Happy 1st day of September, y’all! Today I’m gearing up to share another edition of “Links I Love”.  I’ve definitely had a lot of time to read, considering how my life kind of turned upside down a couple of weeks ago. {I’ll explain a little later, so keep reading.} I’ve just a few links I wanted to share, including a yummy peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe that you will want to make this holiday weekend, and a shout-out to my new favorite fashion icon, Tracee Ellis Ross.
Jumbo Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
I discovered this recipe via Luella & June. It was originally posted by Karlee Flores, who shared this cookie recipe on her blog, Olive & Artisan. I love both chocolate and peanut butter, and these cookies combine the best of both worlds. It’s even topped with some flaky sea salt.  {Can you say “yummy”?} It makes 16 cookies, but if I were you, I’d just double the recipe because I think these will be your new favorite peanut butter chocolate chip cookie.
The Best Self-Tanning Products To Get That Perfect Summer Glow
Several years ago, I stopped using tanning beds and started using some great self tanners. I’ve used lotions, sprays, and mousses, but I’ve not yet tried self-tan drops. The Newsette featured several of their favorite self-tanners that are made with organic, safe ingredients, including one I am eager to try — the Tan Lux Self-Tan Illuminating Body Drops. Take that bronze goddess glow from Summer to Fall with one of these products.
This Fashion Blogger is Calling Out Major Brands to be More Inclusive for Plus Sizes
First of all, I adore blogger Katie Sturino. Her blog, The 12ish Style, features #SuperSizeTheLook, where she replicates a particular look of a celebrity or model. I jumped for joy when I red on PureWow that Katie called out major brands to carry extended sizes for women who wear a size 12/14 or above. And like Katie, I encourage all of you to tag our favorite brands and join in the #MakeMySizeMovement.
My Tips for Making Perfect Pancakes
My husband loves pancakes, especially on the weekends, and Emily, with Cupcakes and Cashmere, has given my pancakes a new lease on a tasty life! I use Bisquick to make my pancakes, but I’m definitely going to try these tips the next time I make pancakes for my husband.
Tracee Ellis Ross is an Underrated Fashion Icon
The daughter of Diana Ross, Tracee isn’t afraid to shine in her fashion choices. She is just – in one word – FIERCE! One look at her Instagram feed and you’ll find fashion inspiration galore! Thanks to StyleCaster for featuring this style queen! I love Tracee, and even invited her to one of my {imaginary} dinner parties.
So there you have it… And these are just a few of the “links I love” from August. I’m link more later this month!
And now for a quick “life update”:
On August 14, 2018, I received a call that no wife wants to get.
Marshall: “Is this Vanessa?” Me: “Yes…” Marshall: “Hello, my name is Marshall. I work in the Emergency Room here at UT Medical Center.” Me: “Okay…” Marshall: “Is your husband’s name Mike?” Me: “Yes…” Marshall: “Well, he gave me your name and number and wanted me to call you. He’s been in a motorcycle accident.” Me: “Are you serious?” Marshall: “Yes. He’s stable, but you may want to head this way, if you can.” Me: “Absolutely. I’ll be right there.” {This is where my heart dropped deep down into the pit of my stomach.} Marshall: “Okay. I’ll be waiting for you in the lobby of the Emergency Room.” Me: “Okay. Thank you.”
After I hung up, I turned to my friend and co-worker, Cindy A., and said, “Mike was in a motorcycle accident and he’s at UT. I’ve got to go.” Considering the number of motorcycle crashes recently, most of which resulted in a fatality, I was thankful that he was “stable”, but what did that mean exactly? UT Medical Center is the Region’s Level 1 Trauma Center. Would I find him with road rash from his head to his feet? Did he have any broken bones? Was he conscious? Was he going to have to be rushed to surgery?
I hurried to my truck and texted my former office manager, Marcy, who works on the UTMC campus. I told her what had happened and that I was headed to UTMC. {I’m not going to lie and say I drove the speed limit.} She met me down in the ER, while Mike was getting x-rays. Because he had a fractured skull {with a subdural hematoma and a subarachnoid hemorrhage}, several fractured ribs, a grade 1 liver laceration, and a fractured pelvis {in two places}, he was admitted to the hospital.
Hospital recliners are so uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as my husband was with all his fractures (pelvis, ribs, and skull). He was miserable the entire seven days we were at the hospital.
Believe it or not, he had little to no road rash. He had a bruise on the under-side of his right arm, a small two-inch abrasion just above his belly button, and a large bruise on the inside of his left thigh. His left foot was swollen and bruised, and we think he also broke his big toes on both feet.
We figured out how to turn the bed into a chair!
He stayed in the hospital for seven days and was discharged home on Tuesday, 8/21/2018, which was one week to the day of his motorcycle crash. He is home now, rehabbing on his own. He is able to walk using a walker, but he still has some pain. {Here are some photos of his bruises.}
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Discharge day! When he was told he was being discharged home, it didn’t take him long to change out of the hospital gown and into street clothes. He was ready to GO!
Mike was wheeled down to the Fountain Circle by Brandon. Mike was ready to go home and finally sleep in his own bed. If I’m being honest, I was ready to go home and sleep in my own bed too!
As I said, he was riding his motorcycle on his way to work when another driver pulled out across a very busy highway and into his path. He had very little time to decide what to do. The trooper said that he collided with the other driver’s car and flipped over the vehicle, and landed on the road. His motorcycle was totaled, and he says that his motorcycle days are essential over.
RPM Garage back in business {well, sort of…} – Mike was feeling well enough one day to sit in his home office for a couple of hours, under the watchful eye of Doc, and do a little Bronco business. {Don’t mind the messy office; it’s a bit of a catch-all room.}
There were a lot of fatalities involving motorcycles prior to and after my husband’s accident. So here’s a bit of advice, from one driver to another… watch out for motorcycles… “look twice, save a life.” Be more aware of your surroundings when driving because there are a lot of motorcyclists on the road. Every driver, whether you’re on a motorcycle or in a vehicle, needs to slow down and drive more cautiously. {I’ll get off my soapbox now 🙂 }
I’ve got more links to share with you, but I’ll hold onto them until later this month!
Yours Truly, Vanessa

