Dominick's is a pizzeria I kind of pass on my way home from work everyday, but it's just enough out of the way that I never think to stop when I'm hankering for a little something to hold me over 'til dinner. Well, I finally thought to stop recently!....and was pretty disappointed by what I got. First off, the selection was pretty beat. Decent enough variety, but nothing looked that appetizing. I could tell just by looking that the buffalo was most likely not going to be any good. So I settled on trying the BBQ chicken, which looked like my safest bet. Man, I hope it wasn't, because it was even worse than I could have imagined.

First off, it was $5 for this very normal-sized slice of pizza. That is way too much. I don't mind paying $4 when the slice is either huge or just exceptional in some other way. But $5 for some pretty ass pizza is inexcusable. What made it so bad, you ask? Besides the price, there was way too much BBQ sauce (to the point I couldn't taste anything else) and mushy chicken underneath. Yuck. The crust was decent with a bit of chewiness to it, but that didn't do nearly enough to save this slice. Avoid this place, it is NOT worth your money.

forbidden realm four: Crotus Penn Asylum. There are so many stairs and his legs are so short and the Nurse is so Fast. All of his problems seem so small from being punted off a stairwell. If he can figure out how to fake out the Nurse he'd be golden, for there are still many secrets about the Asylum that he seeks to learn, and so much shit to steal.
forbidden realm five: Lery's Memorial Institute. Fuck modern architecture he's fast but he's not that fast. There's more rooms than any one building needs. It's like a palace in there, except if you get lost, you get barbecued by electricity. This is horseshit, but Victor knows one day he will conquer and just wipe Herman out in terms of inventory.

EXHIBIT A: THE FIRST ANNUAL CHERRY BLOCK PARTY. 
It’s felt like an eternity since the citizens of Cherry have gotten to mingle on the streets in the center of town, but with the sun beaming down on their shoulders - and the exhilarated buzz of tourists, soaking in the charm of Cherry Proper - it feels like nothing has changed at all. 
You know, besides the fact that Lux Lewis is still dead, and the fact that party drugs are apparently running rampant across town. 
Still, there are booths set up through the street, lining the sidewalks end-to-end with local goods and cuisine. ASTRID VAN ALLEN and her son are offering TAROT READINGS, and selling ARTWORK for those who are looking for souvenirs. For those who want something to wear home,  JILLIAN KING is selling VINTAGE CLOTHES, as well as accessories, and other knickknacks that were salvaged from Cherie’s Closet. Last but not least? BLOSSOM RECORDS own, LEO WALSH, is pushing SUMMERTIME DEALS on vinyl, CD’s, and cassettes. 
When the citizens get hungry, they’ll meander toward ROCKY JACKSON who is is hawking STREET FOOD - hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue and the like. When they need to cool down RONNIE RUSSELL will serve them DRINKS from the Pit like lemonade, soda, beer, and cocktails, and SCOTT FREESE will sell them a CONE or a CHOCOLATE-COVERED FROZEN BANANAS!
The only real difference between the Block Party and the festivals of yore is the fact that there are citizens of the South Side - and The Southsiders - mingled throughout the crowd... And that there tables on opposite sides of the street set up for HARVARD HARGROVE II and HASIM ERDOGAN to chat with their constituents. 
Harvard, obviously, is the one who offered the first olive branch between the two sides of Cherry Township - even if it pained him to have to take the first step in seeing one of the BIG DOGS,  men he’d seen for so long as employees, as one of his equals - but the tension that lingered between the two men was still clear as day: It could be felt, even just standing too near to either of them. They’re both there to give their side of the story: to convince Cherry Township that they deserve the spot as it’s Mayor... 
Little do they know that this day would set off a timeline of events that would never leave Cherry the same. 
THE TIMELINE OF EVENTS THAT WOULD NEVER LEAVE CHERRY THE SAME:

PARKER PANTONE hates the fact that the Southsiders are moving into the Proper... He doesn’t believe they deserve to be there, and decides to start trouble with a few of them. Good thing EMIR ERDOGAN is there to diffuse the situation... right?
HARVEY HARGROVE wasn’t supposed to leave his father’s side throughout the day... but he couldn’t help himself but sneak off. He and DEBRA FOSTER aren’t exactly friends - and who knows if they ever will be since DEBRA spills the beans about HARVARD HARGROVE II, and his business to HARVEY. 
