I was touching grass two days ago and stopped to smell the evening primroses (O. speciosa) to refresh my osmic memory… they really do smell like pollen and light honey. Almost buttery, but not nearly like my favorite tulips.
Also, in my looking up the scientific name of those darlings I came across a Southern Living article bemoaning the naturally weedy, spreading nature of evening primrose, and I had to laugh… they’re incompatible with the very idea of a controlled, manicured garden.

Hybrids these days capture the best of two strains strong leaves and gorgeous blooms. I practically found myself surrounded by patches of blooms and darting around bees, butterflies and dragonflies doing their pollinating. The summer is over and getting the last shots of the season got me running around these island gardens.Words and pics by Sergio Guyman.
