The idea of a Beyond Evil prison fic has been brewing in my mind for ages, but I have no idea where it’s heading because I only have knowledge of Korean prisons from watching Innocent Defendant :)
Pretty Flowers Wilt Too Soon
The first thought that comes to Dong Sik’s mind is utterly ridiculous: blue doesn’t suit Han Joo Won. It’s hard to spoil a face like his, but that’s certainly not his color. Police uniform hadn’t become him. Prison clothes doesn’t either. Surprisingly, a bruise on his cheekbone fits him more, adds a certain roughness to his features.
Dong Sik squints in the bright sunlight, but the apparition doesn’t disappear. It’s definitely Han Joo Won loitering across the prison yard.
“This one is trouble,” a voice behind him says.
“How so?” another one joins in eagerly—prison gossips spread like wildfire.
“Ended up in solitary confinement on his first day here. His cell mates wanted to kind of haze him, especially because he’s an ex-cop. You know how it is with ex-cops—”
There’s an awkward pause—and even without turning back, Dong Sik knows they are looking at him now, a former policeman as well.
Actually, his case is somewhat atypical. One could say he’s a celebrity who has brought down a Commissioner General, and also a survivor of police injustice, so his inmates have been more curious than hostile. Or maybe it’s his irresistible personality, who knows? Anyway, he hasn’t been subjected to any bullying.
Han Joo Won, though … it’s another matter entirely. The son of said Commissioner General, a Police University top graduate, an aloof and arrogant brat—all of this paints a huge target on him.
“So why was he punished instead of them?” the gossiping goes on.
“Because they are in the infirmary. All of them.”
There’s another pause, filled with awe this time. Maybe Han Joo Won isn’t entirely helpless, maybe he’ll even make a quick reputation for himself, a bright young thing skilled in martial arts. But what’s going to happen when his assailants are out? Does he think they will leave him be?
“Any idea why he got locked here?”
“Forging evidence, I think. He put something incriminating into his chief's safe, that kind of stuff. But it’s not like he got caught. They say he confessed of his own free will for some reason.”
“Nah, why would anyone in their right mind do that?”
In their right mind, yes, Dong Sik says to himself. Did the haughty prince realize what might await him in prison?
That’s when Joo Won finally sees him across the yard too, sitting on a bench and enjoying a sunny day. But he just stares and stares and makes no attempt at approaching, so Dong Sik is the one who has to get up with a sigh and stroll to where he’s standing.
At a closer distance, it turns out Joo Won also has a split brow, stitched more or less neatly, and a few more purple marks on his neck, like someone has tried to strangle him.
“Lee Dong Sik-ssi,” he says with a small courteous bow, like they are at a social gathering and not in a dusty prison yard.
Dong Sik very strongly feels like putting a bruise on his other cheekbone, or maybe grabbing him by the collar and shaking him really hard, but he knows none of this will help. Oh you stupid pretty flower, what have you gotten yourself into?

A Beyond Evil fic rec list: General and Teen
[So, apparently, you can break Tumblr when you write too much or include too many links, or I don't know, are just too much. So, I'm splitting this rec list into two or three posts.]
So, I was meant to do this about a month ago but a lot of life happened. But now, I'm doing it. I'm just doing it, I can't be stopped and I won't because y'all deserve recognition and for your work to be shared. This first post only includes fic with a General or Teen rating.
FYI: This will be an ever-growing list and will be updated semi-regularly
Rating: General
on my tip toes by therandompasserby “You said that, but you keep avoiding my touch,” the words escape from Dongsik’s lips faster than he can think of.
Juwon squints at him and finishes up his last plate to put in the drying rack.
“What, are you ashamed of me?” Dongsik asks jokingly, hoping it will hide the nervousness vibrating his skin. His palm feels damp, but not from washing the dishes.
Or: in which Dongsik is befuddled trying to navigate his relationship with Juwon after they kissed.
picture perfect by therandompasserby “Do you want to have a child?”
