hey reshaper, asking u since the lustrous seems a bit... ehh. what can u tell us abt their powers?
Tumblr media
"Adenza? I thought we'd finished talking about them ages ago..."
< Well, you did. This ask is just over a year old, did you know? How marvelous.
"They can control, manipulate, and create light in all the forms that sort of thing can take. I don't much like to talk about them, but I can at least admit they're skilled with those abilities, I suppose."

honestly I think Ed would melt if Stede just started casually calling him terms of endearment in different languages, and when Ed asks what they mean and Stede excitedly explains Ed would dissolve completely.
Stede is thrilled to pour over his collection of Latin poetry for inspiration, and even more excited to explain the meanings and context to someone who actually wants to listen.

Do I love the idea of Octavius and Jed finally get together and they try to be subtle about their relationship but fail so hard and everyone immediately knows? Yes yes I do.
Do I also love the idea that they aren’t actively trying to be subtle/hide it but because both their societies aren’t big on PDA there isn’t a real visible difference so they date for near a year before anyone figures it out? Yes, absolutely, I need more
Because, again, the Romans and the American West weren’t big on PDA at all, in fact it was considered quite scandalous in both societies. So when Jed and Octavius start dating, they aren’t all over each other, they aren’t cuddling during movie night, at most ever Jed will call Octavius ‘Spark’ and Octavius occasionally call him ‘carissime’. But because no one but the cowboys would know what calling someone your ‘spark’ means and no one- unless you spoke Latin- would know what ‘carissime’ means, on the outside, there is no visible difference.
What the difference is is now when they hang out one-on-one they call them dates, and on those dates is when they will do some romantic gestures, or hold hands, or kiss on cheeks, etc.
They aren’t actively trying to hide their relationship, they’re actually rather open. Like if you asked them, they would be like “yeah, we’re dating, we’re together” but no one ever does because the whole museum is just assuming that they’re both still just pining after each other because of things they do catch.
Like, Nick will catch how Jed looks at Octavius when he isn’t looking
And Ahk DOES know Latin, so he just assumes that Octavius is calling him this pet name/term of endearment in Latin purposefully so that Jed doesn’t catch on what he’s actually saying. (Jed is fully aware of what he’s he actually saying).
And it’s finally ‘revealed’ because they actually do some form of PDA in front of them (something like Jed learns how to say something sweet in Latin for Octavius and Octavius just goes ‘fuck it’ and kisses him, or Octavius tries to use cowboy lingo and Jed is like ‘he’s to cute to not do SOMETHING’) and everyone looses their shit and are like “Finally!” And Jed and Octavius are so confused “what do you mean ‘finally’ we’ve been together for a year”
and then they collectively loose their shit again

