I saw your post about not being able to take a break any time soon, and just wanted to send you some good vibes. These are rough times, and even if you can’t go somewhere else, a staycation can still be really nice if you can take the time. (I’m so sorry if you can’t right now, and hope that you’ll be able to, soon.) Take care! -a big fan of your writing
thank you <333 i could take a staycation, but the last thing i want right now is to be stuck inside my apartment where i’ve been stuck for however many months now like many of you 💀💀💀💀(not including the near 6 weeks of panic this spring where i didnt know if i’d still have a job and couldn’t go anywhere/didn’t have actual Work work). i wouldn’t be so frustrated if my family had been more vigilant about social distancing, but they haven’t. so i’m stuck, minus helping close out the zine next month-ish (which will result in a self-imposed quarantine).

Reunions and/or Take Me Instead with Maedhros, Fingon and Gil-Galad/other adoptees?
(I was going to go the angstiest possible route with this but the only context I could think of would’ve taken a thousand words just in setup so I scrapped it and did this instead, lol. Have some probably-unrealistic tooth-rottingly-fluffy Russingon kidfic!)
55. Reunions || 64. Take Me Instead
“Atya!” Gil-galad cried, his little face lighting up as he saw his father striding down the hall. Heedless of proper princely etiquette, he rushed forward and barrelled into Maedhros, grabbing tight at his legs and beaming up at his (very, very) tall father.
Maedhros’ face split into a grin. His son barely reached his waist (they joked he got his height from Fingon’s side of the family, when in reality he got everything from Fingon’s aunt, his birth mother) but he’d grown a few inches since Maedhros had seen him last. Back then he was level with his thighs; now he could reach up to tickle Maedhros’ stomach as his other father was so fond of doing to him.
“Stop that,” Maedhros scolded gently, swatting Gil’s hands away. It wasn’t as if he could feel it beneath his armor, but Gil thought it was hilarious when he pretended to be overcome with fits of giggles. There was no one else, not even Fingon, who could make Maedhros laugh like that.
“Where’s your adar?” he asked, scooping Gil up into his arms.
“Dunno!” Gil shrugged. “Atya, put me on your shoulders?”
Maedhros couldn’t say no, though he worried Gil’s head would brush the ceiling if he did so. “Don’t you think you’re tall enough?” he asked even as he lifted Gil up and settled him on his shoulders.
Gil immediately clapped his hands over Maedhros’ eyes. “Nope!” he exclaimed. “When I’m as tall as you, then I’ll be tall enough!”
“I don’t know,” Maedhros said thoughtfully, squinting through the little gaps between Gil’s fingers and carefully making his way forward. “Your adar is awfully short...what if you only get to his height?”
“But you’re tall, and you’re my Atya,” Gil pointed out. Maedhros sighed: Gil was still too young to really understand the truth of his heritage, even should they explain it to him.
“I suppose,” he said instead of something damning. “And your Uncle Turukáno, your adar’s brother is nearly as tall as I am.”
Gil snorted, moving his hands so they wrapped around Maedhros’ neck. His chin rested on Maedhros’ head, and he felt Gil’s jaw move as he protested, “No way!”
“It’s true,” Maedhros said solemnly, glancing up to see his son staring down at him. “You’ve never met him, but he’s almost as scary as I am.”
Gil scoffed. In the early days, when he’d grown comfortable with Fingon but had just barely met Maedhros, he’d been terrified of him. It broke Maedhros’ heart to see this little child so afraid, flinching back like he was a monster (and you are, some treacherous part of himself whispered, the part that was easier to ignore when Finno and Gil were around), especially when Fingon clearly adored him so and wanted Maedhros to love him too...
Maedhros’ love wasn’t the problem, but his scarred and broken face. In time Gil had come to love him, too—his exuberant welcome and his ease atop Maedhros’ shoulders was proof enough of that—but he still remembered how scary Maedhros had been. Gil probably still thought he was hideous, but good for scaring away real monsters. At least, that’s what Maedhros hoped.
“Who’s scarier than you are?” Fingon asked, rounding the corner. His eyes shone with a joyous light to behold his husband and his son smiling together, and the tenderness in his smile made Maedhros’ chest warm.
