finished my re-watch of the show & read brenda’s interview about what happens after the finale, and wanted to think up my own interpretation of what happens to the characters after the show - based off a blend of the canon, the actor’s person opinions on what would have happened to their characters , and also my own opinion on what would have been realistic for everyone. just for fun! under a cut because its long and i cringe at myself
Ricky stays single for awhile after Amy leaves, focusing on his education and parenting john. Starts to reconnect with Clementine, as friends but also a sweet and innocent crush on both ends as they study together and hang out around the coffeeshop often.
Shortly after they get together - bam! Amy comes back after their agreed upon summer semester in NY, and decides to go to school in CA. She wants Ricky back and to reunite as a little family - still confused and conflicted about what she wants in life. Fueled by a sense of obligation and some semblance of love, Ricky sadly dumps Clementine and gets back with Amy.
They make it official and marry with a courthouse wedding, bringing only John and their parents along - not wanting to waste time on planning a wedding for a third time. They convince themselves that they’re really in love this time, but ultimately, they don’t. Ricky misses Clementine and Amy finally admits there is no excuse behind it, she just doesn’t want to be married to Ricky. Maybe not married to anyone. They divorce just as quickly as they got back together.
Ricky realizes that Clementine was the first person he felt a real, genuine passion and romance for in a long time. He tries to get her back, but she’s hurt and can’t forgive him after being rejected by him for Amy TWICE.
Adrian had dumped Omar for constantly pressuring her about her future and decided to stay and finish her studies here. Her, Ricky, and Jack had been a trio of friends throughout college. She took Ricky’s advice and started therapy. Her life took a positive, free-spirited spin, actually having fun and enjoying herself with casual dating and pursuing her law career! Just as she’s about to move on to law school, Ricky falls for Adrian yet again - after seeing her genuinely change and being her friend the entire time, always with a soft spot for her. They get together, and Adrian finally realizes that she IS genuinely over Ricky, and finally they are both genuinely content in just being FRIENDS.
Adrian, after finally getting to know herself and coming out as bisexual, realizes that she is in love with Grace - who realizes she is a lesbian during her time in college. Maybe only after school and years somewhat apart do they realize their feelings for each other. They get together and stay together, marrying and becoming a power couple of Doctor (heart surgeon Grace) and Lawyer (Adrian! immigration law). They have a bunch of kids - some adopted, two with sperm donors. Wealthy life
After dropping out and divorcing, Amy turns a new leaf and tries to discover herself and what she wants. She uses the money from the house Anne sold to travel the world instead of paying for school - with John in the summer, solo otherwise, and gets an artsy career of sorts while she lives a more nomadic lifestyle. Living a good life. Bisexual. Either John is her only kid or she has another accident baby with Ben in college - but her and Ben do not end up together. Maybe the Boykewich money can fund her lifestyle, lol. I imagine Amy finally just wanting to do her own thing and heal her inner child in adulthood. Not wanting to work a normal job at all, after having no free time in her teens.
Ricky manages to win back Clementine with time, trust, and romance - and they end up marrying, Clementine becomes step-mother to John and they have two more kids together. Happy, stable middle-class family.
Ben goes on to get a bunch of therapy and gets into a succession-esque plot as Leo’s businesses grow bigger and bigger. Idk if he’d be more of a Kendall or Roman Roy. I am choosing to ignore his S5 horrid cartoonish characterization for this entire thing lol
I like to think Henry somehow safely bailed out of joining the army and was Ben’s roommate in NY. Alice too?
Madison does end up a cocktail waitress in Vegas, single and living a hectic life for awhile, but her and Lauren still end up together after a gay rom-com plot pulls them closer together
Jack idfk what he does, stay in college football til he graduates and then ends up a personal trainer on instagram, moves to the valley. never settles down
Ashley gets married to someone completely new in Italy and decides to live in Europe with dual-citizenship, her and amy make up years down the line, and now she’s just the cool ass european aunty of john who visits for major occasions only

The Secret Life of the American Teenager remains my biggest guilty pleasure (and one of my favourite shows in general). Show's hella entertaining (tons of drama and enjoyable yet frustrating characters) and despite being ridiculous and absurd, I've come to cherish it. I think I've come to terms with the open-ended ending though I also appreciate the creator giving her plan for what happened to all the characters (it's not as good as a season 6 or proper conclusion but for those that feel it gives closure to their faves, it's a nice bit of info). I kinda like all of the main 6 characters (some, e.g. Ben, more than others).

So I’m rewatching The Secret Life of the American Teenager and I forgot how toxic all of these characters and relationships are oh my god. Ben vs thinking he’s entitled to anything and everything to do with Amy and the baby as if he has any choice or say in the matter. He’s literally obsessed with her. Honestly this rewatch has me hating Ben now that I’m an adult and I can see all the bullshit from an adults perspective. Honestly Ben and Amy are the two dumbest characters ever, like Ben literally knew her for a few weeks before being like I love you and only dated her for like two months before being like yeah I’ll marry you and take care of your baby even though we’re 15 and Ben’s dad was just okay with it. Not to mention Amy barely taking any responsibility for the baby and thinking she can pawn the responsibility off onto any and everyone else. Honestly Ricky was a lot more responsible than she ever could’ve been at the beginning. This entire show is honestly wild. And Amy’s “best friends” were literal trash. God how did young me watch this and just be like yeah this checks out, seems perfectly normal 🤦🏼‍♀️

The world does not deserve Leo Boykewich. How he had that pretentious ass-fuck of a son, I will never understand, but we do not deserve Leo.

