Chantala Kommanivanh is an emerging Laotian American artist. Kommanivanh's work is inspired from old family photographs and found images representing his childhood. His work uses paint and loose canvas, often collage and layered with drawn and painted marks, areas of thick paint and thin stains of color to explore his experience as a member of a refugee family. There are glimpses of a displaced youth negotiating a new cultural landscape, family ties, and various aspects of identity and urban life in his work. Mario “Zore” Gonzalez Jr is known for using traditional methods of graffiti writing as well as modern abstract expressionism to create a new aesthetic in both graffiti and modern art. He tags, scratches, “bombs” and buffs the canvas to create a raw abstract urban aesthetic. Zor Zor Zor creates melancholy mask like characters that evoke thoughts and feeling she holds inside. Many of her works can be seen glued to walls, newspaper boxes, and abandoned board ups on city streets throughout the world. Her characters complement his abstract work, layering her pasted imagery over his energetic mark making.
