Rangda: Big Ears 2017

The trio of Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls, et all) Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and Chris Corsano (various insanity, incl this Tweedy/Gray/Corsano set), aka Rangda, was a hugely welcome addition to the ‘guitar pyrotechnics’ sect of this year’s Big Ears lineup. I’d dug into all 3 records on Drag City and had caught a ~40 min festival set once before, but I’d yet to see the trio hit the deep improvisational zones I’d heard on other live recordings/innernette videos...and I’m quite happy to say that’s no longer the case. Over the course of their discography-spanning set, Bishop/Chasny/Corsano expertly choogle their way through 6 shorter Middle Eastern-influenced psychedelic jams with intense precision...but the real story here is the expansive, explosive 20+ minute “Plain of Jars” to close, which exemplifies why I was so excited to see this particular project at this particular festival. Jeff Tweedy Meets Chikamorachi: Big Ears 2017

Beginning with a simple/unmic’d “hello”, Jeff Tweedy and Chris Corsano/Darin Gray (together, Chikamorachi) spent the next ~50 unplanned minutes of fury assaulting the (surprisingly small) audience with rolling waves of sonic blasts cut with sparse, brooding interludes that would detonate just as soon as you started to feel comfortable.  From minute1 it was clear that probable alien, Corsano (seriously...how else do you explain that shit?) was in the driver’s seat with Gray providing colossal rumble and Tweedy’s feedback-laden squalls dancing atop all of that thunder. The Loose Fur guitarist seemed to revel in not having to play frontman for once, leaning into every pick/pull/bend/whammy like a dad possessed.  I can’t think of a better place for the first(/hopefully not last) ‘Tweedy Meets Chikamorachi’ show than the Big Ears Festival, and having an esteemed songsmith improvise a noise set is just about as Big Ears as it gets.  This one is a ripper and should be played at maximum volume for maximum effect.  Jeff Tweedy Meets Chikamorachi 3.25.2017 @ The Mill & Mine Knoxville, TN 1. improvisation Jeff Tweedy - guitar Chris Corsano - drums Darin Gray - bass download
