fun dyslexic moment today: tried to spell ‘keeper’ as ‘ceaper’ ??? then when I tried to fix it I wrote ‘keaper’ twice again instead.

I really wonder how I made it to 16 without being diagnosed or noticing at all

15 things to now before visiting Cuba

So you’ve booked your tickets to Cuba are all ready to dance salsa, drink mojitos and smoke some cigars. Cuba is quite unlike any other country in this world. Its tumultuous and controversial history is also what draws so many tourists to its shores every year. Travelling Cuba takes you back in time to the 1950s. From horse-drawn carriages as taxis to the pre-paid internet scratch cards you have to use to get online, Cuba is definitely an experience.

But before you leave, make sure you know these 13 things which will help make your adventure in Cuba much more memorable!

Check that your flight ticket includes your Cuban tourist visa. Flights from Canada and Mexico usually include them with your ticket price.

Bring enough cash for your trip as ATMs do not always work. (and there’s always a long line). Cash is also preferred over credit cards.

EUR and CAD are better currencies to bring than USD (which incurs an extra 10% commission when exchanging money in Cuba).

When leaving the country, make sure you convert all your money (most commonly to USD, no extra commission charge for departure) as it is impossible to convert CUCs outside of Cuba

Be aware of the difference between the 2 Cuban currencies (CUCs and CUPs). The CUP is 25 times less than the CUC (1 CUC = 1 USD).

Print all travel documents and confirmations before you enter the country. Screen shots and E-tickets are not usually accepted.

Accommodation at Casa particulars (local homes) is much cheaper than hotels.

Do most of your research before you arrive as Wi-Fi is scarce.

MAPS.ME is the best offline map to use in Cuba. Download the app and the map of Cuba before arrival.

Taking collectivos (shared taxis) is often ceaper than taking the bus (Viazul) if you have a party of 2-4.

Cuba is actually incredibly safe (even for solo female travellers) and has a very low crime rate.

Bring some hot sauce if you can’t live without spicy food. Food in Cuba is a little bland compared to the rest of the world but hey, clean-eating FTW!

Learning a few conversational Spanish phrases goes a long way.

Remember to bargain for everything (especially taxis and souvenirs!)

Make sure you have Travel Insurance. They sometimes check for proof upon arrival and will make you buy it if you can’t produce the appropriate paperwork.