“What—you mean a living, breathing, human kid?” Dongsik tosses the words lightly as a joke, his eyes crinkling with mirth as if expecting Juwon to bolt out at the idea. As if the idea of being responsible for one sticky little human – the ultimate form of attachment – will deter him.
“…You do realize neither of us has the right organ for it, right?”
Or: Juwon thinks Dongsik really is too old to run at the topic of children (not to say Juwon himself didn't freak out or anything).
With the twirl of a finger by Namless When he’s done, Juwon fishes a handkerchief from the back pocket of his jeans, wiping the sweat away from Dongsik’s shoulders. Then he gets down to the coolbox and grabs the bottles inside. Dongsik is still admiring their garden, the mountain not so far, all covered in green in this season.
“You like my mane though.” There’s a slight appreciative hiss to his voice when Juwon slides the beer bottle against his spine and then the side of his throat.
“Of course I do.” Juwon replies, index finger twirling the end of the ponytail absent-mindedly. “It still needs a trim. Your mane will be all the more glorious.” he teases.
Partners by Namless "Embarrassing? Do you hate your boyfriend giving you a piggyback ride that much?"
Dongsik could practically hear Juwon's eyeroll behind him and it made him chuckle once more.
The stubbornness of the sleepyhead by Namless "Juwon-ah."
Juwon squeezed his midriff in protestation, voice still laced with tendrils of slumber.
"It's my only weekend off. Don't go."
a second to breathe by whir Juwon gets into an accident. Dongsik loses his shit.
the matchmaking ahjummas and halmeonis of manyang by little_roo “Ohhh, look it’s our Inspector Han!”
Dong Sik’s ears perk up at this and he turns to see two ahjummas hurrying towards them. One is tall and thin, hair just becoming speckled with gray and the other is petite, Dong Sik remembers her from a few grades above him in school. He glances over at the stoic inspector just to see a small smile on his face and Dong Sik has to do a double take just to make sure his brain didn’t make it up.
“Are you here buying dinner for your sweetheart again?”
Joo Won chokes suddenly and Dong Sik lets out a surprised laugh, turning fully to look at Joo Won with raised eyebrows and a wide grin.
Or more affectionately known as the fic where joo won gets showered in love by every older woman in manyang even though he really just wants one specific ahjussi to like him.
Happy to have you near by bluetrees Joo Won and Dong Sik attend a wedding of a former colleague, for the first time as a couple. What happens next will warm your heart!
It's a Dog Life by bluetrees What says 'pretty much married' more than adopting a dog together? It's only logical, according to Lee Dong Sik. Han Joo Won begs to differ.
with paper rings by Katierosefun “Two years,” Soo Jin said brightly. “How nice.”
“Like us,” Gwang Young said with a bright smile of his own—then paused. “Well, technically…just without the married bit…”
Dong Sik felt another stir at his shoulder. He instinctively pried a hand free, patting Joo Won’s head just once—go back to sleep, no need to get back into conversation, but the younger man was already shaking himself awake.
“But it’s…” Joo Won blinked a few times, one hand rubbing his eyes. “But it’s basically the same.”
[or: the topic of marriage comes up. joo won apparently has some thoughts.]
one good movie kiss by Katierosefun Lighting her cigarette, Ji Hwa continues, “People tell when you don’t mean it. Kissing, I mean.”
Dong Sik thinks about that for a little while.
[or: five times lee dong sik kissed people (or got kissed) for the hell of it, and the one time he kissed someone because he genuinely meant it.]
anyways, don't be a stranger by katierosefun “Sorry for being a few minutes late,” Ji Hwa says cheerfully, walking up to a stool. “Had to pick this one up from the hotel.”
There are cheers and yells of surprise from all around, none of which include words that Dong Sik actually processes, but he does process that there is a very distinct someone standing across the room from him, and that very distinct someone has his hands in his coat pockets, and that very distinct someone is brushing the rainwater off his just barely curling hair, and that very distinct someone’s eyes are already curling a little bit at the edges, which strikes Dong Sik dumb because he realizes that this very distinct someone’s eyes actually have the finest of wrinkles and that’s when he realizes that it is
Han Joo Won.
