here’s the thing.
if you’re one of the people celebrating our flag means death’s cancellation for whatever reason right now, i need you to realize that this is just a sign that whatever you love is next.
and i’m not saying that out of spite. having your favourite show cancelled is awful, i wouldn’t wish it on anyone. but if our little-gay-pirate-show-that-could can’t get its third and final season, the future of queer media is extremely grim.
ofmd was the definition of a sleeper hit. hbo max had no faith in it when the first season came out. it gained popularity purely through word-of-mouth. but it became one of max’s biggest shows, and it’s since been marketed as their flagship series.
it was the #1 most in-demand series in the world for 8 weeks (7 of those weeks consecutively). it’s currently in the 99.7th percentile of the comedy genre, meaning it’s in higher demand than 99.7% of all comedy series in the u.s. it has a 94% audience and critics score on rotten tomatoes. it’s the most in-demand hbo original series even above euphoria, succession, and the last of us.
it was nominated for 16 awards for the first season alone, including a GLAAD award and a peabody award. the second season was just nominated for an art directors guild award, which it was previously nominated for and won in the same category for season one.
besides awards, ofmd is critically-acclaimed and praised for its representation (including a cast of majority queer, bipoc, and disabled characters) and themes of anti-colonialism, challenging gender norms/toxic masculinity, and self-discovery/acceptance. it also has a diverse team of directors and writers consisting of several bipoc, women, and queer/trans/non-binary people.
on top of all of this, the plan for the show all along was only ever for three seasons. david jenkins only wanted three seasons for the full romcom structure to tell ed and stede’s story. that’s it. nothing more.
this isn’t an attempt to make you care about the show. but ofmd’s cancellation isn’t just a loss for the fanbase and the cast/crew. it’s a sign that it does not matter how successful or profitable shows highlighting lgbtq+ (or otherwise inclusive) narratives are or how many big names are involved. ofmd would not have been cancelled if it were a straight romcom. they would’ve magically found the budget. but corporate greed doesn’t care about us. they have no respect for queer people or queer media. and in the age of streaming, it’s only a matter of time until we lose all of it.

it's really fucking stressing me out to see these anti-Zionist ally posts going around confidently "exposing" & condemning Jewish anti-Zionist organizations (i'm not talking about Neturei Karta, i mean Jewish Voice for Peace & If Not Now) for various things ranging from like...actual documented bad behavior to totally vague unproven accusations, and all the sources linked for every claim are Zionist!
i mean. did you wonder at all if the Zionist ADL was gonna be objective about JVP? no?
listen. i am not a member of JVP & i've disagreed with their handling of things before but the accusation that no one involved with JVP is Jewish is just utter nonsense. i know many Jews involved with JVP, doing good work. i don't need to know that everyone in the leadership of that org is perfect (they aren't gonna be, in any big org) to know that shutting down Grand Central in protest was the right thing to do. right now JVP is one of the loudest voices speaking out against genocide & that doesn't mean they're above critique but honestly it does mean that you need to take actual Zionists with a grain of salt when they fall over themselves to hand you reasons to cancel them

ofmd fans essentially harassed a bunch of people in a character poll so badly the op had to delete it, shamed black people for commenting on how some fans idolized the slave owner characters, told people the current genocide in palestine isnt worth donating to because a tv show is more important and also harassed a palestinian already grieving over dead family, targeted and spammed a comment section biopic of a black poet trailer post, alot of racism towards brown people got leaked of the fan groups, also they compared the lgbt civil rights movement stonewall which involved alot of black/non white lgbt figures to the fucking show being cancelled. thats why nobody likes these people and nobody mentioned they be genocided btw (sorry if this sounds angry but this is the story so far whats been going on)
right, im listening & learning. idk i personally just came online & saw 50 different posts saying "if you still like ofmd jts clear you refuse to listen to marginalized people there r no excuses to be made for you go kys" & w my post abt it i wanted 2 say taht 2 tge average person ofmd is just a tv show, most ppl who know abt the show/have watched it/wharever dont know abt any of tgis, & imo its pretty pointless 2b mad at some fandom on the internet when we cld use that energy against tge politcians soldiers etc committing genocide in front of our eyes. obviously the racism in fan groups is bad but idont c how tahts solved by saying any1 who likes tge show is a racist who needs suicide since from what i understand tge victims of taht racism were, also ppl in those fangroups,

These people place fictional tv shows and characters over humanity. Some of these people going this hard for ofmd are well into their 30’s and up… hell, 50’s, 60’s. They are not children who don’t know any better. I feel like if you’re engaging in media that’s wrecked your brain to such an extent — to the point where you place your special interests over the lives of real people than it might just be too late for you.