#FatBabesInLuxury Is Trending. Here’s What It Means To Plus-Size Creators
Tumblr media
In April, Katie Sturino, the founder of beauty brand Megababe and author of Body Talk, and Nicolette Mason, a fashion blogger, were so fed up with luxury fashion’s long-practised exclusion of anyone above a size US 16 (UK 18) that they decided to do something about it. For their collective 805,000 Instagram followers, the two launched a social media campaign, #FatBabesInLuxury. Their goal was to start a conversation around the lack of representation — and shoppable clothing options — in the luxury fashion space. Because while plus-size and size-inclusive lines are on the rise, representation in the highest echelons of fashion’s hierarchy remains few and far between.
For proof, see last year: While 2020 saw wins like Dutch model Jill Kortleve becoming the first plus-size model to walk in a Chanel fashion show in a decade and in Fendi’s history (a title she shared with Paloma Elsesser), as well as Versace sending three curve models down its runway, overall, luxury brands have been slow to accept size inclusivity. According to The Fashion Spot, only 46 out of 6,879 models cast were plus-size for Autumn 2020 and 34 (out of 2,293) for Spring 2021 during last year’s Fashion Months.
“I love fancy bags, shoes, & clothes (when they’re available in my size),” Sturino wrote on Instagram beneath an image of herself wearing a Lele Sadoughi headband and clutching a Chanel purse. “But it seems like season after season, we see brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel working almost exclusively with thin models, influencers & ambassadors, which results in a strong message that plus bodies are NOT included in the vision of luxury.”

Mason took to her own Instagram account. “I believe that representation, to an extent, can shift the way people view themselves — and each other,” she wrote in a concurrent post alongside pictures of her posing with a Louis Vuitton handbag and Miu Miu sunglasses. “That being seen & shown as beautiful, luxurious, worthy of investment — that that helps people see, appreciate, and believe in their own beauty. That they deserve. That they belong. That there is possibility.”
Both then called on their followers to flood the hashtag with images of themselves wearing whatever it is that they deem luxurious. The result? Almost 900 posts, many of which were accompanied by moving personal stories, as well as pleas for representation and inclusivity in designer fashion.

