Artist: Lady & Bird
Album: Lady & Bird
Songwriters: Bardi Johannsson / Keren Ann Ziedel
Released: 29 September 2003
“Bird, I cannot see a thing.”
An evocative, dreamlike song sung by two orphan characters pleading for help. The production, right down to the childlike voices used, make this song so much more than the sum of its parts.

Nordic duo When 'Airy Met Fairy Announce New Album And Release Brand-New Single, 'Going To A Town'
Teasing new music with last year’s glacial, ‘Blanket Of Sorrow’, Nordic duo When ‘Airy Met Fairy (WAMF) are back to announce their anticipated second album, Esprit De Corps. Their Reimagination of Rufus Wainwright’s original track, ‘Going To A Town’ is out now.  Translated literally from the French expression, Esprit De Corps means ‘spirit of the body’. It’s a concept of grandiose proportions and one that When ‘Airy Met Fairy relay with absolute artistic assurance. Brimming with subtle melody and minimalist instrumentation, their emotive melancholy excavates the foundations of our very being. Ebbing and flowing like a distant memory and simultaneously embodying all that makes us innately human. Developing the stripped back intimacy of their critically acclaimed 2018 debut Glow, WAMF have spent the last few months cultivating their sound’s bewitching aesthetic. Locked up inside instrumentalist, Mike Koster’s empty apartment, sitting upon the derelict wooden floorboards, their bare and intimate surroundings provided an ideal canvas. Infusing elements of meticulously crafted trip-hop, Esprit De Corps paints an honest portrait that retains its own blemishes and imperfections. Vocals/instrumentalist, Thorunn Egilsdottir: “To me this album captivates the essence of who we are as people. No attempt to embellish anything. We left the sounds of me breathing and Mike’s instruments rattling while we switch between intensity and intimacy.” Recorded without any knowledge of what Rufus Wainwright’s original track sounds like, lead single ‘Going To A Town’ was written without any set ideas or predetermined path. Mike Koster: “I insisted on not hearing the original until it's done. I wanted to stay a musical virgin in order to get involved in a creative way.” Reimagining Wainwright’s version, WAMF breathe new life and mystique into their murky, beats-led rendition. Elsewhere, ‘It Was Love’ and ‘That’s My Rock and Roll’ serve up icy lullabies for yearning and unrequited love whilst ‘On Your Own Again’ chronicles biting loneliness and alienation.  Behind dulcet textures of chinking piano keys and swelling atmospherics, ‘Home’ is a dimly flickering ode to those we cherish. Egilsdottir’s vocal flutters above hazy atmospherics on ‘I’ whilst ‘Once’ seeps between the cracks of winding synth arrangements; its verse teaming with tragic awe and wonder. Condemning society’s social media obsession, ‘Inside Your Lungs Superstar’ is a percussive groove grimly ridiculing our dystopian, digital reality. When ‘Airy Met Fairy consists of Iceland’s Thorunn Egilsdottir and Luxembourg’s Mike Koster. First forming in 2015, the pair were spotted by Icelandic musician Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang, Lady & Bird, Starwalker), who went on to produce their maiden single, ‘Intoxicated’. Later releasing their debut album Glow in 2018, it garnered critical praise from the likes of Clash, Line of Best Fit, The 405, Louder Than War and God is in the TV. Touring and playing shows all over the world, WAMF have performed at notable festivals such as The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, Iceland Airwaves and Eurosonic. WAMF’s second album, Esprit De Corps will be released on May 8th with lead single, ‘Going To A Town’ out now. Stay tuned for more info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEgknhHKdwg Read the full article

Starwalker - Johannsson and Dunckel together
Starwalker - Johannsson and Dunckel together http://wp.me/p2BdLk-oI
I had the pleasure of interviewing Bardi Johannsson of Gang Bang last year, and listening to him describe his musical process and the varied types of work he was involved with, from straight albums to theatrical music to film scores, was a reminder of all the possibilities in creative collaboration. His beautiful compositions could set innumerable cameras rolling, even if only those visuals…

French artist JB Dunckel (of Air and Tomorrow’s World) and Icelandic artist Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang, Lady & Bird)have  come together to create some sublime electro-pop under the avatar of Starwalker. Their visual treatment for the smooth and soulful Holidays showcases a robot on a trip of a life-time far away from Earth itself. The track is part of their just issued self titled debut long player. Check it our Video of the Week above and groove to this starry and dreamy composition.

Nordic Duo WHEN ‘AIRY MET FAIRY Release Their Glacial Christmas Single, ‘BLANKET OF SORROW’ - Out Now!
This December sees the return of Nordic duo, When ‘Airy Met Fairy (WAMF) with their glacial Christmas single, ‘Blanket of Sorrow’ - the first song from their upcoming second album, out Spring 2020 via Berlin based label – Motor.  Utilising subtle melody and minimalist instrumentation, ‘Blanket Of Sorrow’ is melancholic piano pop at its best. Frontwoman Thorunn Egilsdottir’s singing feels intimate and vulnerable as she glazes through biting cold soundscapes and swelling horn and organ arrangements. Christmas is about spending time with family and loved ones, a time to congregate and reconnect with the special people in our lives. But despite its warm and unifying nature, it can make someone’s absence only more apparent. ‘Blanket Of Sorrow’ captures that sinking feeling of longing and sadness… the festive season has never felt so lonely. Thorunn:“I felt like this last Christmas when I was celebrating with my family in Reykjavik. I sat down at the piano. It was in a dark room, illuminated by the glowing snow outside. There was no sound in my brother’s house as everybody had gone outside for a walk. And there it was; Blanket of Sorrow. The melody, the lyrics, as if they had always existed.” Bass player Mike Koster:“When we record songs, we do it in my apartment. We like homemade stuff and we like it simple. Blanket of sorrow is a particularly delicate song, so we added merely the necessary. The organ and the bass are the only ornaments around Thorunn’s voice and piano lines.” And don’t miss the accompanying video, produced by Raphael Kindig and Runa Egilsdottir (Thorunn’s sister). Filmed in a semi-museum – a house completely untouched since the 1970s – the video is a nostalgic look into an unhappy couple ‘celebrating’ Christmas.  When ‘Airy Met Fairy consists of Icelander Thorunn Egilsdottir and Luxembourger Mike Koster. The duo is supported visually by art director Runa Egilsdottir, as well as French producer Raphael Kindig. Runa and Raphael create all the artwork and music videos. The band formed in 2015, and were spotted a year later by Icelandic musician Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang, Lady & Bird, Starwalker), who produced their debut single ‘Intoxicated’. The band released their debut album ‘Glow’ in 2018, with acclaim from the likes of Clash, Line of Best Fit, The 405, Louder Than War and God is in the TV. They’ve played shows across the world, from Tokyo to Prague, as well as festivals like The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, Iceland Airwaves and Eurosonic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDJI03TBDWE ‘Blanket of Sorrow’ is out now and will be available on all digital platforms.  Stay tuned for more on the new album next year.
