The Space Between
“And this is, well...” Cadenza paused, tapping her cheek thoughtfully. “We call it the Space Between. I don’t know what it is exactly, but from what we can tell it’s an area that only can be entered by people who’re fully in touch with their own souls.”
“But I thought you said—” Pierliss started before Saffron jumped in.
“We’re the only ones we know of. Other souls show up here sometimes but it’s not like we can tell who they are. Certainly not anyone we’ve run into in Blackacre; otherwise we’d’ve been able to sniff ‘em out.” Saffron tapped her foot against the linoleum floor. “We try not to talk business while we’re here. Ruins the vibe. Can we go now? I want to find that lost Terry Dougal novel while I can remember the name.” Without waiting for an answer, she ran ahead of the rest of the group, mumbling “the Twilight Fish, the Twilight Fish,” under her breath.
Cadenza put her hand between Pierliss’ shoulder blades and gently guided her forward through the shimmering entrance. Pierliss couldn’t help but be struck with the similarity to a mall – the linoleum paneling, the fake plants, the way everything was separated into different stores, the... wait. She squinted, staring at the beveled text on the wall at the junction far down the hall from them. “Blackacre Mall?” Pierliss read aloud. “This is just Blackacre Mall! The one on Marston Avenue! You’re telling me that this mysterious liminal place you’ve been telling me about is just a goddamn shopping mall?!”
“Not quite.” Cadenza led Pierliss further into the mall to a bench that looked no different from the wooden ones Pierliss was familiar with. “Sit. Let me give you the rundown before you jump to conclusions.”
Pierliss sat. She knew when not to pick a fight – or, at least, she’d learned about when not to pick a fight and promptly discarded most of the knowledge.
“Look here.” Cadenza pulled out her phone. This was not unusual behavior for Cadenza, nor was that she had to swipe away several windows of what could be tactfully called “erotica of the written word”. Her phone’s background, a field of daisies under a pale blue sky, was only visible for a moment before she tapped on an app with no title and only a black square as an icon and a map filled the screen. A red dot sat, gently pulsing, at what was marked the entrance, with a hovering tooltip reading “you are here” just above it.
Pierliss scanned the map. It extended past the phone’s borders in every direction but the one they’d come from, and it most certainly did not resemble the layout of any mall she’d ever seen. She shot a suspicious glance at Cadenza. “Explain.”
“You like it?” Cadenza asked, scrolling to the right and never reaching an end. “One-Oh-Six built this app for us. They said to say that they’re sorry for not joining us, but they’re deep in on Galactic Quest IV’s endgame and that they’re not actually that sorry.”
The suspicious glance only got more intense.
“Right, right, sorry. So this place looks like a mall, yeah. The thing is, it looks different to everyone. Here.” Cadenza snapped a quick picture of the far wall, where Pierliss had seen the Blackacre Mall label, and showed it to her.
“Grennell County Mall?” Pierliss read. “But...”
Cadenza nodded. “Yeah. Nobody else I’ve met sees it as the ‘miracle of commerce located in scenic Grennell, off ramp 27’. Best as I can tell, this place is superficially similar to whatever your first experience with a liminal space was, except it goes on forever.” On seeing Pierliss’ expression shift to bemused, she continued. “Places of transition and nostalgia. Mine’s a mall. It was the local hangout for teens before it was demolished. I spent a lot of time there myself. Had my first kiss in the changing room at the Last Sunday’s.” Cadenza sighed and stared at the map for a moment before catching herself. “Anyway, yeah. Teenage years are by definition transitional, and clearly it’s nostalgic. Saffron says her Space Between looks like a playground that got bulldozed for some high-end apartments. She’s still bitter about it.”
“What about One-Oh-Three?”
“Do you know, they’ve never been here?” Cadenza said. “I think they’re scared of seeing what it looks like to them. They probably wouldn’t want me to say more. What’s the vibes here to you?”
The sudden question took Pierliss by surprise, and she had to collect her thoughts before answering. “Oh, Blackacre Mall was where Yew got his first job. I mean, where I got mine. The video store. I liked it good enough, I guess. The manager was chill. Then they closed and got replaced by a jewelry store.”
“First jobs are definitely transitional.” Cadenza stood back up and grabbed Pierliss’ hand, pulling her to her feet. “Anyway, now that you know the deal, let me show you around.”
Pierliss raised an eyebrow. “You want to show me around the infinite mall?”
“Don’t worry, it’s not THAT infinite. First stop is just past that pretzel stand.” Without letting go of Pierliss, Cadenza led her past shop after shop. No matter how Pierliss tried, she couldn’t quite make out the name of any store they passed, and her eyes would slide away from the displays. The only one that actually resolved itself in her vision was the one they stopped in front of, and the sign above the door just read “CLoTHES”.
Pierliss poked her head in the door. A completely average Scene Mien greeted her in return, though without any workers or customers. The song playing faintly over the speakers felt familiar, but Pierliss couldn’t quite make out the lyrics or the tune; she could hum along until she started thinking about it.
“This place,” Cadenza said as she squeezed past Pierliss into the store, “is your favorite clothing store, except every item here fits exactly how you want it to.” She reached a hand into a stack of fishnet tops and pulled out a pair of pastel yellow overalls. “For me it’s a Nickel & Dime, but I’m guessing that’s not the case for you.”
“No, it’s... definitely not.” Pierliss stared at a rack of pre-weathered black jeans, all in size 26. None of them had a price tag on them. “And I can just... take these?”
“Yep! To do with what you like. The only caveat is that they’re yours, in the truest sense of the word. As soon as they leave your possession, they disappear. So you can’t give them away, unfortunately.” Cadenza held a sky-blue sundress up against her as she looked in a mirror. It fit perfectly. “Saffron and I tried that our first time here. Big disappointment, admittedly, but it helps us make ends meet at least.” She tossed her phone to Pierliss. “Take a look at the map. We’ll get it installed on your phone when we go back, but for now, find somewhere you want to check out.”
There was a list alongside the map that Pierliss scrolled through – significantly smaller than the map made the mall look. All of them bore generic names – “MOviE”, “FOOd”, “BooK”, and “TOYs” were nearest ones to “CLoTHES”, and there was a green dot moving around inside “BooK” that was helpfully labeled “Saffron”.
Pierliss tapped on “MOvIE”. As the map scrolled to the shop’s location, a description populated underneath the name. “Every movie ever made is here,” she read, “and quite a few that weren’t. Current theory is that they’re ones that died in production, or hobbyist ones that never saw the light of day. The popcorn’s good, but the real stars are the slushies. – Description written by Saffron Sage.”
“Oh yeah, that one’s fun,” said Cadenza, tying her hair up with a ribbon she’d fished from a basket of spiked bracelets. “We went last weekend and saw a showing of this old movie I was convinced Quench made up. Turns out it was canceled early on in production. Who knew, right?”
“Cadenza, this – this is amazing.” The list of stores went on, showing locations further and further away from the “CLoTHES”. “How do you not just stay in here forever?”
“Oh, right! Duh!” Cadenza smacked her forehead. “I should have told you sooner. You can only stay here a few hours at most.”
“Why? Does it kick you out or something?”
“No, no, nothing like that. It just takes a couple hours before the Forgotten realize we’re here. Can’t stick around with them.”
“The Forgotten?” The capital letter spilled out of Pierliss’ mouth without her even trying. “Who’re they?”
But Cadenza had already left the store, basket of skirts in hand. “Let’s go find Saffron! I want to see the book she was looking for!”