Joo Won looks up and smiles, and Dong Sik is sure that this is when the world caves for good.
[or: twenty years ago, han joo won and lee dong sik saved each other. twenty years later, they save each other again in ways that neither actually expected (though they hoped for it. god, they hoped for it).]
Kissing by EttelwenAilinon Their breaths are turning into vapor as soon as they leave their mouths. It's really cold. His nose and cheeks sting a little. Dong Sik takes his hand and puts it into his pocket. And oh, that has become a thing too now. Hand holding. Soft, tender, wordless. And Han Joo Won likes it very much too, it makes him feel cared for. He looks over at the man walking beside him. He has longer hair now, even longer than when they first met. He likes it that way and secretly hopes he'll never cut it off again. He wants to run his fingers through it, to feel the silkiness. And he wants to kiss him and he hates the idea of it.
fit perfectly by kittychi (bojangler) People speak of lover’s gazes and lover’s kisses, but no one has told him of lover’s hand winding through his own.
their love is understated but here dongsik is, holding his hand in the middle of a street.
From The Place The World Forgot by Stitch_Me_Not Han Joo-Won falls into the galaxy that is Lee Dong-Sik. Lee Dong-Sik makes sure he doesn't get too lost.
Truth Is A Point Of View by capitalismwasamistake After everything that went down in Manyang and the aftermath, Han Juwon and Lee Dongsik are comfortable never being in the spotlight again and instead are doing the less flashy but important work of finding missing people in Gangwon-do.
The professionalism they display at work leads their Chief and colleagues to believe they aren't close and even dislike each other, demonstrating once again that reality is not what it seems at first glance.
Trying to work through their burdens and heal, they encounter a stray white Husky in need of a home.
Life has a way of working out after that.
Rating: Teen
but you could make me a drink (or a latte) by Katierosefun “That’s all, thank you.” A quick look to Joo Won’s nametag, then a little smile. “Han Joo Won.”
And, it turned out that this nut job said Joo Won’s name nicely. Voice light and teasing, partial drawl and partial laugh—which Joo Won didn’t get, because it wasn’t like his own name was funny by any means, but all the same, something in him twitched at the tone.
“Can I get a name?”
“Lee Dong Sik.”
[or: the coffee shop jwds au]
make it last by Katierosefun “Are you saying that you would miss me, Lee Dong Sik?” Joo Won asked quietly. He could have sworn he saw Dong Sik’s eyes flick down to his own mouth too.
“Hm.” Dong Sik’s gaze locked onto Joo Won’s. “Maybe. I have yet to figure that out.”
i carry my love for you like my teeth by 2ndstartotheright “Do you want me to say that I drove all this way because I wanted to see you, Han Joowon?”
The kettle clicks off loudly in the silence. Joowon lets out a shuddering breath.
“Just–,” Joowon starts, even as he feels his heart clench wetly inside his chest. “Don’t say things you don’t mean. I hate when people do that.”
 ———
Dongsik presses his hands against Joowon’s spine, and his ribs against Joowon’s own, pushing, and pushing until the dirt on Dongsik’s hands start to polish all of the sharp points of his bones.
we accept the love we think we deserve by ceramide (StrawberrySpring) Han Ju Won doesn't think he deserves to be kissed.
Tinted chapstick by Sukie_Kagamine "What's that?" He asked as he stepped closer to Juwon, who was in front of the hallway mirror, all ready for work.
"Oh, this?" The man turned to look at him, and gave him a small smile. He held out a tube of lipstick towards Dongsik. It looked brand new. "It's this tinted chapstick Jihoon gave me as a gift the other day. It's quite nice actually."
Blue Blood On Your Hands by bluetrees Han Joo Won gets stabbed and Dong Sik finds that he can't do this anymore.
