoul Tower

The N Seoul Tower is a communication and observation tower located on the top of the Namsan Mountain in central Seoul. It’s 236 meters tall, and the second highest point in Seoul. It offers unobstructed views of the entire city, and is one of its most iconic structures, serving as a backdrop in countless photos, music videos, and Kdramas.

The tower construction began in 1969 and was completed in 1971. According to Wikipedia, the name was changed from Seoul Tower to N Seoul Tower in 2005, with the N standing for “Namsan”, “New”, and “Nature”.

Tower Observatory

The observatory offers complete 360 views of the city through floor to ceiling windows. On the very top most floor, the windows indicate which major world city you are facing at any one time. 

The observatory is open until 11pm Sunday to Friday, and midnight on Saturday. Access to the observatory part of the tower does cost money, approximately 10,000 KRW for adults ($11 AUD / $7.30 US).

Namsan Cable Car

Constructed in 1962, the cable car is the easiest way to get to the N Seoul Tower without trekking up the steep, difficult mountain.

Namsan Tower Padlocks

When first arriving at the base of the tower, there are thousands of “padlocks of love” that couples have locked in the hopes of bringing good luck to their union. It can also be used to symbolise love and unity amongst friends and family! N Seoul Tower is one of approximately 40 such “padlocks of love” locations across the globe.