A Toxic Mess of Entertainment - Secret Life of the American Teenager
Quarantine Update: I've started rewatching this mess of a show for the 100th time (its so infuriating, I can never not rewatch it 💀). And I've decided to rate the characters on this show because they're just all so......interesting.
Ricky Underwood: A precious angel. His character development was fucking amazing. He deserved the absolute world and was the best parent to his child. Despite his tragic childhood and his lifestyle choices/inner struggles, he really turned his life around for his son and honestly became my favorite character on this show. His relationship with John was the cutest and I absolutely adored him and Amy (when she wasn't being annoying/immature).
Amy Juergens: Oh Amy.....so damn annoying, but likable at times. Honestly after rewatching this show so many times I've come to the conclusion that she may have had postpartum depression. She had the signs and seemed to resent her own child at times. I will say though, she had her good moments. Like when she actually acted like an adult and not a little kid. Also her cute moments with Ricky. And honestly, Shailene playing her made me dislike the character less lol
Ben Boykewich: Where the hell do I start with this piece of shit. He was slightly decent the first season, but my God wtf happened...I mean he is honestly creepy as hell. So obsessive, compulsive, and manipulative. I don't understand how the hell Amy went back and forth with him when the better man, her baby daddy, was right there the whole time. Although he's a little bitch, the storyline with Adrian and their baby killed me. It hurt me the first time I watched it and every other time I've seen it. Other than that though, he can fall in a sewer.
Adrian Lee: When I watched the show as a young teenager, I couldn't stand her, but being older now, I grew to like her. I loved her growth throughout the series, but I'll admit she did have her shitty moments. She made dumb ass mistakes (sleeping with Ben, going back to Ricky all the damn time, etc.), but I'm happy she got her happy ending. After everything she went through, she deserved it. I also loved the way her friendship with Grace evolved.
Grace Bowman: God, this bitch was annoying as hell for a good 3 seasons. She had her good moments, but she was so insufferable. Especially when it came to Jack. The storyline where she thought her having sex killed her dad will forever be the dumbest yet funniest shit ever 💀
Jack Pappus: He was alright I guess. I'm very indifferent on him. He had good and bad moments. His obsession with Grace was extremely annoying.
Ashley Juergens: I had a love/hate relationship with Ashley. I loved when she'd drag Amy when she was acting dumb, but Ashley herself acted dumb at times. She was a know-it-all and that annoyed me because it lowkey reminded me of myself 💀 at times I forgot she was the younger sister cause she was more mature than Amy lol.
George Juergens: Though he has his obvious flaws, I freaking love him. He's hilarious and I honestly think we need a reboot of this show with him and Moose 💀 also I loved his father/daughter relationship with Ashley.
Anne Juergens: Molly Ringwald is an icon. I didn't care for the character, but I love her lol. "Everybody forgot my 16th birthday" ICONIC.
Betty Boykewich: A character that had me dying of laughter most of the time. She honestly gave the show the light hearted humor it needed. Jennifer Coolidge is a legend.
Leo Boykewich: One of the more likeable parents on this show. I loved when he'd tell off Ben for how dumb he was acting which was almost 24/7. I also loved his relationship with Ricky. He treated him like a second son and it was sweet to watch.
Henry and Alice: I absolutely love them. They were the perfect duo that offered comic relief.
Bunny: LOVE HER. I would have loved to work in a butcher shop with her lol.
Lauren and Madison: Annoying as hell and honestly were never true friends to Amy. They couldn't keep shit to themselves and honestly the show would have been just fine without them. They were irrelevant characters to me 🤷‍♀️
Tom Bowman: I really liked his character. He brought a different feel to the show. I love that he wasn't treated differently despite him having down syndrome. I also love when actors with down syndrome are given a chance to shine and the actor really shined.
Some Thoughts:
With how the show ended horribly, I'm happy knowing the producer came out and said that in the end Ricky and John follow Amy to NY and ultimately they get married. I still cannot believe I watched this show for 5 years and the finale happened the way it did. But knowing this little fact keeps me at peace lol
Despite my obvious hatred for Ben, I lowkey wish he and Adrian had worked out. Yes they were, at times, extremely toxic, but I thought they had great chemistry.
Nora was awesome. I wish her character had been around since the first season. Her dynamic with George was entertaining af
Even though I didn't really care for Jack, I loved his and Tom's friendship.

I know he has his flaws and he definitely made a lot of mistakes but I still like Ben Boykewich from The Secret Life of the American Teenager. The guy was really relatable (dorky, nervous around girls, overly-nice) and lovable in season 1 and I still enjoy him after that. It's frustrating since he makes a lot of mistakes but I think the ridiculousness of the show makes it bearable. Ken Baumann really sold me on the character. The dude was really supportive and kind to Amy in season 1, even after learning about her pregnancy (I really sympathetised, though I can't relate, with him, being the boyfriend to a girl impregnated by another man) and his relationship with Marc Molina (left too soon from the show) was really nice to see. So sweet of him to assure Griffin that he's obviously invited to Leo's wedding in season 2. He was a bit pushy at times but I still love the episode where he and Amy get married (one of my favourites).

I started watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager three days ago. I must admit Bcn is so frustrating, he’s so childish sometimes and he’s so spoiled. Also he’s an hypocrite, he says he loves Amy but he chose not to tell her that he got Adrian pregnant.
