That post about how 40k words is classified as a novel got me thinking: how many people in the Simon Snow fandom have written not only a novel, but a longer novel than the source material?
Please note that, while I could probably get the data for what authors have written more than one/all of the books composite, this is mainly focused on the lengths of individual works. I used the Carry On fandom tag on AO3 for searching, since the Simon Snow and related fandoms tag has one fic that would place, and it’s a Fangirl fic, not a Simon Snow fic and AO3 is where most of the fics seem to be posted anyway.
First, we have Wayward Son, clocking in at roughly 92,000 words. While this is the shortest book in the series, that’s certainly not a small number. Despite this, our fanfic writers have gone above and beyond for a grand total of 48 fics surpassing WS in length. Of those 48, 38 are marked as complete, so the other 10 have the chance to rise passed that to our next book. Carry On is the second longest book in the series at around 132,000 words. This is where the biggest drop off occurs, with only 18 fics surviving the cut. Only two of the 18 are not marked as complete. Authors that made it this far: @/schreibfeather, @cutestkilla, @/youknowwhatigetit, @/nerdistheword, @/Teemfr3_Cherryscone, @/MrsCox
Any Way The Wind Blows is the longest in the series at around 173,000 words. Here, there are a whopping seven fics that are longer than the source material. Again, we have two unfinished works in this count. Bonus points for two fics that were completed before AWTWB was even announced for being really on top of the ball. Finally, there is the longest fic in the entire Simon Snow fandom. “Woundrous and Mystical” by @philaet0s is 383,000 words long. This fic falls just shy of the total composite word length for the series, 397,000. The fic with the best chance of surpassing this (based on current word count and incomplete status alone) is “Between the Lines” by @thehoneyedhufflepuff, which currently sits at 207,000 words.

Six Sentence Sunday
Hello! It’s been a WHILE but I have literally just been to Undredal (the magical little fjord village where my fic Northern Downpour is set)!!!!!!! Like! I went there! 🤩🤩🤩 And yes it was every bit as magical as I wrote it, honestly. I think possibly even more. The photo above is not mine because I was too lazy to make a new header, but I pretty much have that exact photo in my camera roll now.
I mean holy shit.
ANYWAY I did a ton of editing and writing while I was there, and it was atmospheric and perfect and Northern Downpour will probably be finished in the next few days!!! Here’s a little snippet from the next chapter! ✨ (the chapter is angsty, but this section is not.)
“Would you ever be a farmer, Baz?”
“Fuck no.” He laughs. “But there’s something about Undredal…”
“That makes you want to work a field? Or perhaps while away your days at the window, longing for your handsome goatherd to come home and ravish you in bed?”
“Shush.”
“You started this whole farmer thing.”
“You’re not even a farmer. Or a goatherd.”
“‘Handsome café worker’ doesn’t have quite the same rustic charm.”

This was my main Erotic Gropefest collab with @stardustasincocaine and it's also probably the fic I wrote over the longest period of time? My schedule is really crazy so I'm usually a "sit down and bang it out" kind of writer (pun intended... this fic is VERY smutty lmao). I'm extremely proud of how it turned out, and Tessa's art for this fic is next level. TLDR: Dom/sub dynamic, lots of sex, lots of feelings.
The Edge of Memory, 8k, rated T
The only non-explicit fic that made my top 5! Lol. In contrast to the previous fic, this one I wrote in one crazy sprint in less than 12 hours as a pinch hit for @captain-aralias. I'm honestly kind of obsessed with how it turned out? Who knew I could write an interesting plot without sex? Not me. I also never did it again lmao. TLDR: Canon divergent amnesia fic where Simon loses his memory right after he defeats the Humdrum and the Mage and forgets all of 8th year.
Angst, COC 2021, 2k, rated E
This is probably my favorite thing I wrote for COC 2021, and I wrote... a lot. Like 50,000 words, more than I've ever written in that short a time before. It's honestly a pretty fucked up ficlet, but it was extremely cathartic to write. Plus, what was I supposed to do with the angst prompt? NOT torture Baz? TLDR: Coffin fic, coffin fic, COFFIN FIC!
A Room with a View, 7.5k, rated E
I feel like this was the first truly filthy thing I ever wrote for the CO fandom, and I simply have not looked back since. This fic was a gift for @mostlymaudlin, who gave the most delicious and inspiring prompts (and also just makes delicious and inspiring content on the reg), and I reeeally wanted to do it justice for them. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. TLDR: Baz and Simon go on a ski vacation and fuck a lot. Bonus Brobelove!
Every Part of You, 8k, rated E
This was the first fic I wrote after really connecting with other people in the fandom, and it was a gift for @caitybug :) It's sweet, a lil smutty, a little angsty. Honestly, I don't think it's as good as some of my more recent stuff, but it has a special place in my heart because it helped me connect to some of my fave fandom humans <3 TLDR: Simon works through his feelings both with sex and with words and a lot of help from Baz.

So...I was supposed to post 25 last week & I did not. Surprise! It's just got some issues (imo) & I haven't been writing so I haven't fixed it...if it needs fixed...you know. A cycle. I've considered breaking it into two shorter chapters because I think part one could be ready to be Seen, but idk. Maybe I'll make a decision this week. I really wanted to have 26 posted on the fic's anniversary (next Thursday) so uh. Yeah.

ME? Having words to share on this WIP Wednesday?? Absolutely wild, but TRUE!
Somehow I wrote just about 3.5K words this week. The first complete thing I've written in almost 18 months! It's rough, but it's DONE.
Anyway, here are some snippets from my First Year chapter for the Picture Book Project!
There once was a boy who possessed so much magic he could light up the entire world.
They both looked, as a student near the front of the room thrusted his pelvis at his football. “At least you’re not that poor bloke,” she said with a grin. “Imagine inheriting a belt buckle for your magical instrument.”
“Well I can’t just let her demolish Watford! Someone will get hurt!” He screamed.
“YOU’RE SOMEONE!” She shouted back.