MILO MCCORMICK is using the opportunity of a crowded Main Street to deal a little - he only has days to pay up to the BIG DOGS... Too bad SPINNER REYES is also trying to deal in the same spot. Looks like the perfect time for SPINNER to interrogate MILO about his loyalty to the Southsiders... Especially since the BIG DOGS told SPINNER to do it.  
CAMERON CASTLE is new enough to Cherry Township that he shouldn’t already have beef with the Southsiders... so when FRANKIE FREESE spots him having a tense conversation with one of the gang members, she decides to have a little conversation with CAMERON herself. Maybe she can figure out what they were talking about - or at least be someone to talk to, if he needs it. 
WEST VIRGINIA has always been a little in-between when it comes to the South Side and the Proper - and so has OZZY OKALA - so it’s no surprise that they’re discussing the tragic death of WILLIAM ROCKS on this fine summer day... What is a surprise is the fact that OZZY spills information on the way THE SOUTHSIDERS do business. Especially the drug dealing. He’s just venting about his days past in the gang - he doesn’t mean any harm by offering the information to West - but you never know who’s listening. 
CASEY RUSSELL has regular clients, and he’s decided to meet up with one of them today, at the fair... little does he know that ZAHRA JACKSON has followed him down an alleyway. She doesn’t see much - only the tail end of the deal - but she knows that something is up, even if she doesn’t know exactly what it is. Can CASEY lie his way out? That’s to be determined. 
CRISTIANO VAN ALLEN is discussing his current deal with HARVARD HARGROVE II - and collecting a paycheck - when KITTY MADDOX walks up on the conversation. HARGROVE and CRIS play it off, but KITTY knows better than to think it was totally innocent... Affair? Conspiracy? Who knows. But Kitty wants to find out! 
SABRINA LOGAN has been making some... interesting choices lately, and AUDRINA ARCHER has been trying to turn over a new leaf. It’s no surprise that SABRINA is struggling, so AUDRINA tries to give her some unsolicited advice on how to deal with her sisters... but SABRINA is suspicious that someone from HARGROVE’S TEAM has spilled the secret of her newfound job. Even if AUDRINA doesn’t know anything. It might not stop SABRINA from raging. 
Who cares about South Side vs Proper drama when MIA MONTOYA and PILAR HAMILTON are going at each other in the town square? They’re both determined to fight their way to the top of Lambda Rho this fall... Too bad they can’t wait until then! Looks like the fight is happening this July, instead! They don’t have to punch each other, but we def expect both of them to get a few slaps in. Score. 
ZEV KING probably shouldn’t have left HARVARD HARGROVE II’s booth either... but just like NOAH RUSSELL helping out at The Pit’s stand, he can’t help himself but wander off. Both of the boys have ended up in one of the alleyway’s - one of the only quiet spots they were able to find - but it’s not so quiet when someone at the end of the alleyway gets their attention. The figure runs before they can get too close, but they’ve left a package behind for ZEV and NOAH - with their names written on it. Oh shit. 
ALICE ALDER was closer with the CANDY GIRL than anyone knew... and so was WINNIE WU, at the end of Grace Atkinson’s life. WINNIE sees this as an opportunity: she wants to learn more about the CANDY GIRL, so she probes ALICE for information... but their conversation is cut short when, on their walk, they come across an ENVELOPE with ALICE ALDER’S name on it. Looks like WINNIE gets to learn a little about blackmail after all. 
SAVANNAH LOGAN is new to town, but she was summoned because of  blackmail... it’s only right that her big reunion with her twin sister, LIBBY LOGAN, is tainted by the same sort of blackmail, right? The two of them are having it out when a brick flies through the window... on the brick is a note with a threat for Logan Eyes Only. God Damn It.  
JASPAR FLORENTINO has been working with KAMILLA YANG for a few weeks now, and under her orders, he has been assigned to take a boat out into the water, far enough into the ocean that Cherry was hardly a blip in his vision. He decides to take MACKENZIE WALSH with him, and though KAMILLA has given them hardly information on WHY they’re doing what they’re doing, they follow her instructions very carefully. One by one, they will throw a BOWLING BALL, a  BOTTLE, and ONE PERSONAL ITEM off of the side of the boat, and document exactly what happens. They’re determined to do that: the problem is that once it sinks, they forget that the object ever existed in the first place, and move onto the next. And once they’re out of objects? They forget why they’re even out there. 
It’s no secret that RORY COLLINS was in the hospital for a number of days following the Gang’s run-in with the CHERRYPLEX PHANTOM... But JAMIE CROMWELL knows that it’s only the CHERRY WITCHES that suspect her coma had something to do with the Weird Supernatural Stuff that they claim runs Cherry, CA. JAMIE has decided he wants to talk to RORY and find out for himself if it was something Weird and Wacky, or just a bump to the head... Though, he doesn’t know if RORY will tell him.