“Turno,” Maedhros said. “Don’t you agree?”
“Hmmm...” Fingon made a show of considering, even as Gil-galad wriggled and demanded to get down. Maedhros crouched so Fingon could lift him off his shoulders.
At last Fingon tapped Gil’s nose. “You know what, I think your atya’s right,” he pronounced. “My brother is scarier—if only because he’s so scarily boring!”
“Atya isn’t boring!” Gil agreed. “Atya fights dragons all day and builds castles out of ice and breathes fire into Stinky Man’s face!”
Maedhros winced: “Stinky Man” was Fingon’s playful name for Þauron in Gil’s bedtime stories, where he was a much more comic villain prone to tripping and falling off mountains or wearing false mustaches that get ripped off by a brave Adanic warrior, exposing him as a spy. It took the sting out of the worst of Maedhros’ memories of his torment, which was half the point, but he couldn’t help but wish he was half as valiant as the fiery hero in Gil’s stories.
“And I’m nearly as boring as Uncle Turno,” Fingon sighed. “What do I do but send you off to your nursemaids and write letters to people who hate me?”
“You tell him stories,” Maedhros offered. “You’re always there to tuck him into bed while I’m far away in the east. You give him kisses—”
“Ewww,” Gil groaned, only for both his fathers to descend upon him and kiss him until he squirmed out of Fingon’s hold and ran away.
Before Fingon could chase after him, Maedhros stopped him and took the opportunity to kiss his husband thoroughly on the lips. Fingon gasped and leaned into him, but pulled away all too quickly.
“Not now, love,” he murmured, but the way his eyes shone and the gold in his hair gleamed in the torchlight was all Maedhros could ever ask for.
“Gross,” Gil-galad shouted, then darted around the corner.
“Gil, come back!” Fingon laughed. “We’re going to have dinner as a family, with Haru too, and then I’ll give you a bath—”
“No baths! I hate taking baths!” Gil whined, even as Maedhros strode ahead, catching up quickly thanks to his long legs, and grabbed him firmly by the hand.
“I’ll take you to the baths no matter what, you dirty little elfling!” Fingon scolded. “I know you visited the stables earlier today; I can smell the horse on you!”
“Take me instead, if Gil doesn’t want to,” Maedhros offered, winking at his husband. “I’ve been riding for days, I’m sure I stink worse than Gil does.”
“Not as bad as Stinky Man,” Fingon quipped, but a fire smoldered in his eyes as he brushed Maedhros’ shoulder. I plan on taking you more than just to the baths, he whispered across their bond. It’s been far too long.
Maedhros shivered with anticipation. I look forward to it, he replied.
“How about we talk Haru into bathing you instead?” Maedhros proposed.
Gil considered this. “Only if it’s his bath,” he decided. “It’s huge, like a swimming pool!”
“You have the best ideas, Russo!” Fingon exclaimed. How long do you think we could convince my father to handle him?
Long enough for whatever you’re planning, Maedhros replied, and knew that while he certainly was not the luckiest elf in Beleriand, he was the most blessed when it came to this, his perfect little family.

Alphabetti Spaghetti (3/3)
Please believe. - P
How many pages did the last book you read have? I don’t even remember the last time I opened it; but if I have to guess, it’s probably anywhere between 600–800 pages.
What do you like on your pancakes? Soaked in butter, with peanut butter and maple syrup on the side. My dad will also sometimes mix bacon into the batter, and it always turns out delicious.
Do you like small parties or large parties more? I love going to any kind of party, but I like large ones just a little bit more just because it’s easier to blend in and go unnoticed for the most part. I usually feel pressured at smaller parties.
What was the last exam you passed in? I have no idea. Maybe a history exam? I remember taking a Rizal exam right before the pandemic started and I never got the results for that since classes were canceled shortly after. I’ll never know if I actually passed that test haha.
Do you think paw prints are cute? Yesssssss.
How much would you pay a neighbour to do your lawn? We have someone in the village who does that, and my mom usually gives him a tip of I would guess around ₱100.
Ordinary pens, scented pens, gel pens or felt tip pens? Ordinary. The other ones write horribly.