A post shared by LYDIA OKELLO | they/them (@styleisstyle)
“When I think of #FatBabesInLuxury, I think of access,” says fashion writer and creator Lydia Okello, who posted a photo of themself with body-positive slow-fashion activist Marielle Elizabeth using the hashtag. “I’ve worked in fashion for about 16 years, and I’ve seen the way that fat bodies have been left out.” Moving forward, Okello hopes to see luxury designers finally realize that bigger customers are no less deserving of high-end goods. “We have taste, personality, and style,” they say. According to Okello, being plus-size doesn’t change the underlying desires that keep the wheels of fashion in motion: “We want what everyone wants: to feel beautiful, special, and exciting in our clothes.”
“We are so often denied the finer things in life, or excluded from luxury, that we have to make a freaking hashtag to celebrate when we are able to.”
Lynley Eilers, Plus-size model
Plus-size model Lynley Eilers agrees: “We want access to clothing, like everyone else; access to experiences, like everyone else,” she says. “It’s plain and simple: fat women want what everyone else has — we just want it in our size!” Unfortunately, according to her, fatphobia, as it stands today, is too deeply embedded into society — fashion especially. When one designer comes out with garments for larger customers, it’s cause for celebration — even though it should just be the status quo. “We are so often denied the finer things in life, or excluded from luxury, that we have to make a freaking hashtag to celebrate when we are able to,” Eilers says.
For influencers Essie Golden and Gregoria Reyes-Lou (Greivy), the hashtag has become an escape from the thousands of luxury ads they’re bombarded with each day, hardly any of which are representative of them or people who look like them. “#FatBabesInLuxury is the representation that I don’t see in the media, but I do see in my everyday life,” Golden tells Refinery29. “I enjoy scrolling through that hashtag and seeing so many beautiful plus-size people looking incredible in their [luxury-to-them] pieces.” According to Greivy, it created a way for people like her to connect and share their love of style that’s elevated. “It’s for people who seek inspiration outside of what society claims a luxurious person should look like and be,” she says.

A post shared by Greivy® (@greivy)
#FatBabesInLuxury is about more than pressuring designers to make their pieces in larger sizes. It’s a movement geared at pushing the luxury space to include larger bodies in ad campaigns, shows, and editorials. “Our society and the industry doesn’t deem fat women worthy of the finer things,” Eilers says. And they won’t until people get used to seeing designer labels on a full range of bodies.
“Luxury fashion is selling a visual of someone who they believe is aspirational,” says Sturino, “but only in one form.” This campaign was meant to force luxury brands to see past their old definition of beauty and join the rest of the world. Sounding a brighter note, Sturino says the bulk of society has evolved and is, in many ways, very inclusive. Unfortunately, in the two months since she called on luxury brands to step up for plus-size shoppers, according to Sturino, not one has reached out to the activist to discuss opportunities for change.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

