i unironically got invested in this HELP

y’all i cannot express in words how excited i am for the new lumberjanes show to come out. 

i know a lot of folks on tumblr are hearing abt lumberjanes for the first time through the news tv show, but it’s based on a bunch of comics by lgbt creators, and those comics have helped me work through so much difficult stuff, and i don’t think it’d be a stretch to say that lumberjanes (and the current fandom around it) has actually saved my life. 

lumberjanes is a comic about a bunch of girls who go to a summer camp and solve mysteries and fight monsters and just hang out together and are best friends, and i love it so much. right off the bat, two girls are lesbians in a loving, healthy, caring relationship. the camp director is a butch lesbian. another girl is trans and her arc has nothing to do with being trans - she’s just one of the girls, and she’s trans too, and it’s part of her identity but she never experiences suffering around it. later on she helps a young nonbinary character realize that they’re nonbinary, and then the nonbinary character gets to join the girls at camp, and they’re so much happier there. there’s an entire section of panels about pronouns, but it’s juts a casual discussion, where one girl says, “what’re pronouns” and another says, “oh, they’re just words we use to describe ourselves, like ‘he/him’ and ‘they/them’ and ‘she/her’” and then the nonbinary character says “i'd like to use they/them pronouns please” and everyone accepts them. there are so many characters of color. there are so many diverse family groups (something we see in an arc where all of the parents get to visit their kids at camp for a day) including a girl who only has a mom, and a girl who has two dads, and a girl who has a mom and a dad and whose abuela lives with her family, and big families and small families and lots of siblings and only children. 

and lumberjanes is so sweet. it’s complex and well-written and absolutely hilarious, but it’s also so sweet and kind and soft and reading it feels like being hugged and handed a plate of homemade cookies. it’s about friendship and the complexities that entails. the entire motto fo the camp the girls go to is ‘friendship to the max’ and the story reflects that. and the girls get to be loud and goofy and wacky and wild, which is something we don’t see a lot in media. and they get to be soft and scared and sad, too, and then they get to grow from these experiences, and they get to learn and explore and be free. and that’s something i'd never really seen before, not represented in such an honest way. reading lumberjanes set me free. i found these comics in early middle school, when i was going through a really hard time both socially and with my own personal identity. i live in the bible belt, and i go to a school that isn’t accepting of lgbt kids at all. i'd recently been outed to my grade as lesbian by one of the girls in half of my classes, and in the meantime i was also dealing with my own personal gender struggles, specifically waves and waves of dysphoria that i was having a hard time understanding and defining, because i knew i didn’t want to be a girl or a boy, but i had no idea what that meant, and i had no idea that there was a third option, or a fourth option, or a fifth option, or thousands of options, because i didn’t really get the fluidity of gender, yet, and i didn’t understand that i could apply it to myself. but then i saw the characters in lumberjanes, i saw girls who loved girls and were proud of it, so incredibly proud of it, i saw kids who were realizing they didn’t identify with the gender binary and that they didn’t have to, and i do truly think that saved me. because there was a time when i was considering just ending it because i didn’t understand. and then i read lumberjanes, and it saved me.

and those are just the comics - the current fandom surrounding them has been so loving and caring and supportive of me ever since i joined it. we’re small - there’s only maybe forty of us, and the number of us who are actually content creators is so much smaller. when i first joined the fandom, we only had maybe twenty fics on ao3. now we have 93. i’m proud to say i’ve written fifteen of those, and i'm so, so happy to have found and talked with the people who’ve written the other 78. last year, when i started engaging with other lumberjanes fans online through tumblr, discord, and even the ao3 comments section, i was going through a really difficult time at school. it was my first year in high school and it was like the homophobia and transphobia were amped up to 200%, and people who i thought loved me left me, and so many of my closest friends had to leave the school to save themselves, and i felt so incredibly alone. so i said “fuck it” and i made a discord account and i started talking to some people i’d spent years admiring from afar. i spent hours goofing around with them, discussing fan theories and fanfiction and working through my personal life with them by my side. now, i consider them my friends. and i’ve picked myself back up again. i've figured myself out, for the most part, and i've got new friends and i’m staying in touch with old ones, and school is still awful now and again, but i have people who have my back. they saved me, and i don’t know if they know it, but they did. this fandom saved me. i love them so much. 

