Album cover inspiration #albumcover
While researching inspirations about album covers as part of a college project, I was looking to recreate the timeless idea of nostalgia that occurs often in music. My project was to redesign the album cover of the famous band Radiohead and their album “In Rainbows”. This album is definitely one of their more transparent work, described as an album of deep physical and psychological desires they express many of the human emotions. For me it seemed like a journey in time and space, one feels very close to the feelings of the singer who expresses different human emotions. It's like a dive into his memories and thoughts. It is this nostalgia that I tried to illustrate as well as the contrast between these different emotions, sometimes very soft or warm but also sometimes darker and colder.
The first album cover that came to my mind wich express this idea of nostalgia and so memories is “Sunset Cassette” from the singer Biga Ranx. Just by its title, with cassette meaning tape we can imagine old memories/ melody kept in a tap. I liked the use of mix design in superposition, with the picture in black and white and colorfoul design on top. The simplicity of the writing, which seems like marker pen, also make me thing about childhood moments. By the font used being bigger and colorfull our eyes are first attracted to the main information (title, artist name) and then to additional details about the production and other things about the singer.
To recreate Radiohead’s album cover I though about the very soft side of some of “In Rainbow” songs. One of my concept was to go for soft and warm colours which for me express well passion and desires. The last album/single “Costa Rica” from Bankrol Hayden made around pink and orange colour tones (analogous colours composition), worked very well for me. I liked the pastel effect that soften even more the design concept.
Last but not least is the album cover of worldwide famous band Red Hot Chili Peppers “Californication”. The double contrast effect with the sky and the sea and the orange of the sun (I’m guessing) and the deep blue of the ocean is amazing as simple it is. The blue put above and the orange down makes me thing about the idea of good VS bad, heaven VS hell... An opposition that we find also in In Rainbow with happy songs and more obscur ones. I really like how this result, in a intriguing and disturbing picture that makes you want to dive in. Everyone knows and remember this iconic album cover.
