b/zzfeed is a cheesball website but they posted this really lazy “steal tweets because we don’t know how to think of an original thought ourselves” article and i’m just. it’s a new level of laziness, so here are some responses!
https://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/questions-about-christmas?utm_source=dynamic&utm_campaign=bftwbuzzfeed&ref=bftwbuzzfeed
1. Why do americans send xmas cards with their family photo? -- It’s literally just a way to send photos of your family to your other family. That’s it.
2. Why do americans send xmas cards to “literally everyone”? -- Sometimes people are nice and want to wish others well.
3. Why do americans decorate their xmas tree using “ALL of their belogingings??????” -- It’s fun.
4. Do americans actually go to houses to carol? -- Yes, some people do. It’s a nice show of community to share songs with your neighbors and say hi, wish each other well, then move on. I did it once in middle school and it was fun.
5. Do americans staple xmas lights to their roofs? -- I have no idea, probably? I’ve never hung lights on the outside of my house, but staples makes sense I guess. We decorate our roofs because it looks nice.
6. Do americans treat thanksiginvg “like a warm up for xmas dinner” or is it different? -- It’s different because they’re different holidays. One is an autumn harvest dinner, the other is religious or winter-y.
7. Do americans have thanksgiving films? -- SHRUG EMOJI Not any that are “big,” I don’t think. And we don’t... hide our films?? If there are, you could probably find them on youtube or through a VPN like all other foreign films.
8. How do americans wear stilletos in 10ft of snow?! -- “#yesiknowitsamovie” you answered your own question (no one does, or very carefully and with lots of regret)
9. Why are there so many movies about marrying royalty? -- I see you found Hallmark. It’s just a trope they like, pretty classic Cinderella stuff.
10. Do americans stand around a piano caroling? -- I’m sure some families sit down at an instrument if they have it and sing and laugh together, yes. Some families like each other.
11. Do americans call their MIL “mom”? -- Some do? This is sort of an individual basis thing, so... I’ve met people who don’t and people who do.
12. Do americans buy real trees for xmas? -- As opposed to fake, I guess is the implication? People do both, depending on their preference, households, and financial situations.
13. Do americans call hot chocolate “hot cocoa” -- Dialectical. Sometimes we really go off the rails and just call it “cocoa” too
14. Do americans put up their xmas tree on xmas eve? -- I’ve never met a single person that does this, but I’m sure some do? Most people put it up the weekend after Thanksgiving or the first week/two of December.
15. Do americans bake their neighbors cookies? -- Again, some people are nice and just like sharing things with their community? Are non-americans okay?? A lot of these tweets seem surprised by basic generosity or manners and I’m not even an american that’s close with my neighbors???
16. Why do americans decorate with popcorn? -- I have no idea, I’ve never done this. I’m sure there’s a traditional reason you could google
17. Why do americans celebrate christmas twice? wtf is thanksgiving? -- These are two separate holidays, separated by an entire month’s worth of time. Thanksgiving has shitty origins but it’s mostly just a fall foods dinner at this point. I’m not sure why non-americans think these two are the same holiday? (Not that they need to know the nuance of foreign holidays, but this seems to be a weird assumption that another country just... randomly celebrates the same thing twice???)
18. Why do americans match outfits in a xmas photo and then send it? “We have social media now.” -- Social media did not... always exist? And it was a fun, cute way to keep up with your relatives/friends and wish them well? Are y’all okay???
19. Why do americans call xmas sweaters “ugly sweaters”? -- This probably started as a joke in the 19th or 18th century, except now socially people love tacky, gaudy clothes so it sort of lost its meaning. Now people use the term affectionately and find cute designs or silly baubles to joke around about.
20. Why do americans insist on calling xmas “the holidays”? -- Some people try to be cognizant that there are other holidays in December.
21. How do americans start celebrating xmas on nov 1st when they have thanksgiving to go? -- Some people just like christmas and the winter season more, like how some people get excited for halloween in august.
22. Do americans really put pickles in their xmas tree? -- do we do WHAT
23. Why do americans make ugly sweaters for xmas? -- I genuinely don’t know the origin, please just use google. At this point it’s just a joke
24. How do americans handle the holidays being so close together? Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas? -- TELL ME ABOUT IT, DUDE. We just ended up having 3 big holidays in a row. It happens.
25. Do americans consider the day after Thanksgiving to be the start of xmas? -- Yes, some people do. Some think Nov 1, others think Dec 1. ~Individuality~
26. Do americans send family xmas cards with their picture on it? -- Buzzfeed really hittin the bottom of the barrel with like 3 tweets about this, huh.
