SO IT’S WORTH POINTING OUT I BEAT CADENCE OF HYRULE + OCTAVO’S ODE TODAY AND I HAD SOME FEELINGS TM ABOUT IT.
This was me freaking out to a friend immediately after seeing the final cutscene (and wasn’t the full extent of my freakout, either, aha - it ended up being a total of 14+ pages long in a Google Doc because I explained to him at length some of the symbolism in the game and also because I may have just completely lost my goshdang marbles over some aspects of what happened).
No spoilers but this is legitimately one of the best Zelda-related games I’ve ever flipping played! I’m still trying to figure out exactly where I’d rank it on my list for Zelda games (I'm gonna consider it a Zelda game because even though the gameplay is not, the story most certainly is).
Right now my ranking for the Zelda franchise is in this order:
1. Majora's Mask 2. The Minish Cap 3. The Wind Waker 4. A Link Between Worlds
(For the record - I’ve played or own a good majority of the Zelda games. Actually I think there’s only 3 that I don’t own? These are just my top favorites, personally.)
And, as I mentioned to my friend (off-screen), this might be on-part with The Minish Cap for me, which is really saying something because The Minish Cap is the one that has Vaati in it. Anyone who’s really close to me probably knows this, but Vaati is one of three of my favorite fictional characters of all time, and he’s the very first fictional character I ever got extremely strongly attached to, so he holds an especially important place in my heart. Therefore? For me to be comparing it to The Minish Cap is high praise indeed if that puts it into perspective for anyone. I really, really, really like Octavo a lot.
The gameplay is super solid? As is the OST that accompanies it? Like I legitimately really think the gameplay alone was a delight; I know it’s probably not everyone’s thing, but oh my gosh I love the gameplay holy frick. The storyline is so on point, too? And it actually hits right on the notes (pun intended) of some things that matter an awful lot to me on a super personal basis, so I just... I can’t even express how much love I now have for this game, and the developers who made it.
And the character development for Octavo was absolutely stellar. COH was originally released on June 13, 2019, but the free DLC for Octavo’s Ode was released on December 18, 2019 - that’s just about 3-4 months ago! WHERE HAS THIS GAME BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Again no spoilers but: THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE. THIS IS THE ZELDA GAME I’VE BEEN WAITING A LIFETIME FOR. I cannot express how impressed I am with its story. I really, really, really liked this game a lot.
EDIT:
Oh also. Pixel art is like my favorite type of art to be really honest (and for those of you that don’t know, it’s the style I started out with as an artist because many of the older, pixelated games like Fire Emblem are what inspired my art journey), so I think this game is super gorgeous. It has some. Utterly glorious pixel art. Hm yes I love. Everything about this game. Yes I do.
EDIT 2:
Consider this your warning to blacklist #coh spoilers in the case you don’t want COH spoilers because I have added one to my queue now. :’)