Cold Like a Driven Nail by SummerTeaPrince Han Juwon decides, when his car breaks down in the reed beds, that he should walk to Manyang. As a city boy he underestimates the weather.
Cleaned up thread fic
Peloton Peril by SummerTeaPrince Juwon falls off his exercise bike, gets pneumonia and the fever leads to an awful lot of confusion.
A cleaned up threadfic from twitter.
to unhaunt a home by reqvicm “Joowon-ah...” he called once more, somewhere between concerned and slightly annoyed, then grabbed him by the arm to stop Joowon. “Don't be like this now. I'll handle things, I promise. I mean, we're basically like family now, right?”
Joowon turned back around, perplexed. “What?”
Hyuk nodded innocently, “Yeah. The three of us. So just let me-”
“You're out of your mind,” Joowon hissed, forcefully pulling himself out of the grip the older still had on his arm. “We'll never be family, so just cut the crap.”
OR
5 times Hyuk regards them as family and the 1 time Joowon finally has the heart to return the sentiment.
rome wasn't built in one day. by AconitumPrimula Dongsik rarely ever shows it, but he too is scared to lose.
Kind of five times and one-time trope but also not, just very angsty, I am sorry in advance. (Minor edits will happen in the next two days for links and such!)
infinite realms contain its past by readingnotes He raised his eyes to meet Dong Sik’s in the mirror and paused. There was a crease between his eyebrows, an indication of a hypothesis confirmed, and it brought Joo Won back to the night in the rain, the revelation and heartbreak in Dong Sik’s eyes as he found Lee Yoo Yeon’s murderer. This was a similar devastation wrapped in glass-like eyes, and it shattered Joo Won. He shuddered, and his fingers shook because, because, because: Lee Dong Sik stared at his bare back, eyes flickering across scars and history, taking in a crime scene and solving it within seconds.
In the mirror, their eyes met. Understanding passed through his gaze before a cold, closed look settled. “Yah, Han Joo Won.”
Joo Won whirled around, pressed his back against the sink. “Don’t.”

Can’t believed I landed myself in another rare pair purgatory. 😅😂🤣😭 There are only 4 fics with the Han Joo Won/Yoo Jae Yi tag on Ao3 (out of more than a thousand stories) and none are specifically about that pairing.
Though one of those is an amazing fic with Lee Dong Sik/Park Jeong Je as the main pairing. I was desperate enough to read it for HJW/YJY, but it was so brilliantly written that it will be my BE post-canon headcanon for how it wrapped up the whole story for each character in the story and gave each a HE. The characterizations were also inline with my own interpretation of canon, so it was simply perfection. I could not ask for more, really.

On completely unrelated note I think it's a shame we never get to see jwds doing actual detective work outside their ultimate "put these bastards behind the bars" quest. Like give me countless overtime hours at the station together, empty cups of coffee piling on the desks. DS showing up at JW apartment with a case file "Did you steal the classified documents? Again?" "How could I?...I made copies ".
Them competing who memorizes more details about suspects or witnesses and driving their co-workers crazy by finishing each other sentences.

I've never read English fanfictions of K-Dramas before, but recently I watched Beyond Evil and it made me go digging AO3 right away. After reading several works, I wanted to write down a few thoughts and some information on names/titles as a native Korean speaker.
It sounds extremely weird when Joo Won calls Dong Sik "Dong Sik" or "Lee Dong Sik" in normal circumstances. In Korea, it is a taboo to call someone older than you by just their name. Whenever this happens in a fic, I can't help to think like, "Joo Won, are you trying to get punched by Dong Sik?! Why are you being so rude all of a sudden??" Of course, we saw that Joo Won calls Dong Sik "Lee Dong Sik" a couple of times in the show, but it was only when he was infuriated or really frustrated by Dong Sik.
Similarly, Yu Yeon would never call Dong Sik "Dong Sik." Maybe "Lee Dong Sik" if she is really mad, but I don't think she is someone who would ever act like that towards her older brother. She'll always call him "oppa (오빠)."