Angry
Tumblr media
“Carissim'?”
“Hm?” Kirishima responded, his face scrunched up in concentration as he gently spread bruise cream across your cheek bone with his thumb. You shifted in your spot on top of the kitchen counter, suddenly finding the the decorative tiles conveniently opposite of your boyfriend in your line of sight fascinating.
“...Do you think I'm an angry person?” Your voice came out even and mostly nonchalant, but he knew better. The towering redhead couldn't help but smile softly and let out a sound somewhere between a chuckle and a sigh. It was a gentle sound, but it made your face flush embarrassed regardless of his intent. The irony of asking him this, as he tended to the nasty shiner on your face was not lost on you. “Tch, don't mind me. I'm just being weird” You tried to downplay the sincerity of your question, choosing to reach for the ice mask. Before you could reach it, Kirishima intercepted, taking your hand in his.
“You gotta wait half an hour before you can put a compress on,” he said apologetically before switching to a gentle and insistent tone, “and don't think you're gettin' out of my response either.” “I already know the answer, so let's pretend I didn't ask a dumb question, ya?” wrapping your arms around his waist you started nipping up his collar to his neck. “Nice try, but you're not gonna distract me” A genuine chuckle, a lovely rumbly sound you could feel in you chest came from Kirishima this time. He leaned back slightly as he pressed your shoulders back gently. “I think...you have a big heart,” Kirishima started, taking you chin gently in his large hand and tilted it until your eyes met. “and that your temper burns as bright as your love for others. You see people being mistreated, and for better or worse, you can't turn your back to that.”
“I may not always agree with how you launch yourself into dangerous situations,” He said a little sternly, and you could swear you could almost see him switch into his Pro-Hero Red Riot persona, “or burn yourself out”. However Kirishima relaxed back into his softer self just as quickly, “but I've also seen the faces of the people you've rushed to help when no one else would.”
“Ya, I could tell you to pick your battles a little more wisely...but at the end of the day...I think you'd have just as many fights on your roster, with each one having a more solid reason than the last.” He rubbed the back of his neck and looked a little sheepish, “-And you already know how I feel about manly or noble people.” “That's not why I do it” you couldn't help but scowl slightly, scooting closer to the edge of the stone counter to get ready to hop down, “I could care less about being “noble” or cool-” But Kirishima stopped you, putting both of his large hands on the counter top on either of your hips. He closed his eyes, resting his forehead gently against yours, “I know, love.” “Look- You asked me if I think you're an angry person, and I do.” Kirishima said kissing your forehead, continuing before you could voice your protests “-but I also think that the world would be just a little bit crueler without that anger.”
Tumblr media
Note: Carissimo is a lovely way to call someone 'Dearest', and it's close enough to 'Kirishima' that I can't resist.

LA VIA È BELLA E LUMINOSA
Tumblr media Tumblr media

My Dive into Latin Pet Names
So, those of you who've read A Study in Hands probably noticed the Latin pet names. Well. I did quite a bit of research into that, particular to names from ancient Rome (the Poems of Catullus were a notable source alongside other academic studies of letters and graffiti).
(I swear, the hours I've lost to research holes...)
There were expected names, a lot of diminutives, animals, honey-like terms, and other names that made a lot of sense. Here's what I found!
Tagging @mrsmungus, @aislinnstanaka, @udaberriwrites, @lena-hills and @danceswithdarkspawn, since you might be interested.
Note - names are specific to a male subject, where applicable
Carissime - my most dearest Dulcissime - my most sweetest Bellulus - little beauty Mellitus - sweet honey, darling, lovely . Anaticulus - little duck Columba - dove Lepus - hare Palumbulus - little dove Passerculum - little sparrow . (Mi) Amor - my love (Mi) Anime - my soul, my beloved one (Meum) Corculum - (my) little heart, sweetheart (Meae) Deliciae - my darling, my delight, my pleasure Dulcis - Sweetie (Mi) Lepor - my delight, my charm (Mea) Lux - my light Mel - honey Meliculum - little honey Melimelum - honey-apple (Mi) Ocelle - my little eye, apple of my eye (Mea) Rosa - my rose (Meum) Suavium - my sweetheart (Meum) Verculum - my little springtime (Mea) Vita - my life (Mea) Voluptas - my joy, my desire

