Yesterday CNN published an article by senior writer Tara John about the UK National Health Service’s newly skeptical stance toward youth gender medicine. The main takeaway, which is big news to observers of this debate, is that the NHS will no longer provide puberty blockers to young people, other than in research contexts. (As for cross-sex hormones, a relatively strict-seeming regime is set to be implemented, and they will be offered to youth only “from around their 16th birthday.”)
As myself and a number of others pointed out, the article contains a sentence that is, in context, rather wild: John writes that “Gender-affirming care is medically necessary, evidence-based care that uses a multidisciplinary approach to help a person transition from their assigned gender — the one the person was designated at birth — to their affirmed gender — the gender by which one wants to be known.” But of course, whether youth gender medicine is medically necessary and evidence-based is exactly the thing being debated, and anyone who has been following this debate closely knows that every national health system that has examined this question closely, including the NHS, has come to the same conclusion: the evidence is paltry. That’s why so many countries, including Sweden, Finland, the UK, and Norway have significantly scaled back access to these treatments for youth.1 So it’s very strange to see this sentence, which reads as though it comes from an activist press release, published in a news article in CNN, an outlet that generally adheres to the old-school divide between news and opinion.
There’s a strong case to be made that CNN’s sentence, as written, is false. Gender medicine is at best unproven, when it comes to the standards society (and regulatory bodies) expects medical researchers to adhere to. The situation with youth gender medicine is particularly dicey, given that this is a newer area of medicine suffering from an even severer paucity of quality studies.
It would be bad enough for this sentence to have appeared in one article on one of the most important news websites in the world. But here’s the thing: this wasn’t the first time. Rather, this exact sentence, and close variants of it, has been copied and pasted into dozens of CNN.com stories over the last few years, as a Google search quickly reveals. 
This sentence, and its close variants, appear over and over and over. I asked my researcher to create a list of all the instances he could find. Here’s what he sent back, in reverse chronological order.

I haven’t triple-checked every single one of these, but it’s undeniable that effectively the same words have appeared in about three dozen CNN articles since May of 2022, which was already years after the present wave of European nations rethinking these treatments had begun. 
When I asked CNN about this, I heard back from someone there who explained on background that it’s standard for outlets to provide reporters with guidance about accurate and appropriate language. While that’s true, it doesn’t really answer my question. Sure, it’s not unusual for an outlet to have a house style, sometimes enshrined in a stylebook, that provides rules about how to refer to, for example, individuals in the United States who lack legal status. They used to be called “illegal immigrants,” and now they’re often called “undocumented immigrants,” or language to that effect. This is a fairly normal process by which language changes and, sometimes as a result of a push-pull between outlets and advocacy groups, outlets decide which changes to make and when. So you may or may not agree with the fact that many outlets have switched from “biological sex” to “sex assigned at birth” when discussing trans issues, but the underlying process of switching from one phrase to another is standard and occurs in many areas. 
This is quite different. You do not generally see the same complex sentence pasted over and over and over into news stories written by different authors and published in different sections. I asked CNN if it could provide me any other examples of CNN.com publishing the same sentence in multiple stories by different authors, and posed the same question in an email to Virginia Moseley, the CNN executive editor who, according to the website, “oversee[s] international and domestic news operations across platforms.” I didn’t hear back about this.
This copy-paste job is journalistically problematic for a number of reasons. For one thing, it suggests that CNN has decided, at the editorial level, that its institutional stance is that youth gender medicine is “medically necessary” and “evidence-based.” While they’re being used somewhat colloquially in these articles, these terms have fairly specific definitions in certain medical and legal contexts, and treatments only qualify for such designations if they have exceeded a certain evidentiary benchmark based on solid published research. That is not the case here — far from it, actually. As written, this is a deeply misleading sentence.
The language also puts CNN writers in an awkward position. Does each and every bylined author of these stories believe that youth gender medicine is “medically necessary” and “evidence-based”? Maybe they do (which would be disturbing), but the fact is that they didn’t write these sentences — they, or one of their editors, grabbed that language from somewhere else and pasted it in. They are effectively outsourcing their own judgment on a hotly contested controversy to their employer. This is not what journalists are supposed to do, and, at the risk of repeating myself, it’s significantly different from a reporter rolling their eyes when using language like “undocumented immigrant” or “sex assigned at birth,” rather than their own preferred verbiage. Those are rather small-stakes linguistic quibbles, different not only in degree but in kind from the question of whether or not youth gender medicine is medically necessary and evidence-based. And it goes without saying that a CNN reporter who does develop doubts about youth gender medicine is likely to be deterred from investigating further by the fact that their bosses have already decided that this is the way they’re going to cover this subject — say the line, Bart. Why bother?
It’s a pattern, unfortunately. Many outlets dug themselves into a deep hole on this issue by simply acting as stenographers and megaphones for activist groups rather than doing their jobs. And now that there is ever-mounting evidence undercutting the loudest activist claims, climbing out of this hole is going to be awkward. But there’s no other option, really. Because right now there’s absolutely no reason to take CNN.com seriously on this issue — the site has proven, demonstrably, that it doesn’t take itself seriously on this issue.

