Sometimes on a weekend trip to the dog park I love to stop and get a McDonald’s sausage and cheese muffin. Not as healthy as my Cheerios and skim milk, but so tasty.
The McDonald’s by my house has some staffing issues. The last few times my wife or I have gone there (which isn’t often) we got someone else’s order which had more food than what we selected. Next time I go I’m going to ask for a single ketchup packet and see what I’m rewarded with.
I rounded up all the change that inexplicably accumulates in the house and cars. My bank won’t count change and only accepts rolled coins for deposit. I refuse the offer of free paper tubes for the coins. Once again I took a ton of coins to the grocery store and put them in the self checkout machine.
It amounted to $4.52, including 61 pennies. It felt like using a big, fat coupon. That, or I can consider my $2 in lotto tickets were free! I also enjoy the sound of the coins clunking inside the machine. I imagine something destroying them. Die, coins, die.

Bad News of the Week:
Months ago, the German Green party announced their claim to the chancellorship for the first time in their history since 1980 and yesterday proclaimed Annalena Baerbock the official candidate at their party conference. This was already clear since the co-chairman of the party, Robert Habeck, gave her this seat a few weeks ago. The result was a surge in the polls, even the conservatives were overtaken, and the German media landscape was virtually enamored with this refreshingly young and unconventional (or, as it says on the flip side, inexperienced and proverbially green) lady.
What came next could be called a reality check: the candidate's curriculum vitae contained inconsistencies that could be picked apart with relish, the party was reviled by its political rivals as being incapable of governing, amateurish communications work by the apparatus provided avoidable attack surfaces, and the polls virtually plummeted. Well, the usual rules of political theater also apply to the Greens. That's how it works when you venture out of the comparatively comfortable setting of opposition work and onto the real stage.
Unfortunately, the electorate proves once again in the current demoscopy that it is despondent and visionless. Nobody has anything against the environment - but isn't it enough to separate the garbage for recycling? To do without air travel, to renovate houses to make them more energy efficient, to pay more at the gas station, to limit consumption from the Far East? Exactly: to change one's own lifestyle! That is then probably nevertheless a little too much demanded. It costs money and a lot of effort. Can't it be done more comfortably? And more slowly?
And so Armin Laschet, the uninspired and lackluster candidate of the conservative CDU party, could reach power in a sleeper car. And he would lack the will to shape the future; the program would largely be "business as usual" so as not to scare anyone away. But that's not enough. We all know that the dominant task of the next decade is and must be the issues of climate, sustainability, the environment, species and nature conservation, and so on. All of these are the Green Party's very own issues. But uncomfortable. We prefer to sit back and leave this to the generations of tomorrow.
Therefore, one of the probably most important program points of the current party conference is the lowering of the voting age to 16 years. This would give the young a share of decisive votes that at least comes a little closer to the responsibility they didn't ask for.
Good News of the Week:
The British have invented many things: The internet, James Bond, penicillin, Winnie-the-Pooh, the steam engine, soccer, the "British Invasion" (Beatles, Rolling Stones & Kinks), the vacuum cleaner, fish and chips... But also colonialism, Brexit, plastics, concentration camps, lukewarm beer.... but let's not go there.
A truly remarkable innovation was founded now 60 years ago by British lawyer and politician Peter Benenson: Amnesty International, one of the very first NGOs. And an extremely important one. At a time when even in Europe dictators like Lukashenko or populists like Orban can simply ignore human rights that are actually self-evident and degrade the judiciary to political stooges, independent institutions that fight for justice are downright essential.
Under the motto "Globalize Justice!" Amnesty's charter states that it stands for building mutual respect, fighting discrimination, demanding justice, ensuring the physical and mental integrity of all people, protecting human rights in armed conflict, refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons and migrants, and women and girls, and promoting the economic, social and cultural rights of everyone. Wow, that's what I call a mission statement.
Actually, this sounds like the basics that every state should stand up for its citizens. But since this is not so, such admonishing voices are needed. Even here. "Reporters Without Borders" sees Germany in the recently published ranking of press freedom only on 13th place. The reason is the increased attacks on journalists - 65 in the last year alone and all from the corner of increasingly right-wing Corona deniers. Unbelievable. So for us and everyone on this planet: May the candle that asserts itself in the logo of Amnesty against barbed wire burn for a long time!
Personal happy moment of the week:
The kids like barbecues. So their dad promised them to finally fix the broken grill this weekend. Unfortunately I didn't succeed, the body was only held together by the rust. Therefore, we went to the hardware store. Actually, we just wanted to look at different models, and then at home and in peace to think about which new we want to buy. But then we took a kit with us, which I assembled at home. And so tonight we finally have Bernese sausages again, as it should be - from the grill and not only from the pan. And daddy can finally inaugurate his "Bratort" apron - but unfortunately only German speakers understand this play on words with the crime TV series "Tatort"...
As I write this...
...I am sitting on a butt that hurts a little. After all, we did our first little bike ride of the year today - our favorite loop to a little Bavarian beer garden in Warngau to enjoy the now reopened outdoor dining. Apparently, I'm no longer used to either. Fun fact: my son cycled long distances with his mask on because the air seemed "too dry" for him.