now, the lumberjanes show is coming out, and i'm so incredibly excited. the comics are niche. they don’t reach as many people. i know so many kids who are intimidated by comics, but don’t really know where to start, or who want to read them, but are scared their parents could find them. i understand that struggle. hiding a book is hard. you have to look for a space that you know no one can get to, under a bed or in a closet or in plain sight, with the cover of another book slipped over it. and so often, the risk isn’t worth it.

but hiding a bootlegged file of a tv show? that can be so much easier. 

i'm so excited to hear that noelle stevenson and possibly even other lumberjanes creators are going to be working on this show. i think that it will change lives, like the comics changed my lives. lumberjanes is a story about girls loving adventure, loving mysteries, loving each other. it’s beautiful and positive and uplifting, and in my case, lifesaving. i urge you all to please check out the comics. you won’t regret it. and please, support the show.

so her parent’s story was actually a pretty big scandal in the 90′s ! basically theo’s mom was the pretty famous front woman of a band ( think stevie nicks in fleetwood mac ) who was long engaged to the guitarist of that same band....until one day it was announced she was quitting the group and starting her solo career, leaving her fiance, and signing to a new label.....which was run by theo’s father, a young up & coming producer taking over the family business. not even three months later theo’s mom releases her first solo album, produced and co-written by theo’s father, basically detailing this years long affair the two had been having... in a series of really catchy, moving, and wildly successful songs. 

the public went crazy over the drama, especially when rumors started circulating ( through detailed analysis of the lyrics to all of theo’s mom’s solo songs ) that the well known band had actually been quite toxic. basically it was enough to convince media outlets and fans alike to forgive theo’s parents for being cheaters and breaking up the band JSDBWBDJWBD. by the time theo was born in the last year of the iconic decade that launched both her parents into stardom, everyone couldn’t be happier the two stars were getting the happy life they deserved <3

so here comes baby theo.....and the world kind of just immediately labels her as america’s sweetheart. her mom had some minor health issues which just meant it would be safer to not have anymore kids after theo, so not only was she this little angel to the public, she was also her parent’s little miracle baby ! lets just say she had some big shoes to fill bc of all the expectations ..

luckily no one had to worry abt her being a demon child JSBDJWDWJ because she turned out to be a very sweet kid ! she was a HUGE daydreamer since she spent a lot of time alone growing up </3 her mom had retired from singing and was now helping theo’s dad run the label, and the two of them were always busy looking for new talent to sign. she didn’t have any siblings and although she had a really attentive nanny it just .. wasn’t the same ?? so to #Cope JSBDWBSBDJW theo was always creating these super elaborate little fantasy worlds. it wasn’t uncommon for u to find her deeply engrossed playing barbies alone like she had scripts and everything 

by the time she was a preteen her parents were both really pressuring theo into thinking about a singing career, so wanting to please them ( and knowing that it was something she was kinda into anyway ) theo said ok sure ! and that’s where.....things start to take a turn. since she was so young she had this very very clean, innocent, cute image ( think disney stars ) & most of the music she was making was used for kids shows or movies. she didn’t really mind it so much but she noticed that her creative process wasn’t really valued ? or taken very seriously by her parents, because in their eyes like that’s their kid you know she’s still young, she’s always had her head in the clouds, they just really didn’t think it was a big deal if they took control. 

so theo put up with it, but the years kept going by, she kept getting older, and nothing was really changing. she still had a squeaky clean image, little say in the type of music she was making, but on the outside everything looked great. the public loved her, she was a role model for kids ( even though she was a teenager now ), it was all perfect.....until it wasn’t. when she was 16, she had a scandal akin to the vanessa hudgen’s nude photo leak, except it wasn’t as explicit ( not a nude, just a suggestive pic ) and it was way way worse considering theo was a minor. 

legal action was immediately taken by her parents, but once something’s out there you can’t really stop it from circulating, so the photos existed, just not on any official media sites. it was traumatizing for theo having her privacy breached like that, especially because instead of talking about how disgusting it was that someone would leak those photos when she was just a teen, gossip sites & fans alike were too busy talking about how her image was ruined. since she’d had such a clean, innocent reputation, people kinda forgot that... she was an actual person going through life growing up, and that she wasn’t perfect. 

theo, being the optimist she is, was like hey you know what? this is my chance to stop making music i dont love. after what was probably her first truly honest convo with her parents, they agreed she should be free to figure herself and her art out. so for the remainder of her teenage years theo fell off the face of the music world....

