Little more about my Admin AU.
Mobs are not intelligent enough to become full-fledged players or have any relationships with players.
Some mobs have their own trading and pack system, they are indeed smarter than other mobs, but still do not reach the player’s level.
Cub must grow up in natural conditions with adults who can take care of them. But there are always players who build zoos and other dregs. Sometimes the prohibition of zoos and personal possessions on wild mobs that are not created for taming is even specified by a separate server rule in the user agreement.
Taking mobs from their natural environment is harmful and irresponsible. There are players who even perceive them as their own children, which is completely wrong. This is condemned even by ordinary players, and even more so by admins. For this you can be kicked out of the server and get a lot of unpleasant consequences on other servers, from a ban on some high-level and personal servers to permanent death.
Cub, when ripped out of their habitat, experience terrible stress and may die. Some, like pets, imitate the player’s behavior in order to pass as one of their own and get rid of potential danger. What some people perceive as games is actually a way to get rid of stress, for example, the eternal desire to butt heads with piglins or zombie pigs. They try to relieve stress by obsessing over repetitive movements that they associate with safety.

here’s why, in my opinion, Apollo Justice doesn’t suck
first and foremost, it has the best animation out of the entire series. the trilogy’s pixelated characters and backgrounds were suiting for its cute feel and its perky aesthetic, but weren’t like masterpieces or anything (even the HD version of the trilogy just added some gloss over the original models, nothing more). but Apollo Justice delivered. the game gave us polished, shiny character designs and refined backgrounds (Guy Eldoon, Lamiroir, the doctor’s office from Turnabout Corner, the dressing rooms from Turnabout Serenade). i could literally replay the game just to admire the artwork. it’s so perfect.
my flatmate straight-up hates the game because of what they did to Phoenix and it’s understandable because she grew up playing the trilogy. i can imagine that if you’re reading this and you too grew up playing the trilogy, you’d be miffed that i’m defending a game that turned the main character into a drunken tramp, basically. it’s like when i read posts that defend Thieves in Time (although that game has absolutely no defense whatsoever). and i get it. i was pissed off too. i get even more pissed off when i think that Capcom backed down from their initial idea of moving onto a new defense attorney’s story and then have Phoenix return for Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, which, let’s be real, weren’t masterpieces. actually, i think Dual Destinies is the worst game in the series because it tried salvaging what was left from Apollo Justice’s catastrophic take on Phoenix’s fate as a lawyer and turning Apollo into a mere sidekick. all this being said, i’d much rather they stuck to their initial idea.
as i said in my previous essay, Trials and Tribulations wrapped up the trilogy masterfully. as such, it didn’t leave any room for a sequel. i don’t think Apollo is an interesting character. hell, i’d even say he’s boring. but, i respect the idea of moving onto a new character and his own story. i understand why they did a seven year jump and their focus on how the law has changed. it’s actually interesting to see how the respected court and the law all comes crumbling down due to the rise of wrongfully accused people and fabricated evidence, as well as how this paved the way for the existence of the jury in Turnabout Succession. and i think they could have evaded all the hate the game got by simply removing Phoenix. portray him as a living legend but don’t have him actually show up. have him rise to the ranks of Edgeworth, a respected defense attorney or chief of something. don’t turn the office into a magic shop, and don’t go behind the fans’ backs and have him adopt a daughter and then conceal the truth. it just felt like i was being disrespected for all the emotional investment i put into the trilogy. and most importantly, don’t back down from your initial idea. use Apollo Justice as a starting point, where you sow the seeds for another epic trilogy. have an Apollo Justice 5 and 6, where the events transpire into something huge, continue with the Gramarye backstory. but i guess Capcom got scared because of the backlash, so we got Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice instead, which have diluted, watered down narratives in comparison to the trilogy’s story arcs.
i know it seems like i hate Apollo Justice, but i don’t. i want you to view it as a solo game. it had four awesome cases with interesting characters, unbeatable animation, awesome music and an interesting overall story. i might think Apollo is a dull character, a blunt version of Phoenix, stripped of the fun comments and thoughts, but he’s the yin to Trucy’s yang. Trucy is an excellent assistant. and the final reveal about the two makes their relationship even more fulfilling for the character. the combination of the two characters feels refreshing, especially as the story progresses and they start getting familiar with each other. as for the rest of the cast, we get a rockstar prosecutor who is charming as hell and his psychotic brother who turns the tables on everything we’ve come to know about the series by being both a villain and a defense attorney. the defense attorneys were supposed to be the good guys..... the Gramarye stuff is also rich in lore, and the untimely death of Zak Gramarye really adds a darker tone to the game. Turnabout Succession delves deep into the seven year gap and the truth by allowing us to play as Phoenix and time-hop around. although the digital jury system felt cheap and kind of like an anticlimactic layer to the story (which was never brought up again in future games) it was the right solution for the law’s problems.
Turnabout Serenade is my favorite case from the game because Daryan Crescend’s dick-looking hair is so hot the setting is so spectacular, the hidden passages feel so Scooby-Doo-like (the Hex Girls Mystery Inc. episode!) and the motive surrounding illegal imports of miracle cocoons is so absurd it might as well feel real. honestly, the world has changed in the seven years since we played as Phoenix and it feels kinda future apocalyptic but future apocalyptic chill. it gave me Teen Titans or Loonatics Unleashed vibes. and even so, the cases feel both nostalgic and fresh. there’s just something so Phoenix Wright about murders happening real-time whilst you’re at the scene (Turnabout Serenade) or a search for stolen panties turning into a full-blown mafia story about the mob’s doctor and his blackmail (Turnabout Corner). as for gameplay, Apollo’s ability to detect lies is a great replacement for Phoenix’s magatama. the game hones the trilogy’s best elements and even adds to them, by having Ema Skye (an annoying but finally competent detective) bring back her various forensics tricks and even allowing the player to zoom in on specific areas of the locations.
so, i think the hate Apollo Justice got was undeserving. i understand why it got so much of it, but it ultimately made things worse for the franchise. sure, we got Phoenix back, but it never felt the same again. and Athena Cykes is a better Apollo, but still dull. maybe she could fix the problems caused by Apollo Justice but she didn’t. we never got to meet Apollo. Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice both tried to add some backstory to the character but failed. ok i can understand Apollo’s best friend being Clay Terran and his love for the space centre, but how the hell did he end up in Khura’in after Lamiroir abandoned him? honey, it just doesn’t work... but whatever. Apollo Justice is a great solo outing, and an even greater wasted opportunity... tragic, tbh.

