Nightcap
Pairing: Vander x Nicole Etheris
Warning: mentions of alcohol and drunkenness
Tag List: @hyperionshipping @licensedcrime @thatghoulboi @fangedwife @sable-myers @belcanto-selfships
The Last Drop was quiet. Chairs were put up, patrons all gone. The only inhabitants of the bar had been Vander, Nic, Silco, and Benzo after Vander had suggested a nightcap. Benzo drank a little too much and eventually managed to climb down the stairs, most likely passing out on the couch. Silco followed not long after, deciding to head in early. Thus leaving Nic and Vander alone to continue their own conversation.
“The divide between Piltover and Zaun still surprises me,” Nic admitted, her finger tracing the rim of the glass.
“What do you mean?” Vander asked, finishing the pint in his hand.
“It’s a bit of a culture shock if anything— Noxus has its fault, lord knows it does, but there… everyone can achieve whatever they dream. As long as they work hard and fight for their ambitions, it doesn’t matter if they were born in the scummiest back alley or to the highest of noble houses.” She gestured to herself. “Everyone has a fair chance. And then Piltover has the nerve to call themselves the city of progress and claim they’re a city of equality while the people of Zaun are barely getting their scraps.” She took in a deep breath to calm herself. “It’s just not fair.”
Vander hummed, nodding in agreement. “I will admit though, I didn’t ever think a rich girl like you would enjoy slumming it down here with us.”
Nic laughed, looking over at him. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”
“Obviously,” he smiled. “And I don’t think I ever apologized to you for giving you such shit when you first showed up. We just thought you were… well, y’know.”
“I don’t blame you, honestly.” Nic leaned back in her chair. “How could you know I wasn’t from Piltover when I was dressed all fancy?”
“Hmm, I would’ve said snobby,” he teased.
“Snobby?” She scoffed playfully, reaching over and gently shoving his shoulder. “I was not dressed snobby.”
“You absolutely were,” he laughed. “Still can’t believe you stayed though. Silco and I were convinced for a bit that you would’ve left first chance you got.”
“But here I am.” She smiled at him.
“Here you are,” he smiled back softly. “I am glad about one thing.” He reached over to gently thread his fingers through her hair. Nic resisted the urge to lean into his touch. “You cut your hair not long after arriving. I like you with short hair.” His hand cupped the back of her head, and there was a pause as they stared at each other.
And then he leaned in, and before she realized it his lips were on hers. She melted into the kiss despite the sudden heat to her cheeks and the taste of the cheap alcohol he had been drinking. All too quickly the moment was over as he pulled away, and Nic felt a little embarrassed. He had been drinking all night, he had to be drunk by now. There was a chance he wouldn’t remember in the morning.
“Vander, I–”
She was interrupted by him.
“I really like you, Nic. I have for a while. I know I have a few drinks in me but I’m telling the truth. I know I can’t give you much, but I want to be with you. Will you give me a chance?” He took her hand in his. “Will you give us a chance?”
She swallowed thickly, taking in every word he just said. It felt like a dream. Surely this couldn’t be real. She wasn’t that lucky. But what the hell, no better time than the present.
Nic quickly leaned forward and pulled him into another kiss, a little deeper this time. And when they pulled apart she smiled.
“Does that answer your question?” She asked him.
Vander let out a small, nervous laugh. He hadn’t been expecting such an eager response from someone who was so reserved with her thoughts and calculating with her actions.
“A bit, yeah. But… it’s still a little unclear if you like me back,” he teased a little.
“Then me clear it up for you,” she said before leaning to kiss him again.