...honestly wish him to be cancelled eventho I love him....
That's messed up. You can't claim to love him and want him cancelled at the same time
Hello, anon!
You have to take it up with the anon who said it, not me. Also, i think i disagree with you. It depends what you mean by "cancelled" and what the anon means by "cancelled".
If "cancelled" is fans and the general public distancing themselves from a celebrity that holds views they can't support and don't want this celebrity to have a platform to spread their views anymore (like J.K. Row*ing), then i disagree with you. I don't think we as fans should help promote a zion*st or a zi*nist-sympathiser while there is an ongoing genocide in Gaza. If he isn't willing to listen or change his behaviour when confronted with this, then he shouldn't be able to have this platform as a celebrity and be a role model for impressionable fans who would want to emulate his behaviour or adopt his beliefs. You can still love someone and disagree with their actions and beliefs they hold. Especially if you know these beliefs are out of ignorance.
If "cancelled" means hate on him and not let him learn from this, amend his views, grow from this and not forgive him when he apologises then i agree with you that he shouldn't be cancelled.
It honestly shouldn't be that hard to say you don’t support genocide...like it's genocide...

Not to say anything to bold, but everyone is so surprised and horrified at people being fired for not being pro-Israel as if hordes of people online haven't been very supportive of firing and hunting down even the mildest of conservative people. "How can they fire people for just expressing a different political opinion" as if we haven't cultivated an environment of firing people based on their political opinions.

700 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours and the airstrikes are more violent each night. Gaza's hospitals have fuel left for two more days. Israel only allowed aid into Gaza on the condition they didn't carry fuel. The Indonesian hospital has shut down already, because doctors have no supplies and no choice but to let the wounded die. They're calling it a collapse but the term doesn't do it justice.
Over a 100 incubator babies are at risk. There are 50.000 pregnant women in Gaza right now, and 5.500 due to give birth this month. Menstruating people are taking pills in order to stop their periods, because they do not have pads or water to maintain hygiene. Surgeons are operating without anesthesia. Water is not reaching Gazans because there's no electricity or fuel for water pumps.
There's no excuse for this. Israel justifies the airstrikes by saying they want to destroy Hamas infrastructure and release the hostages, but they have refused to negotiate for their release. Hamas informed Israel they wanted to release two elderly women without anything in return, and Israel refused. Netanyahu said they wouldn't take their own civilians back because it was "mendacious propaganda." When the hostages were finally released, Netanyahu prohibited the hospital from giving press releases. Yocheved Lifshitz went behind their backs and talked to the press anyway, saying she was treated very well by Hamas, but the government abandoned them. They're being used as straw men. Israel is conditioning the entry of fuel to the release of hostages and yet, according to The Wall Street Journal, when Hamas proposed to exchange 50 hostages for fuel they denied. IDF officials have said they fear the release of more hostages because that might withhold the order to their ground invasion. They do not care as long as they can use the hostages as a pretext for their slaughtering.
There's a turning tide for Palestine in public support. Support for Israel was built through decades of propaganda and we are making a dent into it. Zionists are desperate, holding zoom meetings to promote zionism, but we have to do so much more. We have to shame people in power into supporting the Palestinian cause.
Keep yourself updated and share Palestinian voices, looking to inform yourself from the sources. Palestinians have asked of us only that we share, tweet and post, over and over. Muna El-Kurd said every tweet is like a treasure to them, because their voices are repressed on social media and even on this very app. Make it your action item to share something about the Palestinian plight everyday. Here are some resources:
Al Jazeera
Anadolu Agency
Mondoweiss
Boycott Divest Sanction Movement
Palestinian Youth Movement
Mohammed El-Kurd (twitter / instagram)
Al-Shabaka (twitter / instagram)
Mariam Barghouti (twitter / instagram)
Muhammad Shehada (twitter)
Motaz Azaiza (instagram) - reporting directly from Gaza
Take action. You can participate in boycotts wherever you are in the world, through BDS guidelines. Right now, they are focusing on boycotting (don't be overwhelmed by gigantic boycott lists. Only boycott additional brands if you can):
Carrefour
HP
Puma
Sabra
Sodastream
Ahava cosmetics
Israeli fruits and vegetables
Push for a cultural boycott - pressure your favorite artist to speak out on Palestine and cancel any upcoming performances on occupied territory (Lorde cancelled her gig in Israel because of this. It works.)
If you can, participate in direct action or donate. Palestine Action works to shut down Israeli weapons factories in the UK and USA, and have successfully shut down one of their firms in London. Some of the activists are going on trial and are calling for mobilizing on court.
Call your representatives. The Labour Party in the UK had an emergency meeting after several councilors threatened to resign if they didn't condemn Israeli war crimes. Calling to show your complaints works, even more if you live in a country that funds genocide.