Are you a people person? I’ve grown to be one over the years. I do like my alone time, but I have the most fun with a person or two or ten around me.
Do you put pepper on your scrambled eggs? No. I never use pepper myself, actually.
Who, except yourself, has the nicest pet? Angela’s, at least one of her dogs are. Hailey is super nice and she doesn’t really care what you do with her hahahaha.
What's your favourite piece of clothing? Right now, probably my IVP sneakers since they’re my newest purchase. Other than that, my mom jeans are always super reliable.
What place have you gone to that you never would again? Police stations that I had to visit to cover stories for my journalism classes. Maybe it’s other people’s passion – and I thought it was mine at one point, too – but once I found myself in places like that I slowly realized that I didn’t have the fire for journalism I once thought I had.
What do others seem to have plenty of and you have little or none? Nice photos of themselves. I’m very camera shy.
Is pink a nice colour, an okay colour or icky? I personally love pink, so.
Give me a description of a great film plotline? ...I don’t feel like it :(( I also haven’t watched/rewatched any films in a while, so my memory is a bit rusty.
What do you have in your pockets? Nothing I’m wearing right now has pockets.
Do you listen to podcasts? Not really. I’m part of the minority that finds podcasts a little boring.
Have you ever played Poker? I’d guess I’ve tried playing it one or two times, but I’ve never understood the rules and I probably just did some random moves when I did try it.
Do you have a pond in your garden? No.
How about a swimming pool? We don’t.
Do you like Poptarts? I loooooove Pop Tarts and I wish we had more flavors here :( and that they weren’t so expensive.
Do you write notes on post-it notes? Sometimes; but lately I’ve mostly just been making to-do lists on my laptop. Writing takes too much time considering how hectic my job is.
Quiet darling, shh. - Q
Do you ever use the word quaint? Very rarely. I never really get into situations where that word would be most fitting to use.
Do you know what quantum physics is? I know of the term from watching The Big Bang Theory, but I don’t know what it refers to.
Are you a quiet or loud person? Depends on the people I’m with, my general mood, and my level of comfort.
Do you usually ask a lot of questions? I never do. I feel like that’s a weakness of mine, too. My mind never wanders too far, and I’m only able to recognize good questions when someone else raises them.
What's your favourite quote from a film? “Rome. By all means, Rome.”
Favourite quote from a song? “Now I’m told this is life, and pain is just a simple compromise so we can get what we want out of it.”
Are you quick witted? In what aspect? Not always; but yeah, I guess it comes out sometimes. I’m pretty good at witty or funny comebacks, especially with people I’m comfortable with.
Do you find the word queer offensive? Er, no?
Roses are Red and Romance is dead. - R
Do you listen to the radio often? I used to, since I once drove to school everyday and I liked having the radio on - especially in the morning, since there was a morning program I was hooked to. But now that I’m at home 24/7, I don’t really tune in anymore; I don’t even have the slightest clue what songs are trending rn.
Do you prefer rain or snow? We only get rain, so.
Have you ever ran into someone and injured you or them due to it? Fortunately no, for both circumstances.
Do you listen to rap music? K-Pop groups always have their own rap sub-unit, so yeah I’ve definitely been more exposed to rap these days.
Do you find pet rats gross or nice? Why? I guess it’s cute when they’re pets, since I’m sure they’re harmless. Not so much when they’re big black filthy rats that are house pests and probably carrying a lot of diseases.
Have you ever been to a rave? No. I’d love to experience it once.
Are you somewhat of a rebel? Nah.
How about reckless? Now this hits the spot more, especially when it comes to money lol
Do you prefer red, black or purple dresses? Black, then red, then purple. I don’t wear a lot of the latter to begin with.
Do you know how to reload a gun? I don’t; I’ve never even held a real gun before.
Do you remember your first best friends Mum's name? I don’t think I ever met her mom. Our friendship was super short-lived and didn’t go beyond preschool.
Do you have a good or a bad reputation? Idk, you’d have to ask other people for this I think.
What song do you request most often on the radio? I’ve never requested a song to radio stations.