How two plus size influencers are twinning with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
yahoo
You don’t have to be thin, rich — or royal, for that matter — to look and feel like a prince or (soon-to-be) princess. Just ask plus-size influencers Katie Sturino and Ryan Dziadul. The duo recreated one of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s recent ensembles, and the result is inspiring in so many ways.
Who else is amped for The Royal Wedding?!? Obviously US! We’re #supersizethelook -ing anything that this dashing couple puts on. Yay Beret and how handsome is @extraextrastyle as Prince H?!
A post shared by Katie Sturino (@the12ishstyle) on Apr 15, 2018 at 5:08pm PDT
Sturino, founder of the 12ish style blog, and mother of the late Toast the dog, and Dziadul, founder of Extra Extra Style, frequently team up to recreate famous photos, but this one takes the cake, or should we say crown?
They both shared photos of their work on Instagram, posting side-by-side images of the royal couple and themselves rocking near-identical outfits. The looks they chose were worn by Markle and Prince Harry on Commonwealth Day, for Markle’s first official appearance with Queen Elizabeth.
The actress was wearing a navy-blue dress and long cream coat by Amanda Wakeley, topped with a matching cream beret by Stephen Jones. On her feet she wore navy pumps. Sturino found pieces similar to Markle’s, including a Rachel Roy coat and an ASOS hat, creating an approachable version of the high-end outfit. The prince wore a navy-blue suit with a maroon tie, and Dziadul did the same. Dziadul and Sturino even had the royal poses down pat, proving that even civilians can reach the style levels of royalty.
“The Royal We” edition of @the12ishstyle ‘s #SuperSizeTheLook What do you think? You wanna marry my version of Harry?
A post shared by Ryan Dziadul (@extraextrastyle) on Feb 18, 2018 at 4:40pm PST
A few months ago, Sturino enlisted Dziadul to recreate their first royal look, for Prince Harry and Markle’s first appearance together after announcing their engagement. “They’re a couple the whole world is watching. They’re young, they’re stylish, and I’ve never met them, but they seem like fun,” Dziadul tells Yahoo Lifestyle, explaining why they like to recreate the couple’s looks.
"Top 15 Female Fashio Blogger January 2018 No. 12 Katie Sturino Founder of @Megababe IG @the12ishstyle ""Which one is marrying Harry amiright??"" . . . . . . . #howtostyle #stylediaries #fullofcurves #chokerstyle #chokermania #grungelook #velvetnails #camidress #slipdresses #supersizethelook #ootd #instagood #officeoutfit #iglove #instadaily #igdaily #fashion #stylewoman #femeworld #feme #fashionblogger #12ish #likeit #builtbygirls #KatieSturino #love #follow ️️"
A post shared by femeworld (@femeworld) on Feb 6, 2018 at 10:06am PST
Sturino’s also taken with Markle’s style solo; she once proved that double denim can look good on anybody, especially when topped with a camel peacoat like Markle’s. “Well, who doesn’t have royal fever right now?” Sturino tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “The world can’t get enough of this couple, especially Meghan Markle’s style choices.”
She’s right — the Meghan Markle effect is in full swing.
But there’s more to it than simply fawning over the soon-to-be newlyweds. “Meghan and Harry have the world’s resources at their fingertips — from money to stylists to trainers. But that doesn’t mean they have a monopoly on style,” Dziadul explains. “Regular people, and plus-size people, deserve to look and feel like royalty too.”
As Sturino chimed in, “I would say that Harry and Meghan represent one of the most attractive couples in the universe right now, and if you don’t happen to fit their body-type profile, it’s nice to see that these looks can translate to any size.”
Their followers agree: Sturino’s post from Monday has almost 10,000 likes. “I think we’re so conditioned to seeing celebs and famous people looking a certain way (aka thin!) that people are psyched to see another interpretation of their style,” Dziadul says.
Sturino feels this way about all public figures, which is why her #SupersizeTheLook project exists. She recreates outfits worn by celebs on a regular basis, and she always hits it out of the park — sometimes looking better than the original wearer of the outfit. Some of Sturino’s most successful recreations include Amal Clooney in her red dress and camel coat, a golden Beyoncé ensemble, and Chrissy Teigen in a see-through skirt.
We’re in complete awe of Katie and how she always inspires us with her #supersizethelook project. Such a !!! #Curveyor ❤️ @the12ishstyle

And she doesn’t steer clear of models just because of their slender frames. With the help of fellow plus-size women, she’s nailed the looks of Gigi, Kendall, and Bella.
#supersizethelook Friends Edition‍♀️ with @huntermcgrady ‍♀️ on the eve of national women’s day, a reminder it’s not about who wore it better, it’s about the fact that anybody can wear anything! Don’t limit your style inspiration❤️