only to pop back up in the modeling one ! like most celebrities, social media had a big say in this. since reputation wasn’t something theo had going for her anymore, what she did have was a hell of a following still and two famous parents ( not to mention ... shes tall JSBDJWBDWJ ) she did maybe one runway show before deciding she hated that. tbh she hated any modeling that felt too constricting, which is why she never ended up doing anything for big names & mostly does stuff for foreign brands & magazines. 

she liked how much aesthetics had to do with modeling, and to some extent being a part of shoots satisfied that creative itch she had, but music was always her first love. theo really wanted to go back and revisit it, but she was scared the public’s reaction wouldn’t be what she hoped /: 

so following in her mother’s footsteps, theo’s re entrance into the music scene was an ep ( 100% written, produced, edited, you name it, by her ) she released on the eve of her 18th bday basically explaining everything she went through with art. it was only four songs + an interlude, which would become the most talked about part of the whole thing because it was snippets of various reporters talking about that photo leak.

the public had mixed feelings ! unlike with what happened with her parents, not everyone was ready to “forgive” theo. and since she hadn’t done any promo for her music, or for her career as an artist independent from her parent’s famous label, it wasn’t like she was making crazy money and getting all this recognition. but !! she was insanely insanely happy, and that’s when she realized making music wasn’t something she did for other people, just something she liked to share, so what did it really matter if she could be more famous if she was an artist under her parent’s label ?

nix grew up in hardcore suburbia in manchester, england. his parents were just sort of……….basic parents? attentive and loving but with issues of their own. he inherited anxiety and depressive disorders from both of them so his childhood was rough not because his parents didn’t try to be there for him (he had a lot of issues with his dad though) but bc his mental illnesses just made it hard to be a teenager (harder than usual fdhgsjsj). it led to a lot of drug abuse when he was in high school, and he was one of those kids where he was like really smart and did exceptionally well when he went to class so his teachers and his parents got on his case about it but he just wasn’t in the state of mind for giving a shit about school.

he and his friends got up to a lot of shit even when he was not in one of his depressive episodes just bc like it was boring suburbia and they had nothing better to do than drive around smoking weed and drinking beer. on the side nix was starting to get into pills and his friends were like *eyes emoji* but they were 16/17 so they didn’t rly know what to do about it ydgfuhjsa

he spent some time in an adolescent psychiatric ward of a hospital while he was in high school bc his parents were like okay something needs to be done !! and it didn’t really help. he did graduate high school, but it literally just took getting older and learning to deal with his mental shit to stop abusing drugs eventually. which did not happen fast

at 18 he went to New York by himself to attend NYU for music but dropped out in his second year when the band he and one of his friends had gotten together started getting actual attention on two eps they’d put out. his parents weren’t THRILLED bc they wanted him to have a degree (and they’d literally helped him pay for going to another country specifically for school purposes) but they were like really excited about the success so in that regard they were Cool with it. what they weren’t Cool with was how the shows and the lifestyle were conducive to his drug habits, of which they were very much aware (from all the way back in manchester) despite his trying to hide it and lie about.

so when he was 20 the band finally dropped their debut album and it was wildly successful and nix rly grew to have a toxic relationship with the career itself and the fame that came with it. the depression and anxiety were always still there and those random episodes he’d have on top of the pressure of doing shows and wanting to connect with his fanbase was what ultimately led him to doing harder drugs than pills, and it turned into a full on addiction. they almost broke up as a band a few times, his friend he started it with threatened to kick him out once, and there were multiple instances of him tweeting or saying insane shit while he was fucked up and then having to delete it later and pretend it never happened yguhkjksa

it was when they were in the middle of writing their second album (when he was 21) that nix finally hit rock bottom and checked himself into rehab (with the help of casey). he was there for three months, got sober, and for the first time he actually stayed that way a while.

so they finished the second album, it was just as successful, and by the time he was 23 they had a rly solid fan base and some international recognition and nix was still sober and things were relatively Good. he moved to miami when casey did bc he was like ok why tf not lmao and the whole ass band came to miami to start working on their third album. i imagine he dated a bit in this time, probably had one really healthy relationship for a while, and it was probably that relationship that got destroyed when he finally relapsed at 24 during an especially bad depressive episode that coincided with a big show for a festival. it was rly obvious he was high but it didn’t cause a scene or anything, people were just like hell yeah we’re all high it’s a festival lmao yeruhw but his friends and gf afterwards were like ??? hello !!! really ???!! so that was a thing again for a good 5 or 6 months until, once again, he hit a rly scary rock bottom and had to go to rehab.

