31 Days of Horror! Day Six: Stage Fright
An Italian Slasher!
Stage Fright was released in 1987 and was directed by Michele Soavi, a protege of the great Dario Argento. It starred Barbara Cupisti, David Brandon as Alicia and Peter respectively.
It's about a group of stage actors and crew who are locked inside a soundstage during a rehearsal by their persistent director, while unbeknownst to all of them, a killer lurks on the grounds.
This movie was a solid horror film. I thought it was a good movie. My favorite thing about it was the kills. Every time I thought I had one that was my favorite, there was a better-executed one just a few moments later. I also thought the actors all did a good job.
My standout in this film is actually the actress who played Laurel, the mean girl character of this film. Actress Mary Sellers is a scream queen in every sense of the word, and you hear it so many times throughout the film.
The killer of this film gives a new meaning to the words immortal serial killer. Irving Wallace is someone who keeps coming back for more no matter how many times someone knocked him down.
Good film.

Deliria (Stage Fright, 1987)
"What's our bright-eyed ingénue reading now?"
"Stanislavski."
"Oh, saints preserve us!"
"If an actor prepares, it's fantastic."
"Let me know when you get to the part about earning enough money to keep body and soul together, that's information I can use."

A dazzling debut in a downward period for the Italian thriller. Soavi improves the chance of the genre directing a shocking slaughter game, a fierce fable inscribed in a perfect metatheatrical structure that seems to want to exacerbate sadism and voyeurism. He gradually builds an atmosphere loaded with tension and horror as only Argento/De Palma knew how to do in those days.

StageFright: Aquarius (1987)
Not to be confused with Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright, StageFright: Aquarius is a 1987 giallo film directed by Michele Soavi, who got his start assisting Dario Argento and shooting second unit work on Tenebrae, Phenomena, and Opera. His second film was the previously reviewed La chiesa in 1989, but this freshman feature has a lot of style, which spackles over the occasional slip-ups that are…
