Recently I’ve seen a lot of my adventure bike friends post comments about their newest loveliest bike; the Husqvarna Norden, KTM 890 Rally, Ducati DesertX or Multistrada, the Yamaha Teneré.
But all the pros and cons and comments seem to be comparing these bikes to only one point of reference - the BMW R1200 GS Oilhead.
They all want to be this bike. They are trying to be a lighter oilhead.
The bike shown here is my 2009 model. I last used it seriously when riding 11,000 miles down the length of the Andes. All it needed after that ordeal were new shocks, new tyres, new oil, and a wash.
I have hardly used it, or serviced it, in the intervening seven years but I pulled it out of its secret storage location a few weeks ago, changed the oil charged the battery and took off on two trips - one ride to the Steens Mountains and the Alvord Desert, and then a ride through Oregon, Idaho, Montana to the Canadian Rockies. On just these rides this month, I’ve ridden this bike on every imaginable kind of terrain - difficult gravel, rocks, sand, mud, and farm/forest tracks, hundred mph twisty roads, washboard Canadian logging roads, and hundreds of miles of fast boring highways. The bike carries full camping gear, clothes, tools, whisky, and often loads of ice, beer, and firewood.
There is plenty of power, tons of torque, just enough trickery with electronic suspension, ABS/Traction Control you can turn off, and it handles brilliantly from 2mph to 120mph.
For sure there are roads that do not work with this bike; but these are generally are out of my riding skill level on ANY bike and this machine has always got me back to safety when I’ve wandered out of my comfort zone.
Even BMW has a hard time competing with this machine.
