Burberry Brand Power

Burberry’s brand can be qualified as a strategic resource for three primary reasons: the brand is hard to copy, it’s controlled by the company, and it demonstrates strong brand durability. From the Burberry case, it is evident that Burberry’s brand is a mechanism by which the company increases willingness to pay and creates value. This value has primarily been captured by retail-led growth and a focus on non-apparel products. The catalyst for this growth can be found in the way that Burberry positions its brand to both classically minded, aristocratic consumers as well as young and trendy consumers. Burberry’s SVP of Marketing stated that “We wanted Burberry to represent ‘accessible luxury.’ What separated us from other luxury brands was our functionality—a trench coat has a purpose, to keep you warm and dry. So our point of difference was that we were aspirational, but also functional.” I postulate this as the driving force behind Burberry’s success between 1997-2003.

Burberry’s brand is hard to copy, because it is rooted in path dependency: the company’s unique English heritage that includes its proprietary logo, historical association with Hollywood stars and royalty, and trademarked check fabric, was built over time in ways that are difficult to replicate. Burberry is able to command a higher price for items because of its company heritage. While Burberry typically prices lower to other luxury brands, it is able to find a price niche between Polo Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani in clothing and between Coach and Gucci in accessories. Even still, because of its strong history, Burberry as able to price its classic trench coat at a 32% premium relative to its other clothing products (London Business School Case Study).

Burberry’s brand is controlled by the company. CEO, Rose Marie Bravo realizes that the brand is losing some of its perception and revenue value due to excessive licensing deals and counterfeits that result in diminished returns from wholesalers. Their retail-oriented strategy since then has recaptured a major share of this lost value.

Burberry has strong brand durability, as an enduring player in the luxury goods sector for over 150 years. Brand durability tests if a brand can sustain its value over time and avoid depreciation. While Burberry emerged as a luxury brand in the 1850s, by the 1990s the price, design and quality of products varied across markets. Despite this, the brand was demonstrably durable, as Burberry was able to regain control in the early 2000s by limiting licensing deals, establishing different product lines, and expanding its brand portfolio (Burberry London, Thomas Burberry, Prorsum).