Children of Morta is a game about family. Mechanically, it’s a satisfying dungeon crawler where you grind through bad guys, level up your characters, and unlock better abilities so that you can face off against a series of increasingly difficult bosses. But really, at its heart, it’s a compelling game about what it means to be a part of a family, and how being surrounded by loved ones can make you a better, stronger person.
The Bergson family, six of whom you’re able to play as, is made up of warriors, mages, and inventors all tasked with holding back the Corruption–which has, at the game’s opening, started to spread across their homeland. Their house sits atop a shrine, and to battle against the evil forces of the demonic Ou they need to travel through portals and conquer dungeons, in order to awaken three spirits that can guard against the Corruption.

It’s a cliched fantasy setup, but Children of Morta makes the most of its tropes by making sure that you’re invested in the Bergsons and their plight. Between runs of the dungeons, you’re treated to cutscenes and vignettes of the family interacting with one another, and you get to know the beats of their lives and what they get up to when they’re not enduring dungeons. You start with two playable characters, family patriarch John and his eldest daughter Linda, but the other four are introduced within the game’s opening half. Seeing them train and grow in cutscenes, and getting a sense of their place within the family, means that you’re already attached to the characters before you get your hands on them.
Gameplay in Children of Morta involves battling your way through hordes of enemies to reach each dungeon’s boss, exploring thoroughly and nabbing as many temporary boosts as you can along the way. Each character has three main abilities they’ll unlock as they level up: a standard attack that can be used continuously, a special attack with a cooldown, and a more defensive ability (although some of these can still do damage). The combat isn’t necessarily super deep, but it’s a lot of fun thanks to some extremely satisfying animation and the strategic possibilities that become available as you level up. Dungeons consist of multiple levels and are generated anew each time you enter, so finding the entrance to the next level will always require some exploration. Occasionally I’d find myself frustrated when the path to the exit ended up being very elaborate, but this also kept the game feeling fresh when some dungeons took a long time to clear.
There’s an imbalance between the number of melee and ranged characters–four melee to two ranged–which is a shame, because playing the ranged characters changes the rhythm of the game significantly by encouraging a slower, more thoughtful playstyle, and only having two of them feels like a missed opportunity. I found that Linda (who uses a bow and arrow) was the character I most often managed to beat bosses with, since so many bosses are primed to punish you for getting too close, and I would have loved to have another option beyond her and Lucy, the family’s youngest daughter.