and he got clean. again. and it stuck, again. he’s currently still clean and he and his band are working on their third album again yeet

personality

so nix is like…..a sensitive soul eryguhsja like yes he’s rly sarcastic and dry and can unintentionally come off as pretentious but he’s very personable and outgoing and just rly enjoys talking to people and like?? engaging in human interaction. when his anxiety gets really bad he’ll withdraw a lot and it’ll be really obvious and the same goes for the depression. when he’s having episodes, it’s like rly clear bc he’ll be moody and irritable and start reverting to bad habits

his favorite thing in the world is writing music bc he loves expressing his emotions and he feels like he does it best that way. so it’s also like rly meaningful to him when people like his music bc it’s like validation of himself and who he is yk

used to sleep around a lot and had an unhealthy relationship with that too especially when he was on drugs. now he like still enjoys it but doesn’t go out looking for it usually and would in general prefer a relationship probably ?? we’ll see

BACKSTORY

so miss niko was born in a teeny tiny suburban town in north carolina to a pair of  young high school sweethearts ! unfortunately her mom passed away during childbirth so it was a very bittersweet arrival into the world for baby niko

her dad was a mechanic who never made it to college since his girlfriend got pregnant towards the end of their senior year. they got married before niko was born though because they were pretty serious abt raising her right but they never really got the chance to /: but her dad loved his job he loved working with cars & it was something his own dad did before him plus it was a job the town really valued since it was so tiny ( u really only needed one of everything )

when i say tiny i mean everyone knows everyone tiny. growing up the town kinda pitied niko bc of her mom dying so to compensate everyone kinda tried to do their part in raising her ! her neighbors were just as much of a parent to her as her own dad was, and everyone had stories abt her mom so niko kinda appreciated how small the town was.....sometimes

that changed as she got older ! when she started high school her dad kinda entered a rough patch & started drinking more with his buddies, started working less, and niko started getting calls from the sheriff at 2 am like “hey we’re gonna keep ur dad for the night he didnt do anything crazy but he got a little too drunk u can pick him up tomorrow” sort of thing 

she was there for him every time but it got kinda overwhelming knowing everyone was in her family's business & how much kids would gossip at school or adults would give her sad looks

basically she kinda just....became very disillusioned with her reality & began to realize no one around her was really.....happy or had big dreams and their entire lives revolved around this tiny town which scared her

but also ? it had started becoming her life, too. she was voted prom queen senior year, she had a job at a diner where the same people ate everyday, she’d been dating the same boy for four years and everyone talked about how they’d probably get married soon. she’d become exactly like everyone else without even realizing it....she didnt have some big dream.....she didnt even have plans for college she was just so stuck

and then disaster hit the summer after she graduated high school. her dad had crashed right into a tree on a rainy night trying to drive home after a night out drinking & died on impact. the news honestly didnt feel real to her until her grandparents were helping her clear out her house so she could come move in with them 

which is when she finds her mom’s old diary ! and boy was that thing . fat & juicy ... it had all four years worth of her mom’s high school years inside and niko became ...obsessed with it. all she did that summer her dad died was read her mom’s old diary learning more abt the woman from those pages than she ever had from the mouths of everyone in her town

 thats how she found out her mom had always dreamed of moving to some city like seattle and starting this new life once she found out she was pregnant with niko ! so niko was like ok this has to be a sign....told her grandparents she loved them but she couldnt stay in north carolina.....and boop ! she pretty much disappeared from the town, didnt tie up any lose ends ( including her bf of four years who she was kinda engaged to ? JSDBJBDJ ) because she just had to leave that bad. 

cue a scene on bus with niko looking out the window as some dramatic song abt new beginnings plays . JSDBJSBDJW seattle was truly her new start at 18 ... and all she wanted to do was just ... reinvent herself 

so she did ! first thing she did was get a job as a waitress bc uh ur girl was BROKE broke but she knew she was good at serving. the first year was.....pretty rough there’s no sugar coating it niko was struggling bad, probably living in some questionable apartment when she wasnt coach hopping at her coworker’s places. despite all this she was....insanely happy she really believed ( and still does ) seattle is magic !

