How do you deal with your dad's PTSD? (John)

Well, it isn't always a problem, but sometimes it can be... when something happens that reminds him of the war and other things of the like. Typically, I try to help, though there isn't really much I can actually do.

Prompt: John has a bad PTSD day. Sherlock helps.

John stared blankly at the newspaper in his hands, while a cup of bitter coffee grew cold in front of him. He could make no meaning of the words. The pages seemed empty, grey, just like the overcast morning.

The door slammed downstairs. The violent snap of a gunshot. John’s heart jolted into his fragile chest and he fell back into the cushion, defeated.

He begged for sleep. Just a moment of peace. It was all he needed.

"John! There’s another case!" Sherlock called. He eagerly jumped into his seat "Another convenient store clerk has been kidnapped and-"

But he quickly noticed the heavy circles under John’s eyes and the familiar look on his face. He softened.

"-You’re remembering..." he said.

John would not look at him. “I can’t ever forget.”

"Let me help you." He stood up. His voice was sweet. "The case can wait. Just stay there and try to relax." Sherlock disappeared, and just moments later, reappeared with his violin.

"I've been composing," he said. The bow slid kindly over the strings and a slow, gentle melody filled the room. "You're no doubt aware of the therapeutic benefits of a well-played instrument."

His baritone voice mixed pleasantly with the mid-range tune on the violin, and John immediately felt a flood of warmth wash through his tense limbs. He nodded.

"Close your eyes, John. Let's see if I can put you to sleep."

John's eyelids fell and his limbs loosened almost immediately. It was effortless. And this time, he did not imagine violent gunshots and falling bodies in the hot dusty desert. Instead, the sound from Sherlock's violin conjured colorful waves that washed over him like a rolling tide. The music slowly dissolved into sleep.

When Sherlock was positive he'd succeeded, he set his violin away and rested his hand over John's, watching him fondly.

"War has not been kind to you," he said quietly. "But I'll never let it get to you again. I promise."

Yes, I do! And it makes me very sad that daddy gets stressed and upset and scared when he gets a… papa calls them flashbacks. But when daddy feels better I always give him lots of cuddles so he feels better! -HWH