We then took a stroll around Langa, stopping at different spots like the old beer hall and makeshift meat stalls, where local women prepared and sold ‘braai’ (barbecue meat). Sheep’s head, or ‘Smiley’, is a popular braai meat.
After our walk around the township, we had the chance to taste some local food, including braai, at an art gallery in Langa. There were vegetarian options such as chakalaka, beetroot salad, creamed spinach, along with ginger beer, and steamed bread, which I opted for.

Montag, 22.01, bis Sonntag 28.01.2024
Für die kommenden vier Wochen sind wir in Windhoek West in einem Gästehaus untergebracht, welches bereits seit Jahren für internationale Studierende, die in den ortsansässigen Krankenhäuser eingesetzt sind, seine Türen öffnet.
Neben einem Haupthaus, in dem wir untergebracht sind, gibt es noch mehrere Nebenhäuser, sowie einen Pool und einen Barbecue-Carport. Oder "Braai", wie die Namibier das Grillen nennen. Wir haben eine Küche und Bad ganz für uns, die großräumigen Gemeinschaftsräume teilen wir uns wiederum mit neun norwegischen Nursing-Studentinnen. Sie sind genauso wir wir im Katutura Hospital und Central Hospital von Windhoek eingesetzt. In einem der Nebengebäuden wohnen Kenton, der Gästehausbesitzer und sein Cousin, Joseph, als Hausverwalter. Die beiden Namibier sind uns sofort sympathisch und immer sofort zur Stelle, wenn Unterstützung gefragt ist. Wir hätten uns keine bessere Unterbringung vorstellen können und sind mehr als zufrieden.

Nachdem wir am Montag die letzten bürokratischen Dinge für unseren Arbeitseinsatz abhaken können. So bringen wir noch unsere Reisepässe zu den Home Affairs, damit diese hier das Study Permit eintragen können (Dörtes Antrag ist nun glücklicherweise auch durchgegangen). Außerdem treffen wir uns mit den für uns zuständigen Mitarbeiterinnen der UNAM (University of Namibia), wo wir unseren Arbeitsvertrag unterzeichnen. Überraschenderweise dürfen wir sogar selbst mitbestimmen, wie lange wir jeweils in der beiden Krankenhäuser arbeiten möchten und auf welchen Stationen. Wir entscheiden uns für zwei Wochen Katutura Hospital, sowie zwei Wochen Central Hospital mit Fokus auf den Kreißsäalen, neben Schnuppern in den Wochenbettstationsalltag und Kreißsaal-Op. Mrs. Masule nennt uns als zu absolvierende Dienstzeiten nur kurze Schichten von 07.00 bis 13.00 Uhr. Die Wochenenden haben wir zudem grundsätzlich frei.
Als Mrs. Masule von der UNAM uns eröffnet, dass wir unsere eigene Arbeitskleidung mitbringen müssen, fühlen wir uns ziemlich unvorbereitet. Das hat uns vorher niemand gesagt. Zum Glück findet sich in Kentons Guesthose ein ganzer Schrank voller Kasacks und Arbeitshosen, die vorangegangene Studierende hier gelassen haben und die wir nutzen dürfen.
Der Dienstag gestaltet sich als Einführungstag im Krankenhaus, an dem uns die Praxiskoordinatorin für Azubis und Studentinnen im Krankenhaus herumführt und uns unsere Aufgaben und Pflichten näher bringt. Sechs der Norwegerinnen starten ebenfalls mit uns im Katutura Hospital. Tatsächlich sind wir von den facilities des Krankenhaus etwas positiv überrascht. Trotz dass es Armut ausstrahlt, haben wir vom Krankenhaus, angrenzend an das Windhoeker Township Katutura, fast noch Schlimmeres erwartet .
Am Mittwoch ist dann endlich unser erster Tag im Kreißsaal. Wir sind sehr aufgeregt als wir unseren Weg zur "Labour Ward", wie sie hier bezeichnet wird, zum Arbeitsstart um 07.00 Uhr beschreiten.