Mad scenes
... were a popular convention of early 19th Century French and Italian opera, frequently afflicting the soprano heroine. They are famously difficult to sing and were often written as a way for a particularly talented singer to show off her technical prowess in a dramatically plausible way.
- Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor. She stabs her forced bridegroom Arthur to death, then shows up babbling (re: singing) madly about her beloved Edgard in the middle of the wedding party - blood splattered dress and all, few before she passes away as well. (In the original novel, Walter Scott's "Bride of Lamermoor" which was Very Loosely Based on a True Story, Lucia's madness is surprisingly un-aestheticised, so doesn't count).
- Linda in Linda di Chamounix has the unusual good fortune of getting over it and having a happily-ever-after.
- Margeurite in Gounod's Faust goes mad after falling pregnant and committing infanticide, and sings, of course, about flowers.
- Elvira, the heroine of Bellini's I Puritani, goes mad after her beloved Arturo apparently jilts her (he was actually on an important spy mission). She spends all of act II and most of act III in a very extended mad scene before being reunited with Arturo and getting a happy ending.
- Anna Bolena in Donizetti's opera of the same name fades in and out of madness at the place of execution. She imagines she is back at her wedding day to the King, and is terrified lest her true lover, Percy, should discover her treachery. She comes out of it at the end to go to her death with dignity and with dubious words of forgiveness for Enrico and Giovanna on her lips. Imogene in Vincenzo Bellini's Il Pirata loses it completely as her former lover turned Pirate is led to his execution. She ends the scene with a plea to the sun to veil its light, so she will not have to witness the hanging of her true love.
- Ambroise Thomas has an actual Ophelia in his operatic version of Hamlet complete with a mad scene complete with flowers and visions of mermaids.

Celebrating the Brazilian lyric and coloratura soprano ✨Bidú Sayão✨ anniversary! (May 11th 1902 - Mar 12th 1999). 🎉🎈🎁🎊🎂👏 · It's also my anniversary and it's always a pleasure to know I share birthday with the "Brazilian Nightingale". 😄 · Bidú was discovered by maestro Arturo Toscanini (who referred her as "a pequena brasileira"), when she debuted in Roma, later introduced her to Metropolitan Opera were reigned superbly until 1952. She loved music, jewels and fur coats. Her voice was tagged "small" by the critics, but had incredible agility, precise tuning and miraculous high notes, ideal to sing roles like Lucia, Amina, Gilda, Violetta, Rosina, Norina, Manon. Bidu left the stages in 1958. Only a request from composer Heitor Villa-Lobos made her return to sing and in 1959 at Carnegie Hall she interpreted the suite "Floresta do Amazonas". The two went up together to the stage, where the public unknowingly watched the last performance of both the singer as the conductor and composer. · Bidú sings 'Un bel dì vedremo' from Puccini's Madama Butterfly - Voice of Firestone. · #HappyBirthday · #ClassicalMusic #Opera #InstaOpera #OperaSinger · #OperaHouse #MetOpera #ROH · #Concert #Recital · #BelCanto #Baroque · #Composer #GiacomoPuccini #MadamaButterfly · #Stage #Costume #Lyric #Coloratura #Soprano #BiduSayao #Diva #PrimaDonna #Legend #1950s https://www.instagram.com/p/COvPgIyh31s/?igshid=eml4ehuub7c9

Generally speaking: don't cast countertenors for trouser roles. But: someone really should do it for the page Isolier in Le Comte Ory one day.
Discussion question: would that make it more bisexual, or less?

I would like to see a L'Italiana in Algeri production that has 100% meticulously researched 1810s outfits both for the Italians and crucially also for the Algerians. Has carefully recreated Algiers scenery as sets. Just a production that takes it all much, much too seriously. Make the farce into a history drama. It is based on real events after all. Obv keep the throuple.

last year it was comte ory
looks like this year it's l'italiana in algeri

In between all this faust posting let's have a tenor-bass duet that is cheerful and not about how much they lust for one another:
youtube
It's from Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri, it's the bass offering the tenor a wife and the tenor trying to find excuses (because he's already got one). But the more he demands, the more the bass says "oh yeah she is exactly like that".
I like this specific version because JDF does the most delightful rossini wobble throughout.