Whenever Dong Sik calls Joo Won "Joo Won" in a fic, my brain automatically translates it to "Joo Won-ah (주원아)" because that's just how you normally call someone younger than you by their name in Korean. In other words, Dong Sik wouldn't literally call Joo Won "Joo Won (주원)"; it'll always be "Joo Won-ah (주원아)." Basically, the rule is that you put "ah (아)" or "ya (야)" at the end of a name depending what it ends with; if a name ends with a consonant, you add "ah (아)," and if a vowel, "ya (야)." Therefore:
Joo Won (주원) -> Joo Won-ah (주원아)
Jae Yi (재이) -> Jae Yi-ya (재이야)
Ji Hoon (지훈) -> Ji Hoon-ah (지훈아)
Ji Hwa (지화) -> Ji Hwa-ya (지화야)
Yu Yeon (유연) -> Yu Yeon-ah (유연아)
You can't use a name + "ah (아)" or "ya (야)" as a subject or object in a sentence, as this convention only happens when you call someone. Because of this, the following sentence sounds awkward:
Dong Sik said, "My Joo Won-ah is such a handsome man."
Strictly speaking, "친구 (friends)" are people who have a bond and are the same age in Korea. That's why we can say Dong Sik, Jung Je and Ji Hwa are friends. Then what about others? At school or work, we can use "선배 (sunbae)" and "후배 (hoobae)." If you're familiar with Japanese terms "senpai" and "kouhai," they are exactly the same meaning. "Sunbae" is someone who is older than you and/or started school/career earlier than you. To your "sunbae," you're their "hoobae." In the show, Sang Yeop, Dong Sik's old partner, calls Dong Sik "sunbae."
However, if you become more intimate (not in a sexual way!) with someone, or if that someone is your family, other terms such as "형 (hyung)," "누나 (noona)," "오빠 (oppa)" and "언니 (unnie)" can be used as follows:
Younger male -> Older male = "형 (hyung)"
e.g. Ji Hoon -> Dong Sik
Younger male -> Older female = "누나 (noona)"
e.g. Ji Hoon -> Ji Hwa
Younger female -> Older male = "오빠 (oppa)"
e.g. Yu Yeon -> Dong Sik
Younger female -> older female = "언니 (unnie)"
e.g. Jae Yi -> Ji Hwa
Plus, you can add the person's name in front of each term. One thing to remember is that you should put "yi (이)" at the end of the name if it ends with a consonant. If it ends with a vowel, no extra syllable is necessary. For example:
Dong Sik (동식) -> Dong Sik-yi hyung (동식이 형)
Jae Yi (재이) -> Jae Yi noona (재이 누나)
Sometimes, you add "nim (님)" to "hyung (형)" and "noona (누나)" to be even more polite/show more respect. Therefore, "hyung (형)" becomes "hyung-nim (형님)," but for "noona (누나)," it becomes "noo-nim (누님)," not "noona-nim (누나님)." Once, Oh Sub refers to Nam Sang Bae "Sang Bae hyung-nim (상배 형님)" while talking to Jung Chul Moon after Nam Sang Bae was arrested. "Nim (님)" can be also added to a job title, so in the show we hear "소장님 (Substation Chief + nim)", "경사님 (Lieutenant + nim)," "경위님 (Inspector + nim)," etc. plenty times. Personally, it is funny to watch Dong Sik sometimes call Joo Won "한주원 경위 (Inspector Han Joo Won)" at the beginning and Joo Won sometimes call Dong Sik "이동식 경사 (Lieutenant Lee Dong Sik)" because technically you have to add "nim (님)" in those cases (you know, Joo Won being Dong Sik's superior officer at the time & Dong Sik being older than Joo Won and his "sunbae" in career), but they just want to show they don't like each other that much so bad!
Oh, and Dong Sik calls Joo Won "도련님 (young master)" from time to time, and it reminds me of Merlin calling Arthur "sire" sarcastically. Those young, elite, arrogant and (surprisingly) naive boys...