she was working at a diner ironically, just like she had been back home, but this diner changed her life about a two years ago. one day one of her regulars ( a very well off lawyer who worked downtown ) told her she was way too pretty and charming to be serving at a place like this & that he had a buddy who owned an upscale restaurant near his job downtown & that he could probably get niko a job there if she wanted

so she was like UH hell yes....showed up the next day at this fancy restaurant, charmed the pants off the owner, and the rest ? is history !  she moved into hideaways a bit after getting this new job & has been there ever since <3

PERSONALITY + TIDBITS

personality wise niko is kinda ....hard to figure out. she doesnt do it on purpose, she’s just still learning about who she is and what she really wants. back home in north carolina she was kind of the small town golden girl, loved by everyone type of deal but also very romanticized by those around her ??? ppl thought she was brilliant and knew so much about everything when the truth was she just knew a little about a lot. she would read to escape the suburban boredom of her reality & took a special interest in things like art and poetry and astronomy. shes the type to want to share the stuff she’s learned with those around her

in seattle since no one knew her the way they did back home, niko decided she wanted to keep it that way. because of this and because shes so hesitant to talk about her family sometimes she can come across as mysterious but she’s a surprisingly open person !! she’s naturally super curious and friendly and she’s found it really helps to be the kind of person people want to get to know and trust when working in the service industry. she’s got the type of aura about her that makes you feel as if maybe you’ve known her forever, even if she’s only told you one thing about herself ( which is often the case) . can probably make anyone feel at home within five minutes of talking to her & you won’t even realize how she’s doing it. her boss swears she’s charming enough to sell honey to a bee ! 

she’s also got a flighty side though that comes out when you get too close. niko’s great at relationships when they aren’t deep, but the moment you start and figure her out and see past the smiley walls she’s got up she recoils fast. in a way she’s terrified of anyone knowing too much about her because she’s scared that once they do they’ll pity her, and niko can’t stand being pitied. she’s also super good at dishing out affection but not so good at receiving it. the type to fall in love then right back out of love in one day. kinda a heart breaker bc of this but she doesn't mean to be, she just gets infatuated kinda easily & isn’t very good at keeping things serious ever since literally running away from her long-time ex in north carolina JSBCSJBDJW 

some fun facts: she wants to get a cat and name it cat so bad but she’s not sure she’d be a good pet mom so she just settles for petting stray cats in public. 100% that weirdo crouching in the street making kissy noises because she saw a cat and wants to pet it. she can name just about every constellation & loves to sit outside and look at the stars on clear nights, usually while smoking a joint . she’s a hardcore lightweight .... im talking one tequila shot and she’s floored ... two glasses of wine and she’s taking her top off  then crying kinda deal like she CANNOT handle her liquor so she tries to keep partying to a minimum. she’s got a collection of napkins from work were people have scribbled their phone numbers onto as well as a collection of napkins niko herself has scribbled on. she mostly writes poems and sometimes she even leaves a napkin with a poem on it behind at a table like a little gift for whoever sits there next. she’s probably always writing poems for all her friends or infatuations so if you’re in her life....you’ve gotten one at some point !

nathan harold zaleski iii was born ( practically with a pair of skates on ) in toronto, ontario. he’s third in a line of hockey royalty that started with his grandfather nathan i, in the 70s and 80s ( most notably with the montreal canadiens ), then continued with his father nathan ii, in the 90s and 00s ( most notably with the detriot red wings ). both were legendary defenseman in the nhl with several stanley cup wins and a olympic gold medals to their shared name.

so, no pressure right? nathan iii aka hal, has spent his entire life training to play hockey. he could skate before he ever knew how to walk and was taught how to hold a hockey stick before he was ever taught how to hold a pencil. he was barely homeschooled so that absolutely nothing would get in the way of his training in his formative years, casually had living legends coming over this house for dinner every other week, etc.

his parents divorced when he was ten years old, which he handled remarkably well for a kid his age but he honestly...couldn’t remember a time when his mother and father ever seemed genuinely happy or even as if they genuinely liked one another.

after the divorce and a messy custody battle, hal wound up staying with his dad, who was traded to the new york rangers on the very last leg of his career. his mom moved back to poland ( where she was from ) and he and his dad moved to nyc. a couple years later, when hal was twelve, his dad officially retired from the nhl and soon after married the mother of sabrina miller. she and hal hit it off right away and even though their parents would eventually divorce, the two are still close and hal still refers to her as his sister.

