Duty (update!)
Tumblr media
A long overdue spring visit to Nampara!
Demelza has some private musings, finds herself with an unusual problem (a surfeit of brisket), and hosts a tea party that doesn't quite go off as planned.
Read Chapter 48 ("Research") here.
Read Chapter 49 ("Every Uneventful Day") here.
Read Chapter 50 ("Bout") here.
Sorry for the delay between postings. Two more chapters should be up soon! Thanks for following this little tale!

Wait wait Molly are you a Poldark fan? How did we not know this!!! Love Poldark but agree the show as much better before they started inventing wildly.
I am a Poldark fan, yes. I think Winston Graham's series was one of the first bits of historical fiction I ever read actually and they're great books. There's so much to the characters that the show failed to grasp. Season one and two are some of the most faithful TV adaptations I've ever seen. And then we got to season 3 and just started???? Doing whatever we wanted????
Insane behaviour given that The Black Moon is one of the best books of the series.
Even with the Caroline and Dwight Plot they fucked it up?
The whole point of Caroline's arc in that book is she has to wait. She's used to getting everything she wants, whenever she wants it, but she has to wait for Dwight to come home from the war. She has no right to any information because she's not his wife and she Has to invest her time, and the growth she gets through that when he's finally home is so beautiful. And they cut it all off in the first episode.

Fic title ask:
By a Candle’s Light
A Friendly Observation
Thank you! 😘
@dreamstone28737 Thanks so much! Let's see...
“By a Candle’s Light” In this one, Demelza’s mind wanders as she waits alone for Ross’s return from yet another risky encounter with Trencrom.
Snippet: He had told her to pull the curtains, to turn a blind eye, but she would do no such thing. Someone had to be a beacon in the tempest Ross had brought upon himself. She’d already checked on Jeremy asleep in his cot, his hands curled in fists as he grabbed at unseen things in his dreams.
And just what is he wanting? she’d wondered. Despite their current circumstances, whatever the little boy desired now, he usually got. Something sweet, a tug at Garrick’s fur, a cuddle from his mama. And from his papa. It wouldn't be long before his wants would be more complicated--and unmet.
The candle she’d lit some time ago hissed and reminded her how quiet the house could be at night without Ross’s heavy feet. She thought to get up and attend to the greasy sputter left on the table but something kept her planted on her bench by the window.
It was the sudden memory of another night, another candle, years before. Up in his bedchamber, Ross had lit a second candle when the first had gone out. At first it had only been her bare skin that was illuminated but when he removed his own shirt and then his trousers, she understood what would happen next.
--AND--
“A Friendly Observation” This one takes place in the weeks after the New Year 1994, when university mates Caroline and Ross meet in a pub to catch up.
Snippet:
“Caroline, are you seriously ignoring my question?” Ross smiled and lit a cigarette. He waited until he had her attention before he exhaled slowly and dramatically. A couple seated nearby looked over with a sneer.
“My goodness, it is the smoking section,” Caroline said loud enough to be heard over the Ace of Bass playing on the pub’s stereo. She emphatically pushed the ashtray towards Ross, nearly upsetting his empty pint glass.
But then trying to be subtle, she waved away the waft of smoke that had drifted towards her. She had told Ross time and again that she didn't truly mind his bad habit, she just didn't care for the way it made her hair smell afterwards.
“I spend a lot of money on my signature scent so I shouldn't like all that Chanel to go to waste,” she’d said as though she’d truly ever economised on anything in her life.
She took another drink from her wine glass and absently straightened the newspaper on the table between them.
“Do you really think a thrashing in the local and European elections this summer could mean curtains for Mr. Major?” she asked, reading the headline upside down.
“Caroline?” Ross laughed. His was a deep and infectious laugh that would warm a room but this time it was meant to call her on her nonsense. “You never seem quite as interested in world affairs as when you are asked a question about your love life. Just a friendly observation.”
“You did no such thing, Ross,” she tossed her head defiantly. “You asked me about Dwight Enys. And what makes you think your silly mate is part of my love life?”