Wir sind überrascht von all den Menschen, die sich für die Übergabe versammeln. Mit uns und den drei Norwegerinnen zusammen sind etwa 25 Studentinnen für die Tagschicht gekommen. Zusätzlich etwa 20 examinierte Nurses. In Namibia gibt es keine spezialisierte Hebammenausbildung. Sondern die Krankenschwesterausbildung umfasst auch die Hebammentätigkeit in Teilen. So gibt es zum einen die sogenannten "Enrolled Nurses", welche ein zweijähriges Studium durchlaufen und Grundpflegetätigkeiten übernehmen, wie Vitalzeichen messen, Schwangerenaufnahme und Wehenbegleitung. Auf den meisten Stationen dürfen sie keine Medikamente verabreichen. Auf der anderen Seite "Registered Nurses/Midwifes". Die Registered  Nurses studieren für insgesamt vier Jahre und tragen anschließenden gleichzeitig den Titel der Midwife bzw. Hebamme. Sie sind diejenigen, die die Geburten leiten.
Allerdings scheint im Katutura Hospital die Grenze der beiden Kategorien fließend, hier unterscheidet sich der Tätigkeitsbereich der enrolled nurses und registered nurses kaum.
Genauso wie in Deutschland, werden in pathologischen Fällen Ärzte hinzugerufen. Läuft alles physiologisch ab, ist kein Arzt zur Geburt anwesend.
Da es keine einheitlichen Kasack- und Hosenfarben gibt, weder für die Nurses, noch für die Ärzte, fällt es uns am Anfang schwer den Überblick zu behalten. Einige hilfsbereite Nursing Students erklären uns geduldig die Merkmale. So lassen sie uns wissen, dass die Schulterpolster, viel aussagekräftiger als die Farben sind. In aufgenähten Streifen zeigen sie zudem die bereits absolvierten Studienjahre auf. Zudem tragen die examinierten, Registered Nurses auffallend rote Schulterpatches zu weißem Kasack. Buttons geben Auskünfte über zusätzliche Qualifikationen.
Die Labour Ward im Katutura Hospital hält ein Aufnahmezimmer bereit, neben vier Wehenzimmern à zwei Betten, drei "active labour rooms" mit bis zu zwei Betten für die Gebärenden in der Eröffnungsphase. Daneben ein high-care-room für Risikopatientinnen, mit beispielsweise Frühgeburtsbestrebungen oder schwangerschaftsinduzierten Bluthochdruck,  sowie vier Kreißsäale à einem Bett.

Die Schichtübergabe läuft hier ganz anders ab, als wir sie kennen. Übergeben wird direkt am Patientenbett. Abgesehen davon, dass der Patientendatenschutz hier nicht eingehalten werden kann, da in den Wehenzimmern die nebenliegenden Patienten alle Infos zur Nachbar*in mithören, empfinden wir es auf akustischer Ebene ungeschickt. Denn nur diejenigen Fachpersonen, die in den Raum passen, bekommen die wichtigen Infos mit. Was sich in der Regel auf drei bis fünf Personen beschränkt.
Des Weiteren, finden wir hier im Dienstbeginn die namibische Definition von Pünktlichkeit wieder, der wir bereits auf unserer Reise begegneten. So ist es ganz normal, dass zum eigentlichen Schichtbeginn um sieben Uhr erst ein Drittel des Personals anwesend ist und innerhalb der folgenden halben Stunde der Rest eintrudelt. Auch wenn dann zum Teil die Übergabe schon begonnen hat.
Nach der Übergabe werden wir vielen Studierenden Räumen und gleichzeitig den Registered Nurses zugeordnet. Durch die große Anzahl an Studierenden, nimmt dies ebenfalls einiges an Zeit in Anspruch.
In den folgenden Tagen lernen wir die Abläufe und Arbeitsweisen des Kreißsaalteams dann besser kennen. In der Schwangerenaufnahme nehmen wir die Namibier als Vorbild wahr, das Hebammenhandwerk in die Schwangerenaufnahmen zu integrieren. So wird bei jeder Schwangeren händisch nach der Position des Babys im Bauch getastet (für die Hebis und WeHen unter den Lesern: Leopold getastet), sowie der Symphysen-Fundus-Abstand gemessen.
Die Geburtenbegleitung läuft hier in Namibia, wie erwartet ganz anders ab, als wir sie gewohnt sind. Während wir einerseits von der unglaublichen Stärke, die die gebärenden Personen hier unter Schmerz und Wehen zeigen, unfassbar beeindruckt sind, müssen wir uns anderseits erst an den Umgangston der Nurses mit den Frauen gewöhnen. Aufgeklärt und erklärt wird wenig, genauso wie ein rauerer Ton unter Geburt angeschlagen, als wir es kennen. Auch wenn es eine Umstellung ist, sind wir unfassbar dankbar,  nun die Möglichkeit zu haben, mit einem Blick über den Tellerrand, in das namibische Bild von Geburt und dem Umgang damit eintauchen zu dürfen.