Each character plays differently, and you’ll no doubt have your favorites. Lucy can shoot a continuous wave of fireballs while standing still, and can be upgraded to withstand three hits without damage; Kevin, the youngest son, can dramatically increase his speed and strength by building up “rage” with continuous knife attacks, but he needs to get very up-close to do so before using his power of invisibility to get out of danger. Some characters are less interesting; for the life of me I can’t figure out how to make Joey, who swings a huge hammer, effective. But it’s still fun trying out a character you haven’t played for a few runs and getting into the groove with each of their distinct rhythms.
You need to switch characters regularly, too, as any member of the family who is used too many times in a row begins to suffer from corruption fatigue, which lowers their overall health until they’re given time to recover. Each member of the family can also unlock new abilities that benefit every other family member as they level up (like higher rates of critical attack or even assists in certain situations), and later abilities in their skill trees can be very useful–I initially dismissed John for being too slow but found his shield and wide swing arc extremely useful later in the game, and was ultimately glad that the game encouraged me to use every character and discover their strengths (in five cases out of six, at least).
The plot’s focus on the family, paired with the tremendous art and beautiful animation, makes it easy to love the Bergsons. Lucy is so full of energy that she’ll jump in the middle of her run animation (which doesn’t interrupt your pathfinding at all but adds personality to her sprite), while eldest son Mark’s Naruto-style run is a perfect complement to his martial arts fighting style. Charming touches like this are everywhere, and they give the characters more personality. You feel those unique traits come through in combat, too; there are few things more satisfying than seeing Kevin shimmer with rage and rip through a huge mob of enemies.

And as with any family gathering, Children of Morta will encourage and then test your patience. It’s a grind-heavy game; it was very rare for me to beat a dungeon on my first shot, as most required that I level up and learn the boss’ attack patterns, which requires storming through the dungeon to get to them a few times. You can get away with running right past most enemy mobs, but to stand a chance against the boss at the end, you want to be armed with powerful buffs, and growing stronger requires farming experience and gold to unlock new abilities and improve your stats.
However, it takes a long time for the grind to start wearing you down. The combat is meaty and intense, and the allure of growing stronger is so compelling that dealing with huge crowds and collecting all the gold they spill can hold your attention for hours. There’s a sharp increase in difficulty right at the end, but I could always identify what had gone right–which fights I’d avoided, which charms I’d made use of, how I’d thought about my character’s relative strengths and weaknesses to the boss–and adjust my strategies accordingly to continue to do well. The grind helped make me a better player, instead of simply acting as a level gate.

There are special buffs that are only active for that session, and you have a much better chance of beating the boss if you go in after thoroughly exploring the dungeon and powering up. There are many different kinds of buff you can unlock, some temporary, some permanent; I found that I did far better against bosses when I went in with a lot of them active. You can find the various items and objects that make you more powerful throughout each dungeon, or buy them from shopkeepers that pop up, and I found myself getting excited whenever I found a good combination. Going up against a boss that has beaten you several times, now armed with a combination that you think will give you an advantage, is a great feeling.
Your dungeon runs are also broken up by numerous subquests that can appear throughout each dungeon, which expand on the game’s lore, introduce new NPCs, and result in significant upgrades or rewards. A few even have major narrative impact–there are a series of quests early on that end with the Bergsons adopting and raising an adorable puppy, for instance. But if one dungeon is really giving you grief, eventually it can feel like the game’s ready for you to move on before you’re ready yourself–you’ll stop getting cutscenes and character vignettes after missions, and you’ll find that you’ve run out of subquests to complete. But then, the feeling of eventually taking down a boss that was troubling you is extremely satisfying, especially knowing that you’re going to get more lovely character moments as you try to beat the next one.