hal and his father attended the 2010 winter olympics in vancouver and because of who his dad was, he got to be all up close and personal with team canada which was equal parts thrilling and nerve - wracking, but overall he had a great time and after that experience, he became more serious than ever about hockey.

he went back to nyc after the olympics were over and, thanks to ages and ages of endlessly begging his dad, finally got to attend “a real school”.

it was there that he would meet isabel nichols, an accomplished figure skater who...absolutely hated his guts. at first. the two grew on one another and began dating, which eventually led hal to propose when they were uhhhh. seventeen

she was training for the sochi winter olympics and wound up breaking off their engagement during the actual games. isabel sorta dumped him w/o any explanation whatsoever so it kinda came out of nowhere for him, and this was basically the event that turned him into the fuckboy that we all know and begrudgingly tolerate today!

so idk how getting drafted into the nhl works bc idk anything abt sports and looking it up on google just confused me BUT what’s important here is that when hal was drafted into the nhl, he first played defense for the edmonton oilers before being traded to, again, play defense the new york rangers about which is where he still is now.

so around this time is when hal and his dad have a HUGE falling out. it had basically been building up since the day he was born so when it finally exploded...whew! all of the pressure that his dad has put him under his entire life, all of the pushing and prodding and nothing he ever did being good enough...it was allllllll thrown out there into the open and they’ve never really recovered from it. hal’s dad is basically just a big sore spot for him that he doesn’t really talk about. ever.

back to hockey, he’s still a big fan favorite and considered to be kind of a golden boy type despite being known for getting into fights on the ice and racking up endless penalties. it’s the kind of rebellious edge that people LIVE FOR. it also helps that he is, in fact, a really talented player.

injured his knee during a game in late march of 2019 and he was out for the rest of the season in order to recover which KILLED HIM he was MISERABLE but he’s been given the all clear to play once preseason starts and he’s so excited that he’s practically counting the s e c o n d s until september 18th

he’s technically married to genesis iver buuuut as far as 99% of people know, they’re engaged with their january wedding date on its way! their story is kinda Messy bc that’s their brand but basically friends to lovers to husband and wife and they’re v in love so it’s super sweet and all.

You sighed, watching as Vernon struggled with the tie around his neck. He had been particularly fidgety today, and you knew why. He was getting married today. It had been something that had been in the works for years now, his fiancee wanting to finish out her schooling and get her feet dug into a good position before she got married. Despite getting engaged in college at the prime age of twenty-one, he was only now tying the knot at twenty-six, five years later. You had been his best friend for many years, since high school when he accidentally kicked you in the face during gym and the rest was history, as people liked to say. He was excited to find someone so like-minded to him, where he could talk about anything and not risk a fear of being judged. There were many late night walks to convenience stores, movie marathons with more snacks than the two of you could handle, and too many two a.m. joyrides when either of you needed to get out and just be free for a bit. Everybody thought the two of you were an item, high school sweethearts, or something along those lines, but every time you were prompted the air would get awkward and you would both shrug it off with a laugh, though you ignored the butterflies in your stomach each time.

You had realized that your feelings were past that of friendship only after he’d gotten engaged. Every time he kissed his fiancee, held them, danced with them at parties- you had wished it was you. You scolded yourself and told yourself that Vernon was happy. He had already been content with his life, but every time he was with her, he seemed rejuvenated and so filled with life that you didn’t have it in your heart to tell him your feelings and throw him into a spiral of confusion. So instead, you stayed silent and brushed it off because it would eventually go away, right? You would find your perfect match as he did, and this would be something long in the past. But it never did.

You were brought out of your thoughts by a quiet mumbling from Vernon on the other side of the room. Your eyes redirected their focus onto him, and you could see the worry in his face. One negative thing that came from planning for so long was that he wanted everything to be perfect now- there was no room for error to him, and anything that went even minorly long was driving him up a wall. Slowly rising from your seat, you walked over to him and put your hands on his shoulders, giving them a light squeeze. His eyes shot to look at you and he laughed sheepishly, running a hand through his hair.

