NAIAS 2018: The North American International Auto Show Gets Underway
Even as North American car sales ease off a bit, there’s an optimistic buzz about the future of the auto industry at the press days here at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which kicked off its press preview days on Sunday, January 14th and will open to the public from January 20-28th.
From muscle and electric cars, to high-performance supercars and full-size trucks, #NAIAS has something for everyone to enjoy. The Public Show opens January 20-28 – get your tickets now: https://t.co/TPc7ZXLskl #NAIAS2018 http://pic.twitter.com/I4MV9FVm5P

Like every major North American and global auto show these days, as well as the CES show that unfolded last week in Las Vegas, the Detroit Auto Show demonstrates how auto brands are no longer just about traditional features such as horsepower, fuel economy and interior comfort but also about how they are tackling the nascent trends of electrification and autonomous vehicles.
“There are legitimate public concerns that must be addressed before (autonomous driving) technology can reach its full potential in our society,” says @USDOT secretary Elaine Chao.#NAIAS

The headliner kicking off the press preview wasn’t Mary Barra, GM’s CEO who wowed the CES crowd last year, or Ford CEO Jim Hackett, who gave a keynote address at this year’s CES, but Elaine Chao, U.S. Secretary of Transportation. The DOT head says new self-driving vehicle guidelines will be introduced this summer as the federal government revisits rules that pose legal barriers to autonomous vehicles.