Lux in Tenebris masterlist here
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Final part of a (no longer little) arc of Dee having a fever
This comes about a month or so into the First Recovery arc. Soup reference especially for @wildfaewhump
Contents: sickfic, demon whumpee, fever breaking, recovery, reunion after delirium, past torture, Sad Boi Demon Hours
~
Something nudged at Ilya’s shoulder, dragging them out of a deep, deep sleep.
“Nnnngh,” they grumbled, and rolled away from whatever had caused their unwelcome return to consciousness.
“Ilya,” came an unearthly voice out of the near-darkness.
“Uuuugh. What.” They fumbled for a pillow and squashed it down over their head.
A cool hand with strength like iron gently peeled the pillow back from their ear. “The demon is awake,” said Dara’s voice, her cool breath stirring against Ilya’s hair.
Ilya was alert like a bolt of lightning had struck them. They tore the pillow away from their head and tossed it away. Dara stood before them, limned in light, casting a faint glow into the corners of the room. Her face was relaxed, her eyes soft. Ilya let out a breath all at once.
“Awake?” they gasped out. “Now? What time is it?”
“Two in the afternoon,” Dara said with a rueful smile. “You fell asleep yesterday, by the way.” Ilya’s heart leapt in their chest at the thought of having left Dee alone for so long. They bolted upright, but Dara held out her hand to them. “Hush, you needed it. And the demon was just fine. He ate again.”
Ilya’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “Ate…?” They rubbed the sleep from their eyes and staggered out of bed, reaching for the wall as they did. “That’s…”
“Good,” Dara finished. “It’s very good.” Her smile grew wider. “Evangeline made more soup. I think the second try was better. He seemed to… like it more.” She nodded once, as if that closed the matter.
Ilya couldn’t help but grin at the thought of an angel being proud of being able to make soup. Still, they itched to see Dee. “Can I—?”
“Why do you think I came to get you?” Dara said, and stepped aside so Ilya could hurry past her and into the hall to Dee’s room.
Ilya’s heart froze when they set eyes on Dee. He lay in bed still, but he was propped up against the headboard without anyone having to hold him up. He was no longer deathly pale, he didn’t shiver, and his eyes—
His eyes were open. And when Ilya walked into the room, Dee’s eyes fell on them and stayed.
“Dee,” Ilya breathed, and stumbled to the bed.
“I-Ilya,” Dee murmured. “Carissime Ilya.” He gasped and glanced at the angel standing behind Ilya, his eyes momentarily fogged with fear – but then Ilya collapsed onto the bed beside him, gathering him into their arms and squeezing him tight.
“Dee. You’re okay,” Ilya whispered against his hair. It was damp with sweat again, and there was a thin sheen of it on his brow, but he was nowhere near as soaked as he had been yesterday. He didn’t smell like sickness and death the way he had yesterday. He felt a little warm, still, but the fever had broken. They were awake.
They were alive.
“I th-thought I was going to lose you, Dee,” Ilya said, shocked to feel tears streaming down their cheeks. They could barely speak past the lump in their throat. “I thought… Dee, you were so sick…”
Dee’s arms wound around Ilya’s waist and he held them close. His grip was weak and shaky. “I thought…” His voice sounded worn out.
The bedroom door clicked shut. Ilya’s head jerked up, and they were alone with Dee. They pressed their lips to Dee’s forehead and rocked him gently, trying to stop their tears.
“I’m sorry,” Ilya whispered. “I’m so sorry, Dee. I’m sorry we couldn’t help with the fever, and… I’m sorry about the holy water… and I’m sorry you thought it would be easier for us to kill you because the human in you is… is dead…”
Dee had gone very still against Ilya. He didn’t even breathe. He could have been made of stone if he didn’t begin to tremble, very slightly, against Ilya’s side.
“Dee,” Ilya said quickly. “No, please don’t…” They leaned back and met Dee’s eyes, pulled his chin up when he tried to duck away from their gaze. His pupils were huge, so round and black that they took up nearly the entire eye.
He shuddered and tipped his head in supplication. “I d-did not mean to tell you,” he rasped.
“I know,” Ilya said, cradling his face. Dee’s eyes fluttered shut at the touch. A tear trailed down his cheek. “I know that. But you did. And Dee?” The demon kept his eyes shut, but Ilya kept talking. “We already knew.”
Slowly, slowly, Dee’s eyes opened, as if the news was reaching him word by word. ”Venia?” he breathed.
Ilya pressed their lips together to keep them from trembling. “We already knew, Dee. I mean, Dara and Eva knew, and they told me pretty much immediately, so…”
Dee blinked rapidly. His hand curled gently around Ilya’s wrist, keeping their hand pressed against his cheek as if they would disappear if he let go. “Kn-knew?” he said softly. “Knew… when?”
Ilya’s brow furrowed. “I mean… from before they even carried you out of that basement, Dee. The virtues have known… from the moment they saw you… that you’re the only one in your body. They were never trying to save anyone else. Is that… Did you not know that?” Their eyes widened. “What… did you think was going to happen to you when…?”
They couldn’t continue, because the demon was weeping in their arms. He was sobbing like his heart was being cut out of his chest, like his bones were breaking, like he was being burned in holy water again. His fingers tangled in their shirt as he clutched at them and buried his face in their chest. They held him tight, stroking his hair and murmuring to him, although they didn’t know what to say.
The demon hardly seemed aware of himself, let alone them. He simply shuddered and sobbed, clutching them tight and muttering words that had no meaning to Ilya: “Quam misericordiam, et mihi?”
Translation of the Latin lines here:
“I-Ilya,” Dee murmured. “Dearest Ilya.” He gasped and glanced at the angel standing behind Ilya, his eyes momentarily fogged with fear – but then Ilya collapsed onto the bed beside him, gathering him into their arms and squeezing him tight.
~
Slowly, slowly, Dee’s eyes opened, as if the news was reaching him word by word. ”Pardon?” he breathed.
~
The demon hardly seemed aware of himself, let alone them. He simply shuddered and sobbed, clutching them tight and muttering words that had no meaning to Ilya: “What kindness, and for me?”