“Sorry, I’m sure hearing me bitch all day hasn’t been fun. I’m just-”

“Worried,” you cut him off, a tight smile on your lips as you glanced at him. “I get it. Just come here and let me fix it, instead of hearing you gripe about it for the next half hour.” He only chuckled again in response, taking a step closer to you as your hands slid from his shoulder to the tie hanging loosely around his neck. Your hands moved quickly, tying it into a perfect knot that rested center on his chest. “There, all done. You should have just asked me in the first place, you know.”

“I should’ve. You’ve been doing it for me all these years that I still don’t know how to. What would I ever do without you?”

“Die, I guess.” The two of you shared a laugh, your hands still resting on his shoulders absentmindedly. “Who else would have brought you chicken nuggets and french fries at three in the morning?”

“Or pull a bunch of all nighters with me while I wrote all of my term papers?”

“Or drag your drunk ass back to the dorm after one of Jeonghan’s parties?” You laughed, recalling the way he sloppily clung to you as you walked him around the empty campus. The piles of empty energy drinks as you sped through paper after paper with him at seven in the morning.

“Sit up with me for hours talking about whatever we wanted to?” Vernon spoke quietly this time, his eyes running over your face with an affectionate smile. “I think what we’re getting from this is that you’re the best friend I could have only ever dreamed of, apparently.” You smiled in return, but it was not one filled with happiness or affection as his was. It was one that was shallow, the false joy not reaching up to your eyes. You had a feeling he noticed, but as he opened up his mouth to ask you about it, you merely brushed it off with a pat to his shoulders before retracting your hands back to your side.

“Well, you’re about to go get married to the woman of your dreams, too. You should be heading out any second, right?” With that, your alarm sounded, telling you yes, it was time for him to go. “Apparently, yes. Head out, I’ll be right behind you okay?” Vernon nodded nervously, moving to exit the room with a nervous wave.

“See you out there?” Vernon asked, his eyes locking onto your yours. You could only muster a silent nod, waving him out. Swallowing a lump in your throat, you watched him leave. You loved Vernon, and you had for quite some time. But you would not be selfish with your love and force it onto him when he had found somebody else. Instead, you would endure and stay by his side as his friend. It was painful, but as much as love was about affection and happiness, sacrifice was as much a part of it too.

born in the heart of texas, sloane was raised to be a perfect southern gentleman from the start. whilst his parents were insistent on teaching him right and wrong, they never inflicted any kind of physical, mental, verbal or emotional harm upon their son if he strayed down the wrong path from time to time. as a result, sloane grew to absolutely adore his parents and to this day, he keeps a photo of them in his wallet to remind him to stay grounded. they ultimately taught him the true value of family, and he can never thank them enough for that.

growing up, sloane’s interest in the police force and, ultimately, the fbi, was absolutely undeniable. ( he had the miranda rights memorised before the time he was ten. ) evidently a passion of his, annabelle and joseph vonnegut encouraged sloane to run for it. he starts his police training at fifteen, and by the time he’s eighteen, he’s recruited into the force. ( to this day, he still says it was the happiest day of his life. )

sloane’s a fucking good police officer. wonderfully charming, yet cunning and sly, crime rates plummet under officer vonnegut’s rule. armed with nothing but a sunny smile and a fast-track mind, he’s ( taylor swift vc ) a nightmare dressed like a daydream. he’s every criminal’s worst nightmare, because he’ll send you off with a smile and a lovely little threat.

he’d planned to accelerate through and move to virginia to try and get a training spot with the fbi ; his plans are ruined when, at twenty-four, his girlfriend announces that she’s pregnant with his child. a year later, as he’s cradling his newborn son, he gets a call from his father that his mother has been diagnosed with stage iii breast cancer. that basically puts everything on a halt, bc little mr. family man can’t just let his mother die while he’s off in virginia. 

tbh, he worked his ass off to provide for his then-fiancée, hayley, and their infant son, connor. he was also working to earn enough for his mother’s chemotherapy, and to pay off their mortgage, so ngl he’s working to do a shit ton !!

the pressure gets to him when a killer offers a bribe to look the other way. he knows it’s the wrong thing to do, but he accepts, and he still hasn’t lived it down. sloane fucking hates himself for accepting that bribe, just bc of the consequences.

obviously he gets thrown in hennessy, but hayley breaks off their engagement and tells him it’s best if he doesn’t see connor again which is .. the fuckin final blow bc u know that sloane cares about that baby more than he cares about anything else and the entire concept of not being able to see him fucks him up BEYOND BELIEF

catch him on a good day, and you might get to see a glimpse of a past self - he might throw you a generous smile, make a genuinely funny joke, he might even treat you to that southern hospitality that still lingers somewhere within him. catch him on a bad day, though, and you’ll swear that it’s the devil standing in front of you. he’ll get bitter, and angry, and he might start going off for no apparent reason, and he’ll look gorgeous while he’s doing it but you just know that you shouldn’t go anywhere near him bc jesus fuckin christ that’s an angry man.