I cannot find the name of a supervisor nor do I remember the name of the woman from the program who called me tonight.
I never met her. I only met D#### ---- from ##$$$$$.
I applied for the program for a worker to help with light housekeeping because as K#### knows, I have been financially limited for years.
I have ongoing issues health wise and I am physically limited, yes, in that I cannot stand or walk for long periods.
I have the federal Disability Tax Credit because of this.
I only met D#### and not the Supervisor nor the person for this program from the ##### area.
Therefore she had no basis to judge me.
Physically, mentally or otherwise.
She was basing her information on what the women from the Agency was reporting to them.
When they came here, they realized the house needed deep cleaning and they started to help to a degree.
But that came to an end last Friday when one of the women, more or less on an outspoken moment decided to speak to me in a way that in my opinion was uncalled for and mean.
What she accused me of was not true. I stupidly tried to argue and asked her to leave those areas for me to handle personally.
She refused and leading the way, walked out and taking the younger woman with her. She said it was unsafe and they were walking out and to clean my house myself.
I later called the Agency and apologized for my behavior but didn't appreciate how the woman talked to me, etc. I also said they were doing a good job.
Woman on the phone said, "No worries, " and hung up.
Tonight I got the Dear John phone call from the new social worker handling the issue. She spoke her name fast I had no clue. Same with her Supervisor. No idea the person's name. I believe he called me one night when D##### was sick and stood me up on our agreed appointment.
She said that based on the women's assessment of me , I didn't need help personally with anything physical or mental and therefore I wasn't eligible for their program because it was only light housekeeping they had to offer and I needed someone to deep clean.
She said the same was true of other Agencys and because of my not needing physical or mental help, I wasn't eligible for support to pay a private worker either from the Province either.
She said that they were dropping me and they were closing my file.
I said it won't be me judging you ... but do what you have to do based on your rules. I forgive you.
I also said when a person is so far I into the financial hole like I am, there's no getting out and that the system is purposely designed for people to fail.
I am not eligible for any NB Repair Program because I owe taxes for my house.
I am on the list for housing and have been for years. Nothing.
I would list this in a heart beat, but nothing.
I keep getting the house up for sale for tax bills ... I am unemployed and on sick benefits that will run out in January.
My house needs major repairs and cannot afford to fix it. Likely not safe to live in, but here it is.
A rock and a hard place. System is designed for people to fail.
But those women, one of them that Friday said some very cruel things to me that I feel was unfair and not true.
And they pay me back by reporting to the worker that I am not physically or mentally disabled and therefore not eligible for their services or even for the Program from the Department.
Well, for starters they are not Dr's. No medical degree and one of the women fought with me. Hardly the best judge of anyone, in my opinion.
Forgive my rant, but a lot of your "rules" leave people adrift.

To me, “barriers to inclusion” refer to something more than external forces that make it difficult for inclusive education to truly flourish in schools. One of the biggest barriers I see is inclusive language since there is debate within the disability community on whether to use person-first language or identity-first language when describing a person who has a disability. Some people instead prefer identity-first language as a way of emphasizing what they consider an important part of their identity.

Language evolves. When talking to or about individuals with disability, I was taught to use person-first language. However, there are some autistic self-advocates (as they would like to be referred) who have recently been challenging that autism cannot be separated from the individual as it is an identity-defining feature, and person-first language suggest undesirable traits and stigmatizing views (Vivanti, 2019). For instance, it is not common to say “person who is beautiful." If a community cannot even agree on how to be called, how can it truly be united?