Two centuries after it first graced Bernese tables, the Zungenwurst, or “blood tongue” sausage, has been added to the country’s list of geographically protected products. The accolade was announced on Thursday by the Federal Office for Agriculture and means the sausage will henceforth be entirely protected from imitations produced elsewhere in Switzerland or the European Union. The Bernese Zungenwurst, literally “tongue sausage”, was first recorded in 1798 when it was a prime dish for the Swiss banquet following a victory over France at the battle of Neuenegg. Food being scarce at the time, participants arrived with whatever they could find – which included plenty of pig tongues. A bit of background on Appenzell
When people ask me where my family is from and I say Appenzell, I usually get the response: “Like the cheese?” Yes, that’s the Appenzell of my childhood. It is where my family has farmed since they immigrated there from South Tyrol in the late 1500’s.
Having a sense of pride in my heritage and knowing that the fifteenth canton to join the Swiss confederation does not get enough attention, I set out to rediscover Appenzell. More specifically, Appenzell (the town) and the half canton it governs, Appenzell Innerrhoden.
In 1597, the once unified canton of Appenzell split into two because of religious preferences. Today, Catholic Innerrhoden is the more touristic of the half cantons, having more of the Alpstein mountains in it.
Thanks to the Äscher mountain restaurant making it to the cover of a National Geographic book and being mentioned my Ashton Kutcher on social media, the restaurant has become a place of pilgrimage in the Swiss Alps. If you plan on going, please remember to bring proper footwear – at least trail shoes if not hiking boots.
A hiker’s paradise – anytime of the year
During summer, the Alpstein is a hiker’s paradise. (But please keep your clothes on as naked hiking is now illegal in the canton.) Two popular destinations are Ebenalp and Hoher Kasten. They are challenging and beautiful, so these hikes will not bore experienced hikers. They are also tame enough to serve as starter hikes for those just getting into Switzerland’s (true) national sport. And for those not keen to hike up a mountain just yet, there are cable cars that will bring you to the summit and down again without breaking a sweat.
Winters in Appenzell are special when compared to what one typically expects from the Swiss Alps. Unlike the Bernese Oberland or the mountains of the Valais or Graubünden, there is not much downhill skiing here in Appenzell (except at Ebenalp). This means that you are free of skiing crowds.
Appenzell offers everyone time and space to relax and rejuvenate. There are nearly 55 km of winter hiking paths of varying lengths and difficulties, or 75 km of marked snowshoeing trails. All of them surrounded by evergreen forests and with views of the Alpstein and its most famous peak, the Säntis.
Lodging in style at Hof Weissbad
For a perfect getaway to Eastern Switzerland, stay at the four-star Hof Weissbad, just minutes from the town of Appenzell. Footsteps away from the hotel, there is a romantic lantern lit trail through the nearby forest.

Enjoying some local Appenzell music
I would recommend staying at the hotel on a Wednesday and enjoying their Appenzeller evening featuring typical local cuisine and live music in the bar. You will also see people dancing to the traditional stringed music featuring the violin, upright bass, dulcimer and often piano and/or accordion.
Seeing this event may get you interested enough to visit the Roothuus Gonten Center for Appenzeller and Toggenburger Music. More of an archive than a traditional museum, this establishment has thousands of copies of sheet music and is busy digitizing their archive so that this musical heritage (which is quite different from the rest of Swiss-folk music) is preserved.
In Appenzell, there is also a good chance you will hear the dulcimer because it is an integral part of Appenzeller music. That said, you will most likely hear one of Johannes Fuch’s dulcimers. A second generation dulcimer builder, he is one of only six remaining craftsmen in Switzerland. The special wood he uses has been dried and aged for 70 years. This does wonders for the sound.
Biberli, Pantli, & Co.
If sport is not really your thing, then you might be interested in checking out more of Appenzell’s culinary heritage. From bakeries to cheese dairies and butchers, there is plenty of food to be had and enjoyed. A visit to the cheese dairy in Stein will show you how the famous Appenzeller cheese with its secret recipe is made. You will also get a chance to taste the different versions of the cheese from low fat to aged full fat.

A visit to the town of Appenzell should be on your list, too. It is very beautiful and attracts the most tourists in the region, in particular for it house facades.