INTERESTING FACTS:

He’s known to be extremely charismatic both on and off-stage and loves to engage in fanservice with the fans.

Started dancing when he was seven and auditioned for Crystal Media when he was thirteen.

Dubbed as the group’s ‘happy pill’ due to his seemingly endless energy and enthusiasm, and is also constantly cheerful amongst the members.

Learned English and Japanese with the help of a tutor, thus becoming rather fluent in the languages.

He taught himself how to play the guitar and the piano, and wants to learn how to play the drums.

STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:

+ DANCE, junha’s first love. he’d found talent in dance at a young age and had proceeded to learn a variety of styles since he first began dancing, and he’s skilled in most. despite perfecting his technique over the years, he’s been constantly striving to improve at it – gathering tips varying from instructors to fellow idols to keep up diamond’s reputation of sharp synchronisation.

+ VARIETY/CHARISMA, born with a natural flair for both humor and charm, and known to be the most cheerful of the group! it’s the main reason why he’s sent onto variety shows most of the time, simply because he’s extremely comfortable in front of cameras, and it’s almost a guarantee that he’s able to coax a laugh or two out of almost everyone.

+ QUICK LEARNER, he’s one of the fastest members to pick up the choreography when it’s taught to them after being shown how to do it once or twice. in turn, he helps the other members learn the choreo as well after he’s sure enough to execute it.  

- PRONE TO OVEREXERTING SELF, junha has been a hard worker since his trainee days, but he’s had his eye on a perpetual state of perfection for as long as he can remember. that causes him to push himself further than what he’s capable of to reach that state, without room for error or mistakes, and not knowing when to stop. it wouldn’t be the first time when he’s overexerted himself while practicing, and he doesn’t cares for his health if it means he can push himself to be better.

- OUTSPOKEN, coupled with his ability for variety and also known to be blunt and tactless, junha often finds himself speaking his mind without much thought. his careless words have gotten him into trouble on a few occasions, and he’s indirectly insulted a few without actually knowing it. he always has good intentions, though, and never means any harm.

- VOCALS, he’s still working on his singing, and it’s not an exaggeration when it’s said that junha’s gotten quite an amount of criticism on this over the years of debut. he has a weak vocal range as compared to other idols, and has a tendency to stick more to style than technique. thus, it’s a skill which he’s determined to improve on.

this is junha at eight, with stardust at the tips of his fingers while thriving on passion as much as he flourishes under it.

this is junha at fourteen, alone in seoul with no one and with nothing but determination heavy on his back.

this is junha, hardened at the edges but soft at the same time; he is a ruckus, a whirlwind and flurry of excitement that if you failed to grasp, would slip through the cracks of your fingers within a minute.

his mother had been a renowned actress at the time, while his father had been a successful businessman. he’d been told, countlessly, by him to get his head out of the clouds and get down to work, because real men don’t prance around on stage to dance and sing.

“either way, i still have a stable job and income, don't i?” his father had asked him, eyes shining with pride. it was clear that he’d disapproved of fame, and was determined to force junha down the right career path.

but junha has always been all starry eyes and nimble limbs, and it isn’t surprising when he falls for the life under stage lights. despite his father’s blatant disapproval, he’d discovered ( much to his delight ) that he was a natural at dance at a young age, and that he truly had a passion for performance and making music at the same time. that’s when he decides to audition at crystal media - a place where he believed could truly enhance his skill and a chance at displaying his love for dance, and he wonders, why not give it a shot?

junha leaves for seoul after he gets accepted into the company, but not without endless nights of anger on his father’s end and pride, so much pride, on his mother’s. she says, well done, and she tells him that passion is a powerful thing - and with it, she’s sure he can go far.

and so, this is seo junha at twenty-two, at the peak of his career and the happiest he’s been in his life, and he thinks, maybe he was made for this after all.