Do you prefer rice or tofu? I need rice for literally every meal, otherwise it won’t feel filling. I like tofu too, but I only have it occasionally when it comes with some dishes.
Have you ever held a rifle? Nope.
Do you know a Robert? What's he like? I have an uncle-in-law named Robert. He’s very nice, and super intelligent; he’s from New Zealand but currently lives with my aunt and their family in Vietnam. Since he’s from a different country, he has lots of fun stories and different perspectives to share at family reunions, which makes me always want to sit at whichever table he’s at so that I can be part of interesting conversations.
Do you like rollercoasters? No.
Been to Rome, Italy? Nope.
Are Roses your favourite flower? They’re one of them.
So sweetheart, lets fan. - S
Do you feel safe in your neighbourhood? Yeah, I mean that’s kind of the whole point in living in a gated village. I’d be pretty alarmed if I ever hear of a crime happening here.
Whose the Patron Saint of your Country? St. Lorenzo Ruiz. I actually didn’t know that for a fact, so thanks for the Google search and impromptu lesson!
Do you put salt on your fries? Yessssssss, I need my fries to be very salty. Unless it was already seasoned with something else, I’d find it boring if it wasn’t salty enough.
Do you think we are all born the same? In some ways, yes; in some ways, no. I know everyone is born as humans worthy of love and respect, but when it comes to factors like privilege then that’s when circumstances start to get all different.
When did you stop believing in Santa? I never bought it. I used to always get frustrated that I was never allowed to meet Santa (none of my relatives ever played as him), and that he apparently just likes to leave gifts at midnight. Not seeing a Santa made me doubt and eventually I just kinda stopped buying it by the time I was like 5.
Do you think the name Sarah is pretty? Erm, it’s fine but I find it a little common.
Is Saturday your favourite day of the week? Fridays are, but Saturdays are a very close second.
Have you ever watched Saved By The Bell? Opinions? Nope.
What about the Saw films? Opinion? I haven’t, but I know they’re my eldest cousin’s favorite so it must be a good series.
Are you easily scared? In certain ways. I hate jumpscares for one, and I easily get offended by them.
What's your secondary language, if any? English.
Name all the things you can see from where you're sitting? The entirety of my bedroom.
What's the last sentence you spoke out loud? “JAY KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY”
Have you changed your default settings on your computer? Some of them just to change some aspects of the appearance, but I didn’t do a complete overhaul.
What year did you turn seven in? 2005.
How important is sex in a relationship how important is sex from 1-10? For me, probably like a 3 or 4.
What is your favourite shade of blue? Sky or royal.
Shade of Purple? BTS purple, I guess? Hahaha.
Favourite shape? I don’t have one.
Do you know a girl called Sharon? Nope.
How about Shari? Nope.
Do you shave your arms, legs, pubic hair and/or somewhere else? I shave, but not all of these areas.
When was the last time you were sick? May 2020 was the last time I felt like death.
What's the worst side effects you've had due to a medication? I’ve never gone through side effects from a medication.
What does your signature look like? A very lazy scribble of the first and last letters of my whole name.
Do you like silk? What do you own that is silk? It’s okay, but I never actively search for it. I have one set of silk pajamas but that’s it.
Do you sip or drink hot drinks fast? As much as possible I don’t like getting in contact with hot beverages. I wait for them to cool down considerably before I take my first sip.
How about with alcohol? Sure, I like to take them fast so that I don’t feel the nasty burn on my tongue.
Do you have sisters? How many, what ages and what're they called? Nina is turning 21 this year.
Is your grandmother older than sixty five? Both of them are, yeah.
Do you slam doors often? Nope.
Have you ever slapped someone in the face? For what reason? Yes. Because he had slapped me first. I was in so much shock that my first and only instinct was to hit back.
Do you snack a lot or just eat big meals? I like letting myself go hungry then reward myself with a very generous serving to eat in one go.
Do you smile more often, or frown? Smile.
Are you wearing socks? No, I haven’t worn any in a while.
Do you say sorry too often? Yes.
What's a sound that always soothes you? This. I always play it before turning in, or when I need to calm down.
Do you carry a lot of spare change? How much is on you now? Not so much anymore, since I’ve been increasingly going cashless.