She even once wore practically nothing to recreate one of Kylie Jenner‘s looks.
SEND NUDES! I wanted to #supersizethelook for Kylie's nude look bc i thought it was hot! You don't need flat abs to rock a sexy sporty look like this Mine is by @outdoorvoices More on the blog!
A post shared by Katie Sturino (@the12ishstyle) on Apr 25, 2017 at 7:25pm PDT
“Celebrities have access to a whole team of people telling them how to look good, so in general, they are supercurrent on trends and styles, and we’re lucky to have them as a resource!” she says. “However, many people think they can’t pull off so-and-so’s style. I’m just trying to let women know that style has nothing to do with size.”
Her favorite creation was inspired by Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert. For that, she tracked down the exact Gucci skirt worn by the fashion editor and paired it with a similar multicolored tee. “I loved the Giovanna Battaglia Gucci skirt look,” she says. “Personally, she is my favorite style personality to copy, as everything she wears is perfection.”
A recent Kate Bosworth recreation proved to be difficult, however. “I recently did Kate Bosworth in some yellow flare pants. … Those were tough to find in my size for sure,” she notes. But that challenge is nothing new to her.

“It’s kind of hard to find things in my sizes for many of the celebrities I supersize,” she shares. Luckily, Markle’s style is easy to mimic, no matter what your size. “She chooses classic pieces and mixes them in a refreshing and updated way,” says Sturino. “I was excited to see her in the beret look, because it gave me a chance to try that style on myself!”
But even when she’s not trying to dress like a celebrity, shopping isn’t so simple; she describes herself as a “size 12ish in a size 2 world.”
“I’m certainly used to having a hard time finding clothing in my size — it’s why I started my blog,” Sturino says. “To share my tips and tricks with women who have to scour the internet for the closest thing that seems to be readily available for anyone who is above a size 4.”
She has hope that it will get easier. “It’s starting to get easier, though, with the introduction of websites like CoEdition and some of the plus-size brands out there, like Eloquii. There is light at the end of the tunnel.”

ELOQUII X Katie Sturino Collection #xoq
ELOQUII X Katie Sturino Collection #xoq
Eloquii Chicago invited a bunch of us for this awesome collaboration event with Katie Sturino from the 12ish style.  Her collaboration and inspiration of looks are amazing for the plus size woman. A lot of us really enjoyed her collection, as well as the party held at The Shops at North Bridge. One thing I noticed, and a little style warning is some of the pieces run a tad small, so just size up…

Katie Sturino Gets Real About Thigh Chafing, Body Confidence, and Her #MakeMySize Movement
What prompted you to launch your company?
I created Megababe because when I looked for products to combat chafe, everything was cheesy or geared toward men and athletes. I wanted something that was for women—for a girl who’s wearing a skirt, who’s walking to work, and who doesn’t want to chafe. It’s funny, people who have chafing were like, “This is genius. I need this immediately.” And people who didn’t have it were like, “Hun, I think you should probably think of a different business idea. This is dumb.” So I had to really believe in myself because not everyone was on my side.

You’re a social media wizard. Any tips for people?
Stop starting every video with, “You guys...” (Ha!) But really, I’d tell people to worry less about how many followers they have and to just talk about what interests you. People choose to follow you, which means they want to hear what you have to say!
You encourage brands to carry more inclusive sizing with your hashtag #MakeMySize. How did that start?
I kept ordering clothes from sites and nothing fit—nothing came even close. I was like, “F--- this, I am a fashion blogger who needs to buy clothes and I can’t—this is crazy!” I was frustrated and posted about it. For a long time, I wouldn’t have done that publicly. But I got to a point where I realized, “If these designers don’t make my size, they don’t care about me anyway, so what do I have to lose?” I’ve had lots of great reactions from brands—like Veronica Beard, who wound up making my size.

You post frequently about working out. Do you get a lot of feedback around being a curvy woman in the fitness scene?
Yes, I do. I post workout photos, and followers will say things like, “I walked into SoulCycle, and I walked right out. I can’t work out with those girls with washboard abs.” I find that at so many workout classes, I go in and I’ll be the only person in a sports bra—which is funny because I’m often the biggest girl in the room.
Is that why you’ve partnered with model Hunter McGrady to encourage women to exercise by hosting workouts at different studios in NYC?
Yes. There’s such an intimidation factor around going into those places. Hunter and I are both confident about going into those spaces, but many of our followers aren’t. So we decided to create safe workouts where you don’t have to feel bad if you can’t keep up and you can wear what you want. It’s been freeing to see women who are embracing their bodies together—it’s powerful.