🪦🃏💅⚖️ for reshaper.. <:3
Tumblr media
🪦- Do you believe everyone should be given a proper burial or is it a waste of time to have gravediggers?
"Bit of a heavy question, but I'll entertain it. If you want my honest answer, then no, I don't think everyone is so deserving of such a thing."
"I don't believe it's a waste of time to have grave diggers if that's what you really want, but I think a natural burial is a better choice than going in a box. However I die, I certainly hope it's more interesting than that."
💅- Do you have time or resources for self-care or small luxuries?
"Of course, who exactly do you take me for? I make plenty of time to treat myself well it helps me keep aging gracefully."
> That statement is at least in part a joke since he hasn't aged for many sweeps by this point.
"And I have as many resources as I need for such things, what with the magic and all that."
⚖️- Do you believe the justice system works, or do you feel justice has to be taken into your own hands?
"The justice system is absolutely heinous, no one gets justice for anything here. That's part of what keeps me in the job-- the injustice people feel about the world they live in."
> That's a shockingly solemn statement for him to make.
🃏- What are your thoughts on organized religion?
"If they're not using it like the main sect of clowns or Adenza, then maybe they're alright, but as far as I've seen, it's a recipe for trouble and a magnet for some real pieces of work."

#AnneBoleynWeek, Day 2: Monday, 25 September — favorite historical Anne quote (either by Anne herself or about Anne)
"Once she was a wise woman, [endowed] with [many] outward good qualities […] and such [...] courtly graces […] as few women were of her time; with such an outward profession of gravity as was to be marvelled at [...]" William Thomas (1524(c.)-1554)
"Had audience of the King this morning and thanked him for the love he bears the State, and did the like by the Queen, who said she knew that God had inspired his Majesty to marry her, and that he could have found a greater personage than herself, but not one more anxious and ready to demonstrate her love towards the Signory." Carlo Capello, 1533
"As supper prevented further conservation I returned to my inn, and went next day to Court to pay my respects to the Queen, who, after keeping me a long time, being reminded by her attendants, sent for me, and received me very kindly, saying to me, “I am aware, my dear Winter (Vintere carissime) that you are beloved by the King and have many friends who wish you well. Reckon me among the number.” And then she added that she would not fail to serve me wherever she could." Thomas Wynter, (1510(c.)-1564)
"Considering the Word of God, to do good to one's enemy, I wished to warn her before hand, because I have daily experience that the King's wisdom is such as not to esteem her repentance of her rudeness and unnatural obstinacy when she has no choice." Anne Boleyn, (1501-7(c.)-1536
"[...]Given her great faith and wise patience, which rose above womanly courage. [...] Such that everyone [...] judges her life to have been prudent, and believes that they have committed a great offense in having thought so ill of her." Lancelot De Carle (1508(c.)-1568)
#chose some quotes that really counter the more popular narrative that she was; idk...volatile and frivolous?#anneboleynweek#she was a bon vivant but it seems she also had this depth#they need not be seen as mutually exclusive#as for the quote from anne's letter that's probably a controversial choice#since paul friedmann it's been termed 'pathetic' which is like...why?#she was right? that is quite literally what happened#i chose it bcus although it seems harsh to our standards it does seem also demonstrative of that 'prudence'#there also seems to be this tacit misunderstanding of what contemporaries meant when they referred to her 'grace'#it wasn't usually about skill at dance unless it was explicitly connected to this (although they praised that too)#grace was a manner#a way of being#a sense of composure#AB is not typically thought of someone with composure because her biggest detractor wrote with unsparing detail of all the times in which#she lost it#to the extent that i think we're losing the forest for the trees even to focus so much about the extent to which dispatches about incidents#concerning AB were 'accurate'#even if they all were which seems unlikely. they're not the sum of her life or character#they are just these snapshots#chapuys didn't attend court events with anne. he was personal witness to her demeanour literally only once when she was queen#(by which he remarked she was 'gracious enough'. so. there's that word again)#and once before (if he could have been a great judge of it from that one moment in which she's watching his conversation with henry above#from a hanging gallery of sorts)#the images chosen are more the vibe for the quotes but the one from BSR is very specific#it's a great scene and it's so well-acted bcus she feels BAD for him here. she pities him.#she feels bad for him because he's losing her bcs she's not going to settle for these terms#because she knows she's amazing and she's so self-posessed in the scene#and he cannot handle this and so it manifests in the reaction#(you're making a big mistake; except that is his own big projection)#she's willful and knows her worth and won't diminish herself for anyone