How does the design of your classroom affect student learning?
The physical structure of a classroom greatly affects student learning. For instance, in a traditional classroom setup, students may be more inclined to work independently and shy away from participating in group work. Having desks in groups or using tables, on the other hand, may encourage students to collaborate. Furthermore, having different areas in the classroom with flexible seating gives students choice on what works best for them.
How does your teaching pedagogy change, based on the makeup of students in your classroom?
My pedagogical style will always depend on the makeup of the students. For example, if I am teaching in a class with big ability differences, I will definitely provide more choice and differentiation, and perhaps focus more on passion projects in order to create more engagement. Similarly, if there are a lot of English Language Learners in my class, I will make sure to always include linguistic explanations  and accommodations in all subjects. On the other hand, if I am teaching in a class that is more or less culturally homogeneous (like in Japan, where I taught for several years), I will take the time to familiarize myself with the culture and make sure to include topics that would be relevant to the students.
What are the similarities in differentiation in an elementary school vs a high school?
Just like in elementary classroom, high school teachers can differentiate in four ways: content, process, product, and learning environment. Regarding content, there are different electives students can take, and even within a subject (i.e. Math), there are different levels. Likewise, teachers have the freedom to deliver material, assess students, and design their classrooms in a variety of ways.
What differentiation considerations need to be made specific to teaching in a high school?
In Surrey, there is a B.A.S.E.S. (Building Academic, Social and Employment Skills) program in some high schools. This modified program focuses on social skills, employment skills, and functional academic skills that are relevant to the work place and community. Because of the modified curriculum, students do not receive a Dogwood Certificate. I think that having such a program is important because the focus is on functional academics – not everyone needs to know non-Euclidean geometries or Coulomb’s law. Even now as a grown-up, I know many of those with whom I attended high school that did not choose to go to university, and many are very successful in their chosen fields. I think special consideration need to be given to what the student wants to do after high school.

5 Things I Love About Being in the Service
With recruiting as one of the biggest focuses right now when it comes to the service, I decided I’ll do two separate blogs about the 5 things I love about being in the service and 5 major considerations anyone should think about before joining which will come at a later time.  I want to start by expressing that everyone experience in the service is different and I can only share things from my view from my career.  I am currently an Army Officer with 17 years of service where I hold the rank of Major. I started my career in 2006 by enlisting in the Army Reserves to help pay for school and had no idea it would be my first professional career after college.    In 2008 I switched over to the Louisiana National Guard where I was able to respond to various state emergencies such as Hurricane Gustav (2008) and other events within Louisiana.  In 2010 I graduated from Northwestern State and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant where I have been an active-duty Soldier since. I’ve been deployed to Afghanistan and had a chance to see the world throughout my time of being in.      
Educational Benefits
Since graduating high school, I completed 5 college degree programs where the military financially contributed to. During my undergraduate years I served in the Army Reserves for 2 years and the National Guard for 2 years.  I took advantage of every opportunity that was available for education and was able to collect on benefits such tuition assistance, the GI Bill, the addition $350/monthly kicker, along with my monthly drill pay.  As an undergraduate student, my educational benefits alone were able to fund my monthly bills.  When I started my professional career in the Army after graduation, I was able to collect tuition assistance to fund my 1st graduate degree.  When going for my Doctorate I was able to use my GI Bill and when I completed my last degree in Kansas the Army paid all the costs since it was a part of the course I was attending.  Because of all my years in the service I qualified for programs where any loans I took out were forgiven.  My advice to anyone whether you go to college or a trade school is to have the service support whatever goals you have in mind
 Financial Stability, Retirement, and Career Potential
The Army gave me that experience of graduating college and immediately working in a career where I could support myself financially.  I didn’t know it at the time but the annual salary for an officer who started their career fell within the top 19% in the US at the time.  Because I served 4 years as Reservist/National Guard Soldier before starting my active-duty career I was making an additional $1,000 monthly compared to my peers who were just starting.  In 2010 as a 2nd Lieutenant, I made $60K and by 2015 I was clearing 100K. The other benefit I is that with more rank that is earned and with every year of just serving we get a raise to help us keep up with the economy.  Also, based on the cost of living in certain areas could determine increased benefits such as a higher housing allowance. The base pay of all service members along with benefits is public knowledge online and allows predictably in the future. The Army also have one of the best retirement systems where you can earn a percentage of your salary for the rest of your life at the 20-year mark along with collecting on VA benefits.  Also, when getting out and starting my next career it’s 6 figure jobs that I qualify for so the potential of having 3 checks monthly and a financially comfortable lifestyle is possible in my post military career. It can also help when wanting to start my own business or wanting to go to law school which is still a goal of mine.