Do you own a swimsuit of the Speedo brand? I don’t think so.
Do you like sunflowers? They have a personal meaning to me, so yes. It’s not my ultra favorite, though.

Idk what I’m doing lol... but life’s a mess
Back in the day I wrote out my entire life story and it gave me a lot of clarity and resolve. Nearly a decade later, I am going to do the same in hopes that I find some self-healing. Perhaps I can also validate my feelings so I don’t feel like I am entirely crazy for feeling the way I feel. FYI for those who know me, please note that (to my knowledge) I have removed my pictures and mentions of my name from this blog and do not wish to be identified at this moment. I would appreciate it if you could respect that.
I’m going to start all the way back in 2010. I came out as gay while I was in high school. I was met with a wave of support and love from students and faculty, except for a select few homophobes. However, if I thought they were bad, things were about to get much worse.
In early July 2010, I was awakened by my mother at 3am in the morning. This was very unusual, and the look on her face was one of pain and grief. She led me into a secluded room of the house where my uncle (her brother) sat waiting, my phone placed on the counter in front of him. My mom and father and gotten divorced after an abusive marriage, and we had moved in with my uncle and his family when I was 11 years old. Therefore, my uncle was a father figure for me.
I was made to sit down in between them, and the interrogation began. They had gone through my phone and found texts I sent to my friends, talking about my sexuality, and they claimed that they had also found out through the grapevine. I was yelled at by my uncle. He asked perverse and inappropriate questions about my sexuality, with dramatic monologues about how I am bringing shame to our immaculate family name that would put some of Bollywood’s most melodramatic moments to shame. All this occurred while my mother sat and silently weeped. Two hours of emotional and verbal abuse later I was sent back to bed.
The next morning, my uncle took my mom and disappeared for hours. Turns out they had gone to the doctor to discuss my situation, and a wave of relief washed over me. “Thank God,” I thought, “at least this person will see reason.”
I was wrong.
My uncle and mother came back hours later and took me with them to the car. My uncle leading, me behind him, and my mother closing in on me behind me. This would be the formation that would take place if we ever stepped out from here on out. For the next week, I had no cell phone, no access to the landline, no computer, no internet, all my friends were gone away for the summer - I was completely isolated.
Anyway, they drove me to the doctor’s office in the late afternoon, which I found odd because the office would have been closed by now. Sure enough, when we arrived at the clinic, there was a “Closed” sign on the door. However, my uncle opened it and lead me inside, with my mother following after me.
I was taken straight through the empty clinic - even the receptionist had gone home, so there was no record of my visit - and I was led into the doctor’s office, where he sat waiting for me. I walked in alone and the door was shut behind me.
What followed was a series of pseudo-scientific explanations as to how I’m mentally ill, disturbed and perverted. “This is a sickness,” he said. “God didn’t intend you to be this way.”
He added that this was probably because I don’t maintain a relationship with my father and was raised by a single mother, and I just need to “learn to be a man.” “And if you like anal sex, you know you can do that with a woman too you know?”
I was dejected. Destraught. Absolutely destroyed on the inside. A person I thought to be a voice of reason, was spewing the same judgemental ignorant rhetoric my uncle was. The irony makes me laugh though nine years later, because this year his wife discovered that he had been sleeping with a patient for the past several years. What a morally strong man…
The rest of the week is a bit of a blur. I disassociated myself for most of it. However the gist of it was my uncle interrogated me to see who I had sex with, my mother became suicidal, and my uncle became homicidal.
At one point he made explicit threats to my life, and I had to do an internal inventory. I can’t afford to run away and live on my own, I don’t want my mom to die, and I don’t want to get killed. So, I bit the bullet and basically faked a “recovery” to keep the peace. I had had enough of the emotional and mental abuse and manipulation from my uncle and just wanted some reprise.
I have a cousin I am extremely close with who I am out to. He lives out of province, and he was and is the biggest ally I have in my life. When he found out what was happening to me, he called my uncle. My uncle said something that concerned him, so he told me to fly out and stay with him for the duration of the summer until it was time for me to go back to school.