You also have the option of playing the whole game in co-op, and the game balance differs depending on whether you’re alone or not. However, I found myself preferring to stick to solo play–it’s annoying for a friend to talk over cutscenes and the difficulty scaling makes co-op more complicated.
Children of Morta’s fantastic art style and enjoyable storytelling take what would have been an otherwise fun roguelike dungeon-crawler and elevate it a great deal. Taking down enemies and eventually triumphing over bosses is enjoyable, but what kept bringing me back was the connection I felt to the Bergsons, and my sincere desire to help them push back against the Corruption. After all, it’s a lot easier dealing with dungeons full of monsters when you have a family to come home to.

Spinner plays FFXIV Stormblood
Finished FFXIV 4.0 MSQ over the weekend (DRK to 70, WHM to 77), hoo boy. I know I've got the 4.x patches to go but I did wind up liking Stormblood more than I thought. Spoilers ahoy!
Highlights:
- started the SB questline right about the same time as everyone else started ShB *sobs* It did mean I landed in the midst of some good FATE-grinding parties, however, at little as that matters
- I liked the Baelsar’s Wall but those last twin bosses can go die in a fire
- couldn’t get really sad over Papalymo because he barely contributed anything to the story except to snark at Yda. I like him better in DFFOO, where he is an excellent black mage. So, like, the exact opposite of my feelings regarding Thancred.
- Shinryu, Omega, and Cid all disappeared for the majority of the Stormblood questline and tbh it suffered for their absences. At least Estinien, of all people, was tracking the first two down.
- thankfully the WHM quests were all in the first zone I got access to and I already had it at 70 so I just zipped through them
----- me: *fails repeatedly at WHM lvl 70 quest*
----- me: *returns w/gear 10 lvls higher* Time for my vengeance.
----- (Yes, I know I should always keep my gear up to date and to be fair I always keep it at the appropriate level or better when other people are involved. This, however, was single-player duty and my lack of better gear didn’t matter since I didn’t even have the lvl 61 dungeon unlocked yet.)
- never cared at all for Zenos. Nope. Not at all. He and his golf club bag of swords can go fall off Shinryu's platforms. (I also had 0% trouble w/his solo fights on DRK? Maybe it was the new flat damage reduction baked into all tanks, idk, or maybe it was having Aug Shire/at lvl gear for each instance. I kept my health up just fine and had to be wiped out via his insta-kill move for the duty to end. But honestly it felt like good DRK job fantasy, taking on this insurmountable foe and clawing my way past death to defend my fallen comrades.) Also my character literally viewed him as a troubled teen taking out his issues on everyone around him via murder and wasn't impressed w/him in the least. But anyway.
- I came to tolerate Lyse but that's it. Hot-blooded people who rush off and act w/o thinking irritate me greatly IRL and it's no different in virtual life. Plus, she's almost literally an anime version of me who traded book smarts for punching ability. Even her name is a mere one letter from mine. It's kinda weird. She’s my mirror universe self. Ugh.
- it’s really disappointing Square Enix gives me so few options in killing myself. Let me jump off cliffs to my messy death already, dang it. Skyrim let me do it within the first 2 minutes of ever playing, haha.
- the sharks fly. the bears fly. the goobues fly. why not.
- ah, yes, gyuki. Skyrim prepared me for unreasonably bloodthirsty walruses. And for the unreasonably powerful and murderous mammoths.

- I just... really don’t understand why Highlanders live in a desert nation and have geographic and cultural neighbors based off of India and yet they have Old English/OHG names. Why???
- also why is Lyse blindingly white (and Minfilia, for that matter) in stark contrast to other Highlanders???