During my time of being in service, I never had to pay for a medical or dentist appointment.  I also never had to pay for any prescription medicine.  Anytime I had a medical emergency when being away from home, the Army worked with me to get help from the hospital that was close by so I could be seen.  I had various procedures conducted and get annual checkups where doctors help me monitor various conditions that run in my family.  With highly blood pressure and glaucoma as things I should look out for, I am able to get some of the best resources and information on things I should be on the lookout for to better take care of myself.  Because of my benefits I am to get free therapy sessions which really supported me mentally and helped me adjust throughout the years. I was also able to help peers out who were in the service too by sharing resources.  
 Relationships and Comradery
Being in I’ve been able to come across some great people and build relationships that will last for the rest of my life.  It’s a great feeling knowing that I have friends all over the world and people that would help me in time of need when I’m not living close to my family in Louisiana.  With moving so much I’ve been able to improve my interpersonal skill and blend in with all types of people.    I’ve been able to work with people from all walks of life and gain valuable insight of their story.  I’ve also been able use my various networks such as being in a fraternity and had it grow times 10 along with my membership in other organizations.  I been able to connect with community leaders and be of services in places that I’ve lived along with impacting the lives of those I served with.  If yall talk to any veterans most of them would probably tell you that one of the best things they enjoyed about being in is the people.
 Travel & Experiences
Before joining the Army, I never been on a plane or had travels outside the south.  The only times I would ever leave Louisiana would be to either to visit my mom side of the family in Mississippi or attend family reunions.  Since joining I had the chance to travel all over the world and experience other cultures.  I’ve also had a chance to travel all over the United States.  Since going active duty in 2010 I’ve moved a total of 7 times and took advantage of every move.  Also, with joining the military came unforgettable experiences.  I’ve shot and trained with weapons that others could only dream about.  I’ve had the opportunity to jump out of planes and helicopter over 20 times, and participate in training that was just downright fun.  I was also able to make the best of time in service by attending various military schools that included learning how to jump from planes, packing parachutes, and repelling from helicopters.
 Life:  Currently I’m supporting training in California but I look forward to coming home to Shreveport at the end of the month for a few days before going back over seas.  I l cant wait to just eat good food and catch up with my parents and friends.  One thing I’m learning is that other states have decent food but nothing comes close to the food or feelings of just being home 😊.

The 3,500 available seating area apparently not for locals. I was referring to the opening prices. The new ones beyond the reach of most locals. The few that can afford that kind of money will not spend it for a few hours of Buffett splendor. If the Key West Citizen wants to perform a service for its readers, it should do an investigatory story of how ticket sales came to be in the hands of Ticketmaster and how much the City gets as their cut. I'm sure Key West participates. If there is anything where people have a right to know, the pricing of Amphitheater tickets is the issue! I concluded in my 1/18 blog that Ticketmaster's openings cost for tickets left a sour taste in my mouth. I close today's blog with ".....it leaves a sour taste in everyone's mouth!" A doctor visit yesterday with my primary care physician Dr. Norris. First time in 7 months. The July Tampa operation left me down on the medical profession in general. I had been seeing tons of doctors. The way it is when you are in your mid 80's. So I said, Screw it! Stop doctoring. Does not make sense. I know it. My visit yesterday was recognition of my own stupidity. Ergo, I am back to doctoring. Next visit an appointment with my heart doctor. It was close to 5 when I left he doctor's office. Decided to grab a dinner out somewhere. Decided on Happy Hour at Roostica. I no longer drink. However the Happy Hour menu has been praised forever it seems by many. Time for me to try it. A good deal! I enjoyed limoncello wings. One of my favorites and a diet Pepsi. Total bill $13. I was impressed the place was almost completely full. People doing the specials and regular menu. I have always recommended Roostica. Best Italian restaurant in the area. The sauce is like my grandmother made. 'Nuff said. On this day in 1898, the Battleship Maine was ordered to sail to its death. It was anchored off the Tortugas when ordered to Havana Harbor where it ultimately was blown up. The death of the Maine gave birth to the Spanish-American War. Joseph Morton was an American war correspondent for the Associated Press in the European Theater during World War II. He was captured by German soldiers on 12/26/1944 while in a log cabin high on a mountain in Slovakia with 15 Allied intelligence officers. Morton was covering a U.S. operation for a story. Morton had war correspondent ID requiring him to be treated as a prisoner of war according to the Geneva Convention. The SS for some reason had ordered the summary execution of all "Allied commandos." Morton obviously was not one. The U.S. is the only nation in the industrialized world that has the mass shooting problem. We have not been able to clean up the mess because of the Republican Party.