Camden and Morgott
Camden and Morgott detest one another in way that is at once professional and personal.
Both have a love of duty, sense, and chivalry to a point.
However, Morgott’s refusal to accept that the Golden Order is at the least flawed puts them at odds.
Camden views Morgott as a senseless old man stuck in the past, clinging to a failed Order.
Morgott sees Camden as a foul youth tarnished by the flame of ambition, disrespectful of all that he holds dear.
In a way, both are correct in their summations.
However, Morgott is more than an old man yelling at the clouds, he is a warrior of old, worthy of respect.
This frustrates Camden, who cannot understand Morgott’s insistence on clinging to that which has failed to bring sense and order to the Lands Between.
As such, when they clash, it is always a battle of wills. Morgott’s principles against Camden’s sensibilities.
In the end, neither comes to understand the other, viewing each other as obstacles.
Camden is a bit haunted by how cruelly dismissive of Morgott’s parting words he was, I think.
Below are the chapters of Carissime Discs I and III dealing with Margit and Morgott, respectively.

Writers, experiment!
If anyone’s getting bored of writing either modern or medieval, go to behindthename.
What i’ve been doing recently is going down the usage list and picking out a culture or era to write about. It’s not the usual you find in baby name websites either. There are mythology names, ancient era names, and even obscure culture names.
Then once you pick one, go to hell with it.
Pick out a trope based on genre, narrative, topical, or whatever. This will kickstart your creative juices especially since you need to cling onto something familiar in this new setting you’ve chosen. It’s something for your readers to cling onto as well.
Don’t see a trope that fits? That’s fine. Give yourself time and an idea will come to you. Remember, you’re experimenting here.
Got the trope/idea for your chosen setting? Great. Now research the language.
I don’t mean you should go and study it like when tackling a foreign language in school. I mean, researching the language you need as a writer. Terms of endearment, units of measurement, period-typical ideology, slurs, way of addressing people, etc.
Seems tedious? Yeah, i get you. But researching adds some sort of authenticity to you using a setting you’re unfamiliar with. It’s also a form of respect. Why use the English love and darling when you can use the Ancient Roman carissime and deliciae?
Another way to go about it is write the story out first and research later. Sometimes that works, sometimes it nags at you mid-write and you end up researching before finishing it anyway.
So that’s it really. Find a new culture/era, find a trope/idea that fits (or doesn’t), research, and write.
Writers are just like other creatives. Let’s not restrict ourselves to just medieval or just modern. Honestly, i’m pretty tired of seeing just those two.
Experiment! It’s pretty fun!