- once again, I'm probably the only person who loved the WHM quests (all SB job quests seem to return to their 1 - 30 [or 30 - 50?] roots and I don't mind). Did lots of screaming over DRK 60 - 70. I saved them all up and did them right away when I hit 70; they flow much better w/no interruptions
- explored/quested/ground FATE's on DRK but ran new dungeons on WHM as that's my comfort job. Failed twice on the mechanics of Bardam's Mettle 2nd boss but no wipes so we're good. So many overconfident gunbreaker tanks, though. T__T *I* did a better job tanking/killing a pack of like 12 mobs as WHM in Sirensong Sea than one bunbreaker, smh.
- I found Magnai to be entirely too amusing. I also want his moves on WAR. 
- somehow missed Shisui entirely? Still haven't got all aether currents in the Ruby Sea RIP me
------ (2 month later addendum: finally unlocked it and got my aether currents. Now, to never return to that area ever again.)
- no underwater mobs is so disappointing. Let me throw fireballs and Holys and swing a greatsword underwater already. Let me tell you, nothing is as exciting as going diving in Morrowind with only a 22% chance to successfully cast Waterbreathing and this Kojin blessing is such an OP cheat.
- enjoying my Grani mount tbh. I have no idea if it's lore-relevant for ShB; I just saw the name lifted straight from Norse myth and was like, "Want." It's more of a horse-shaped reptile, however, with 'paws' that become increasingly creepy the more you stare at them. I wonder if it eats meat like the thestrals in HP.
- shooting minigames? Okay. Platforming minigames? AW HECK NO I THOUGHT I WAS DONE W/THIS WHEN I LEFT LEGO GAMES TAKE THIS AWAY FROM ME PLATFORMING IS MY GREATEST ENEMY
- I was derping around in Kugane and accidentally started doing the tower jumping puzzle. As soon as I figured out what I was doing I had to run away immediately to save my sanity.
- throwing on tank stance and rushing in to save someone from a mob or a FATE is still as heady a feeling as ever (except when they then run off and leave you to die, like, no why please). Or raising people out in the wild. I particularly love that cyclops boss FATE near Whitebrim bc I can go stand on the edges as a powerful WHM and raise people 10x as the bodies keep hitting the floor. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s still so great.
- I do enjoy the Morrowind feel of walking through a new zone and taking in the scenery but I'd like it more if all the wildlife wasn't super powerful and aggro'ing on me every 10 ft. It feels less like an ecosystem and more like generic monster land when there are no longer any non-aggressive mobs like there were in ARR. The Gyr Abanian landscapes are slowly growing on me, however.
- me, flying through Porta Praetoria/Lochs: Those wooden bonfires must be awfully expensive, if wood is as scarce in Gyr Abania as I think....
- loved the Azim Steppe - atmosphere, music, lore, everything. Waiting for someone to call me out on this bc I just really love Xaela (and may make a male Xaela alt one day).
- had minor moral qualms over fighting in the Naadam for the Mol bc I wanted to claim victory for the Orl
- I do really like those moments in Heavensward and Stormblood when the game recreates the epic moments from the trailers (the WoL walking through the soldiers to fight the dragon; the WoL and Lyse sparring, etc.). 
- I was singing, “I don’t care, I don’t care,” to the tune of Let It Go during the Ala Mhigo cutscenes but the resistance singing their anthem really got to me nevertheless. Many voices united and uplifted and song always hits me hard emotionally.
- my character still looking at Zenos with 0% thirst (negative amounts of thirst, tbh) like, “Who is this sassy lost child?”
- then again my character is like 31 yrs old here with a backstory summed up as ‘angry single mom goes to check on friend, ends up killing a god and getting recruited to save the world’
- Pipin is best Lalafell; I will defend him with my life but he has Tizona now and doesn't need me. The absolute shortest guy around is calling the shots in this military campaign and I love it. At least his dad gave him a box to stand on so he could see over the table during the important strategic military discussions.
- the siege of Ala Mhigo taught us that thaumaturges/black mages are the living equivalent of heavy artillery, nice nice nice
- got lucky and had a competent crew in DF to fight Shinryu
- tbh my character would probably kick Asahi’s dad while he was down and cave in his ribs, just finishing him off. It’s no wonder Asahi turned out as bad as he did, with parents as horrifically self-centered as THAT.
- I humbly submit ‘Higwit’ as a fan-name for that elezen following Asahi around - an acronym for ‘Hien Is Great - Who Is That?!’ based on an old LOTR fan meme. Who else here remembers Figwit before he became Lindir?
- I liked the Tsukuyomi fight but I can’t remember anything specific about it now, not even the mechs. 
- I did spend a lot of time screenshotting Hien because he is an awesome bro and I would endure Ala Mhigo all over again for him