Anyway, now what I'm trying to figure out is--what would Dong Sik and Joo Won call each other once they start a romantic relationship? For Dong Sik, obviously it'd be either "주원아 (Joo Won/Joo Won-ah)" or "한주원 (Han Joo Won)." For Joo Won? As I've rambled long above, "동식아 (Dong Sik/Dong Sik-ah)" certainly is out of question. "동식 씨 (Dong Sik-ssi)" is slightly better, but it still sounds a little off to me. My personal picks are "이동식 씨 (Lee Dong Sik-ssi)" and "형 (hyung)." For the latter, I'd like to imagine that Joo Won asks Dong Sik if it's okay to call him that at some point. In bed, Joo Won might call Dong Sik "이동식 (Lee Dong Sik)" when he feels like to be a bit dominant or wants to tease/taunt Dong Sik, but not too often. (In one fic I've read, Joo Won says something like "Focus, Lee Dong Sik" while having sex with him and Dong Sik tries to be angry, saying "Yah--" but apparently he couldn't say much else after that. The fic is one of my favorites so far.)
Okay, that's all I guess. I've never written anything this long in English in my life, and honestly I'm a little nervous. Beyond Evil made me do this. I'm going to look for new fics now. (By the way, thank you for your amazing fics, Beyond Evil fic writers! Keep up the good work!)

(Inspired by this post)
"Are you sure you don't want us to try to kill him?" Hester asks. "It would be so much fun."
"And respectful," Anadil says. "Very respectful."
"Do you honestly think he'd be able to beat you?"
Hester shrugs. "If he can't defend himself he can't protect you."
"He deserves to die," Anadil adds, fiddling with her bracelet.
Agatha raises an eyebrow, calling a dancing flame to her hand. "You know I can protect myself. And I don't want him to die."
"He still deserves to. You deserve better."
"Enough!" Agatha leans back in her chair, motioning toward the door. "Reaper and I have work to do."
For a moment, no one moves.
"Is it more poetry?" Dot whispers loudly. "Can I stay? I can help."
Agatha's glower intensifies. Her fingers twitch, making the flame leap higher.
"Whatever," Hester mutters, finally getting to her feet. "Come on, let's go find Sophie." In the doorway, she scowls at Agatha over her shoulder. "When you need him dead, you know where to find us."
Agatha waits till Hester and Anadil are solidly out the door, then grabs Dot's arm before she can leave. "You can come back if you bring flowers and whatever. Nice, sunny ones."
Dot brightens, nodding, and slips out the door.

yo. Beyond Evil figure skating AU?? 👀
Dongsik is an ex Olympic skater who refuses to return to the rink after an accident that put his sister in a coma. Juwon is endlessly blowing through coaches, unable to find one who will work with him ('cause he's a snooty brat).
It didn’t matter how many times he was told it wasn’t his fault, to him it was. If only he’d been paying closer attention to his surroundings—like a good partner, like a good brother—maybe his sister wouldn’t be lying in a hospital bed unable to do anything except breathe and sleep inside an empty void. Dongsik wished he could breathe, wished he could unravel the tendrils of his past from the chokehold it had on him. He wished he could forgive himself, but after twenty years he knew forgiveness would never come.

I should have named this fic "thanks, i hate it" because that's how I feel about it. I don't know why I'm so resentful towards it, I just am.
It's far from the best thing I have ever written but... *gestures vaguely* yeah?
(top tip: if you drink every time hands are mentioned, you'll get drunk)
(I'm going to regret posting this here but... *more vague gestures*)

Where do people post fanfiction nowadays, apart from AO3? I love AO3, but the problem is, it’s blocked in my country. It’s still accessible with a VPN app, but VPN services are being blocked too, so just in case things go awry, I need a plan B, especially because I currently have several fanfics in progress :) Do you post/read fanfics on Wattpad? Somewhere else?