So unbedarft mit Materialien umgehen wie in Deutschland, kann man hier allerdings nicht. Wir merken schnell, wie privilegiert wir zu Hause auf der Arbeit mit unseren allzeit vollen Schränken und funktionierenden, sowie regelmäßig gewarteten medizinischen Geräte sind. Überfluss ist hier absolute Fehlanzeige. Weder sind genügend Handschuhe vorrätig, um für jeden Patienten und Untersuchungen frische anziehen zu können, noch ist es möglich jeder Frau nach Geburt eine trockene Unterlage und Binde anbieten zu können. Op-Lampen in den Kreißsäalen sind zwar montiert, aber nicht funktionstüchtig. So wird bei einem Zervixriss oder beim Katheterisieren dann eben kurzer Hand mit einer Handytaschenlampe geleuchtet.
Decken, Kissen und Trinken, werden von den Frauen selbst mitgebracht.
Manuelle Blutdruckmanschetten gibt es z.B.  nicht und die digitalen Monitore funktionieren nicht zuverlässig und sind außerdem einfach zu wenig für all die Patient*innen.
CTGs werden zur Überwachung der fetalen Herzöne verwendet, wurden jedoch so lange nicht mehr gewartet, dass ihnen selbst die einheimischen Nurses nicht immer ganz trauen.
Rollstühle zur Verlegung auf die Wochenbettstation sind zwar grundsätzlich vorhanden, jedoch lässt sich von den fünf, nur einer halbwegs fahren und das auch nur rückwärts. Bei den übrigen sind entweder die Räder kaputt, fehlen die Räder ganz oder der ganze Stuhl ist so instabil, dass man keine Frau dort angstfrei transportieren kann.
Neben der Patiensicherheit, leiden somit Hygienestandards sowohl zum Eigenschutz des Fachpersonals, als auch zum Schutz der Patient*innen, deutlich unter dem Materialmangel.
Wenn wir uns überlegen, worüber in Deutschland sowohl von Patient*innen, als auch durch das Krankenhauspersonal manchmal Beschwerden eingehen....
Als große Herausforderung für uns persönlich empfinden wir es, unseren Platz in der Teamstruktur zu finden. Wir fühlen uns ein wenig, als würden wir zwischen den Stühlen setzen. Denn einerseits haben wir nun im dritten Studienjahr in der Heimat bereits einiges an Fachwissen vermittelt bekommen und durften schon viele Erfahrungen in der Praxis sammeln, die wir gerne anwenden möchten. Andererseits, möchten wir unseren Arbeitseinsatz in Windhoek gerne nutzen, um von den Namibiern und ihrer Arbeitsweise zu lernen, indem wir durchs Zuschauen und Assistieren lernen. Das wir uns hier und da jedoch zurücknehmen und eher die Beobachterrolle einnehmen möchten, stößt vor allem bei den anderen Studierenden auf Unverständnis.
Und in Situationen, in denen wir Risiken sehen, die nicht als solche wahrgenommen werden, fällt es uns am schwersten unsere Rolle zu finden.
Hierzu muss man wissen, dass den Studierenden durch die Registered Nurses viel Zutrauen geschenkt wird. Was schön und positiv ist, aber in manchen Situationen, gerade bei Risikopatientinnen von uns auch als etwas fahrlässig wahrgenommen wird.
Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass wir die erste Arbeitswoche als herausfordernd empfinden und gleichzeitig als bereichernd und mit wertvollen Erfahrungen und Erkenntnissen gefüllt. Von den meisten des Teams werden wir zudem offen und herzlich aufgenommen.
Am Wochenende tauchen wir in die Geschichte verschiedener Gebäude in Windhoek Central bei einer guided Tour ein und genießen den Samstagabend bei einem Barbecue. So haben wir die Norwegerinnen, Joseph und Kenton, sowie Christina, eine deutsche Hebamme, die hier bereits seit acht Jahren lebt, zum Essen eingeladen. Wir genießen den Abend in großer Runde sehr.
Am Sonntag lassen wir die Woche mit einer schönen Wanderung im westlich von Windhoek Daan Viljoen Nationalpark ausklingen. Hier können wir aus nächster Nähe Giraffen, Affen, Strauße und eine große Eidechse bestaunen.