I did so and it was an amazing time. However, during that trip I also learned of how twisted my uncle’s brain truly was. He had told my cousin multiple ways in which he wanted to “deal with the mess” including murder, forced re-allocation and isolation, and he even wanted to hire a female sex worker to come rape me.
That stunned me, and I have never had a proper relationship with my uncle since.
Years went by, and it appeared as though the situation had been swept under the rug. My plan was to save up enough to one day pack my bags and leave, never to look back again. My mother and uncle were super close and he could have easily taken care of her in my absence.
That plan, however, was put on halt when the elders in the family decided that my mother should finally have a house of her own, a dream she had always had but never experienced. However, that would not be possible if I didn’t step up and help pay a portion of the mortgage. In actuality, I was given no choice either, so I put a stone on my heart and sacrificed my personal freedom so I could give my mother the comfort she deserves.
During the construction of the house though, everything went to shit. One day at the job site, a construction worker made fun of my more gentle mannerisms and began to make homophobic jokes. My uncle overheard and that was just the fodder he needed to begin making my life a living hell all over again.
From early 2016 until today, my uncle has been emotionally and mentally abusing me and anyone who will stick up for me. My mother would defend me, and he began to emotionally and mentally abuse her too.
I am stuck in the shittiest circumstance. My uncle and mother are waiting with bated breath to see what I do next.
My mother wants me to get married to a woman, something I will never do. My uncle WANTS me to flat out come out so he can further torture me verbally and/or physically, and make a spectacle out of my mother for having the audacity to speak up against his abusive tendencies.
And I honestly don’t know what the fuck I should do. On one hand, I refuse to marry a woman to please society. On the other hand, when I come out, my mother will want to have nothing to do with me, and with me gone, my uncle (and my aunt has joined the squad now) will have free reign to torture and harrass my mother. On top of that my mom won’t be able to make payments for the house, the house will be foreclosed, and my mom and sister will be forced to live on the streets, or move back in with my abusive uncle.
Just this past week while I was out of the house, my uncle came over to taunt my mother, because he knows he's emotionally vulnerable and won’t stick up for herself. He came over and told her that she’s basically unwanted and uncared for. That the people around her are going to treat her like a laughing stock. That no one is society will talk to her or say anything good about her because her son is a fag who will ruin the family izzat.
Izzat is something he is HELLBENT about. Back in the day when my mom was about to start college, he cornered her before she was about to leave the house and said “No one knows you for who you are, they know you as my sister. So if you fuck around with any guys whatsoever, I’m going to slit your throat and kill myself.” *slow clap for the amazing pep talk*
I am fucking exhausted. For the past nine years I have been surviving, not living. I go day in day out afraid for my life, afraid for what the future holds for my mother and sister. I’m afraid that something may happen to me, and no one will know and he will continue to live his life showing himself to be this perfect human who can never do any wrong.
However, I refuse to let that happen. Even if it’s the last thing I do, one day I am going to expose him and his truth to the world. He taunted my mother saying no one will care for her? Everyone is going to remember my mother for the beautiful soul that she is. It’s HIM that is going to be shunned by society for being the manipulative abusive psychopath that he is.
Everything is going to be made public one day. Crystal clear. Bright as day. I will make an example out of him, that if you around manipulating and abusing people for your little-man-syndrome/false pride, this is how you will be publicly disgraced and humiliated.
Until then, I need to go seek therapy, heal myself, and get ready to fight for not just my life, but for the sake of my mother and my sister. I had finally gotten to a point where I was actually excited to wake up in the morning. But now I’m back in that mental hole where when as soon as I wake up a wave of dread sweeps over me and I wish I hadn’t woken up. I would be lying if I said I have a will to live. However, I also refuse to do anything that would put my mother at risk for more abuse.
The thing that frustrates me the most is that while all this happened, NOTHING changed in my life. My struggle remained the same. As people zoom by me in life, getting amazing opportunities, running businesses, finding amazing life partners, just living their best life, I’m standing here like my legs are stuck in a block of cement. Feeling like I’m broken, lost, unworthy, unlovable, undesirable, and a failure.
Until I can do something, I could really use all the prayers I could get.
